That's... actually a good point. I'd assumed he had, since he went as a Journeyman, and the impression I got was that the time between his return and his challenge for Supreme P/Matriach was relatively short, but I don't think it's actually stated anywhere.Has that been stated? He went there, and he came back with the non-aggression pact carved into Jade. He has the spell. But has it ever been stated that he learned it in Cathay?
Boney has said many times that Dwarfs are not good at adapting to changing circumstances. Will Belegar hire another Wizard if Mathy is unavailable but he really needs one? Almost certainly. Will Barak Varr? They've done it before, so yes. Will Karak Azul? Maybe, since their introduction to manlings went so well. So might Vlag. But for other Holds, probably not. There's a reason why we need to keep the Loremaster position to be Karaz Ankor's troubleshooter - per Boney, it's so that we have a title that justifies letting us deal with their problem. And that's for us, we're the reliable Wizard in the mind of any Karaz Ankor Dwarf, and it's still not enough unless we're the Loremaster.Still behind, but: Mathilde isn't the only wizard the Karaz Ankor can call on. After this expedition, you can bet "hire a wizard" is now an option that many dwarven leaders, kings and otherwise, are going to now seriously consider. If Loremaster-at-Large wins, this is going to be Mathilde most of the time, sure. But remember that the dwarves aren't shy about hiring humans when appropriate; heck, there's an entire country full of human allies they've been cultivating for a while.
I'm pretty sure the Empire will hold together fine even if Mandred doesn't get the position. Him specifically being Emperor isn't critical to the whole thing.[] Bodyguard and Tutor to Prince Mandred
The Empress sold me on this. Making sure the next Emperor lives to hold the Empire together had my attention. The ability to travel around the empire fixing these long standing problems we've been hearing about all quest has my interest.
Agreed, but much of it might be too fascinating and too formidable. Investigating lizardmen artifacts could get us into trouble, like what Harkon got or worse. Slaan could mind-blast us from dozens of miles away from inside their pyramid if we meddle too much to their liking. Seems too much of a gamble, for now. For me Slaan and their secrets are something to be approached together with an elven expedition that has Teclis. Otherwise, I think it's "roll dice to see if Slaan decide to insta-kill you from afar".involve some cool treasure, put us up against a fascinating and formidable foe, and expose us to some fascinating magic

No, but having a decent, or atleast not horrible, emperor kinda can be.I'm pretty sure the Empire will hold together fine even if Mandred doesn't get the position. Him specifically being Emperor isn't critical to the whole thing.
That would explain why he had such a strong resistance to wearing clothing...Perhaps he is Cathayan dragon that is pretending to be the original Dragomas.
It's the difference between having an emperor and having a great emperor that I'm trying to point out. Karl Franz brought much needed unity and we have a chance to foster someone of similar importanceI'm pretty sure the Empire will hold together fine even if Mandred doesn't get the position. Him specifically being Emperor isn't critical to the whole thing.
