200 years later some hypothetical wood elf visitor might well point their finger at the resulting oak and go, "What the fuck is that?" Then you got War of Vengeance II: Electric Bugaloo.
And then they realize "Oh, Karak Eight Peaks is not right next to a forest." And they go home, because Asrai trying to fight in the mountains would be about as bad as the Dwarves trying to fight their way into a forest. That is, very bad.

You know, just in case it becomes relevant, I was wondering, how many things to you think have died here recently? How many corpses have just been chucked aside?

May or may not be related to any back up plans I make if we get attacked with overwhelming forces.

I'd be more than happy to have Mathilde to pull her extra-secret superweapon out of her hat and drown the mountain in the vengeful spirits of the dead... but we're currently on the job for helping the expedition, and we'll doom it to failure if we kick off a conflict of that size and nature. Divided Loyalties strikes again, I'm afraid.

It's rather interesting that the Chaos Dwarves allowed the sale of said golden arm. Mathilde can't recognize it, but I'm sure the chaos dwarves would know better.

The same logic applies to the arm as with the Acorn, since it's been pretty definitively identified by the thread as an Old One artefact at this point, tbh.

So yeah, I'm kinda of the opinion that we should just buy everything, if only for the reason of denying it from the more unscrupulous factions of the world. We can figure out what to do with them later.

So the Oak of ages acorn can act as a power reserve for a magic user. Not a little one but one that is huge for elves. Frankly the acorn is looking at a must buy. The Arm is a Lizardmen artifact that usually cast shem's burning gaze. I can take it or leave it.

I think we should buy those papers, I want that poor elven explorers research to lead to something good, rather than staying in the hands of the people who captured her.

We may only be able to save 1 or 2 Slaves and safely leave with them on our Shadow Steed, but it is better to save even 1 than to save none.

Far too high a chance that the meat is tainted or has gone bad.

800 gold coins?

Yes, as still has gold value and I love the mystery box.

1000 gold coins?

Absolutely! Our Jade Girl would love it and there is always the option of trading it to Ulthuan or the Wood Elves.

200 gold coins?

No risk of Magic Toads on a Rampage to get sketches and rubbings, plus useful and exotic if we write a Paper later.

I kind of think the Writer may be in the Slave Hall, she may want her notes back if we can free her....

If we buy the arm, we'll have either a Tomb King or a Lizardmen army show up at our doorstep.
Aren't the Lizardmen pretty militant about getting their gold plates/artifacts back as well? Like not to the Tomb King levels of "I will hunt you to the ends of the Earth" but still pretty persistent....
I thought the Lizardmen only went to war over the plaques? The artifact is an arm, not a plaque.

"Few artefacts forged by mortal races contain as much magical power as a single acorn from the Oak's branches. Many a Spellsinger that travels the lands beyond Athel Loren does so with such a treasure bound tight above her heart to serve as a protective charm, a lodestone to hearth and home and, at desperate need, a reserve of power."
Source: Oak of Ages

No one is going to start a war with us over owning the acorn, not when they send spellcasters out into the world wearing it as a good luck charm. At worst, we're going to have a spellsinger visit us, ask how we obtained it, and then politely ask us to return it when they discovered we didn't kill for it.

Also:
"a reserve of power"

That sounds pretty damn useful to me.

But it won't be Mathilde doing that! It'll be Gabriella von Ernachthafen who blows everything up and all Mathilde has to do is to duck out without anyone following her.

Amazing update. This place is so uncanny that I don't know how to react to it though. Like my first thought is that the papers must be safe, and the arm is a giant red flag made of smaller red flags, but for all I know the arm could be the safest one while the papers are full of etchings that drive you crazy if you read them.

As for the slave market, that's fucking grim, but forget dreams of rescuing a VIP Elf prince or whatever, I think freeing anyone at all would be worth it. I know there's nothing in there that we want to see, but following Ranald isn't just about getting magic coins and puppies, and it seems to me that walking away from their suffering would be like blasphemy for her.
