I... think Mathilde would just be happy that Eike isn't growing up as lonely as she did?

Like, she's just been doing everything in her power to make sure Eike has a way better time than she did in all respects, seeing her make friends wouldn't be some kind of 'reckoning'.
Eike should and i hope to have a far happier childhood then her.

Thats why i recomend we buy her a cat to make sure our Friend also watches over her.

Er, are you thinking of the Grand Theogonist who nuked Mannfred's army?

Because that was about 200 years before Magnus the Pious.
Err. Yes. That one.

Its Throne of Vines isn't it?
Pretty sure it was this:

But as a 'a Battle Altar is a large thing you ride on that is used to cast battle magic' sort of Structural-Purist Function-Neutral thing...
Yeah, the rest of the sentence was something along the lines of '...Throne of Vines Counts.', but since we were discussing whether it was Throne of Vines or something else, and I said that the Jades probably hadn't cracked instant enchantment of battle altars, I felt that I didn't need to specify, and Mathilde was probably just using a more expansive definition than strict.

Maybe this will be the impetus to developting some more offensive BM? We do have the Cloudkill option grandfathered in from the olden days of spell creation rules, and it's just begging to be done now that we have our staff.

Smoke constructs does that. For the "independent action" part we'd have to have wolf take the wheel, or an Apparition.
But apparitions have so much more potential to kill things than being distractions
Smoke Construct don't even look remotely like Mathilde, though. The idea is to have multiple realistic targets for an enemy targetting mathilde to 'hit at'.

Part of his job is representing the Light College publicly, a job he just did a spectacularly bad job at.

Yes, Alric's still above average for a Light Magister that Mathilde's worked with, but I'm beginning to suspect that Horstmann and his entourage are an outlier that should be discounted.
If we discount Horstmann as an outlier, wouldn't that make Alric look betterby comparison because the average is dragged down?

Honestly Horx might have made Alric Hyper-paranoid about letting his subordinates and the people beneath him get too much power, which in turn has led to him being stifling and a bit of a control freak.

It'd fit with the vibe given off by Mira and Horstmann, that they're individuals who are competent enough for roles of greater importance, but who Alric holds back. It'd make sense if he doesn't really trust anyone after his own protegee stuck him in crystal, so now he tries to prevent anyone being in a position where that could potentially happen again.
