I think the only way to reliably beat Dragomas is to stop him transforming in the first place.
I wonder if he's got some sort of mastery that makes that approach harder, like having a constant spell matrix in his human form to transform back into his dragon self, rather than the normal version where you have to actively cast to go dragon and have a matrix to turn back.

So I am not going to read like 30 pages of the thread before I vote because otherwise I would forget to vote. Honestly I will be happy with any option BoneyM has presented to us except for swamptown since that would cut us off from all the characters we have grown to love.

Aiding the Karaz Ankor is always an honor, but Prince Mandred won't be young forever. Mathilde could indirectly influence almost every facet of the Empire by the time he becomes Emperor.

IF it allows an audience, I would vote to go see it :)
Yeah. Since Dragomas has been the target to beat for 32 years, there must have developed something akin to a metagame with anyone from Magister to Apprentice and even the occasional interested layman making speculation of how to beat him a common watercooler discussion while ambitious Lord Magisters merely drop misleading hints on the strategies they spend half a decade or more cooking up and training for.
Yet to be determined, but probably something circumspect. Outside of Stirland there's a lot of different names for that sort of thing. Interior Minister, perhaps.
Something innocuous like Keeper of Keys (because s/he enters everywhere) or Minister of Hydration (inflow and outflow and making sure nothing is poisoned that shouldn't be poisoned) could also be neat.

That, at least, doesn't seem possible, for the same reason Mathilde can't go around with a spell in a matrix in her own body. He's probably got some nice related perks and almost definitely has a mastery in the spell, though.

24 years. If he wins this duel his term will be 32 years. Unless he dies before it's up.

I mean, off-hand I would think the "turn into a Cathayan dragon" part would be the Mastery.

That would certainly be my guess in a vacuum, but it's not guaranteed; he learned the spell in Cathay, so it might be that the Cathay-form is simply an alternate 'normal' version.

Hear me out about Swamptown:

It's a trash post, in terms of prestige etc., but I don't doubt that our girl Mathilde could turn that around.

Additionally:
- Autonomous role = more freedom of movement, lots of opportunity to choose our own tasks
- A whole hemisphere of new magical mysteries
- New enemy
- Think of all the concessions!
- Think of all the adventures!
- Think of all the loot!

Mathilde is a newly-minted Lady Magister - it is befitting of her new role that she forge her own path, have her own adventures, and pursue new avenues of magical inquiry. I think it has the potential to develop us as a leader, involve some cool treasure, put us up against a fascinating and formidable foe, and expose us to some fascinating magic. There's no real prestige in it ... yet. This seems like exactly the type of thing that a Lady Magister could really sink her teeth into.

Still behind, but: Mathilde isn't the only wizard the Karaz Ankor can call on. After this expedition, you can bet "hire a wizard" is now an option that many dwarven leaders, kings and otherwise, are going to now seriously consider. If Loremaster-at-Large wins, this is going to be Mathilde most of the time, sure. But remember that the dwarves aren't shy about hiring humans when appropriate; heck, there's an entire country full of human allies they've been cultivating for a while.
