Rare Books? Accessing college library via mail order?
we just installed a room just for them to look at our books.

I don't think holding books that we will given them a look at anyways is going to move them in any way.

Cython is a focus of nature character, even more then Kragg.

they are going to do what they want, when they want. and nothing short of dangling something juicy is going to get them to move, let alone comply.

Members of the Engineers Guild, over a thousand, including siege weapon operators, gyrocopter pilots, ground crews, and manufacturers of ammunition and spare parts. Actual full-blown capital-letters Master Engineers, maybe twenty. Clan Stonebeard was K8P's original Engineers Guild but they were absorbed into Zhufbar generations ago and it's a tricky and uncomfortable process to refound a Clan that had 'given up'.
Huh. I didn't know that the Guild was this vast in scope. Though it does make sense, what with many of those jobs being "new". But even taking that into account, those numbers seem promising. More than I expected tbh.

How much movement is there usually in internal Guild jobs? Do grounds crew often graduate to other stuff? Does a wounded pilot sometimes become an artillery crewman? Must every apprentice learn the basics for all these jobs and every master actually be able to do them all at least in theory?

Also, how does being a professional ammo or spare part maker jive with Dwarven pride?
Being Loremaster is rather insular by nature, if she'd become Steward or the internal Martial she'd have a lot more to do with the Karak itself.
Does a typical Karak Loremaster only do either things that the King demands or things that they fancy doing on their own? Is there no way for a citizen in good standing or at least a Clan head or Guildmaster to petition a Loremaster without going through the King first? Because else that could be a hook for a random social or two.
Yes, he'd have at least one official or unofficial ambassador for every major polity or organization he wants to keep in touch with.
Did Anton also have something like that back in the day or is Kazrik just better organized?
If there is, they'd be holy relics of their respective Cult.
Dwarves don't copy books? I mean I assume that if Valaya had written some kind of almanac it would have been akin to a bestseller back in her days. Though I guess if only very few copies survived and then got rediscovered some time after the Golden Age then the Valayan Cult might keep them secret, in typically infuriating Dwarven fashion.
Sure, it might cause tension between K8P Engineers and other Engineers, but that skateboard saile
What's his largest "crime against tradition" in K8P itself? Did he do anything worse than the newfangled grapeshot guns?
Someone being unable to figure something out when it's dismantled on their workbench does not fall under fog of war.
If this were it's own comment it definitely would get the funny rating.
Now I am curious what kind of stuff the Grey College equivalent of Adela would be working on.

It's an Emperor Dragon. There's a very real chance that Belegar is only the second-richest being in the Karak. If it wanted those things, it could buy them.

Hmmmm... Its a hysh dragon, so maybe a more philosophical argument would convince them to do it of their own free will.

If we could convince them that shared knowledge makes new discoveries faster, and that quantity of researches beats quantity because a thousand buffoons may stumble upon something a lone genius would never consider, maybe Cython can share stuff so that humans may hopefully stumble into some new knowledge Cython can now access too.

Still haven't seen any rreason to think that this won't work. Still haven't seen any reason to think it would be more than a glacially slow method of weaving spells similar to enchanting, if it does. What is the goal here? Taking three days to cast a simple magic from another wind seems useless besides as a flex.

Necromancy isn't just super slow dhar magic, its something entirely different, so is the lore of stealth.

it might be what your saying, it might also be a lot more than that.

And we won't know until we do some real deal research into it.

how do dragons move their hoards?

do they have a loot stomach?

Multiple trips, presumably. I wouldn't want to be the one that found out what sort of magical booby-traps it leaves when it's busy ferrying part of its hoard.

Some will spend their entire lives in a role that fits them, others will take it on as a stepping-stone to to a more difficult one, or becoming a full Engineer.

Also, how does being a professional ammo or spare part maker jive with Dwarven pride?

Each shell or bullet or spare part is one day going to be the difference between Dwarves living and Dwarves dying.

Petition to what end? Mathilde is a human and a Wizard, she's almost completely alien to Dwarven society.

Anton handled everything personally.

Guilds and Cults tightly control who has access to their secrets. Books from an Ancestor would absolutely fall under the jurisdiction of the respective Ancestor Cult.

You could increase the time he spent testing the grapecannon by two orders of magnitude and most Engineers would still consider it dangerously hasty. He'll probably commit even worse sins once the Okral is gone and there's no fires that need his immediate attention.

A graduate from the University of Altdorf might be able to argue that, but the Colleges haven't even finished their second century yet. Not really a strong argument for a long-term investment.

Also it's in it for the joy of discovery, not knowledge for its own sake. It'd be like offering solutions to a crossword enthusiast.

I think it's just typical of the Learning adviser in general. (see, Herr Schultz as example A)

every other adviser works together on issues of the realm that cross over.

The learning Adviser mostly works on stuff the others can't.

its why If we do move on or get the chance to do something else I would not pick Learning adviser again. even if its what we are 'best at' (we are pretty good at every job at this point.)

And i was just starting to think they were alright.

but that's just bad civilisation right there.

I mean, its also an Emperor Dragon. The "rare books" that he'd be most likely to ask the Colleges to borrow are Volan's notes. And I'm reasonably sure that he can't in fact, buy those. Or at least, he can't buy them with money.

Mind you, him asking would be hilarious:
Dragon: I heard you used to have a surprisingly decent Hysh user hanging around a few centuries back. Mind if I borrow his notes for a tic? I might actually learn something.
Supreme Patriarch Dragomass: ...You mean Volans?
Dragon: Yeah, that's the guy.

You accidentally quoted Rafin instead of me on my question  (prolly because you broke Radin's questions in chunks and accidentally erased my name when answering the last question? idk)(edit: seems it was fixed, I know, I know, I saw nothing)

Also, would it even be a big investment? He is not giving anything up except maybe time, and that is the thing he has the most of by magnitudes.

I was going to say that it might want access to restricted libraries like those maintained by the Colleges, but I guess if it wanted to get into the fun stuff it wouldn't have that much trouble negotiating access.

On the other hand...

I cannot possibly believe that the Colleges would be okay conducting that negotiation by mail, so now I have the image of Cython flying into Altdorf to land on Dragomas' front door to ask this. Just... SUDDENLY EMPEROR HYSH DRAGON, but instead of demanding princesses or a cartload of cows or a pile of gold to sleep it on, it says that it was referred by Magister Weber and it wants B O O K.

Ice Dragons like Cython could also use space-warping to transport their hoard. The logical method would be opening a wormhole or something but I choose to believe they use it to increase the volume of their mouth so they can eat their hoard, travel to their new lair like some scaly pelican, and then spend ten straight minutes vomiting out gold. It's more amusing.

The Dragon is a Hysh one. I reckon we could make it come over to our side if probed along the lines of. "Wouldn't it be nicer if the world population was a bit smarter and more educated about things?"

Valayas romance novel collection is not meant for mortal eyes.

Dragons are not fed. They hunt.

Sounds like he would have a lot of fun helping us with Mystic Theurgy though.

I don't know. "I found weird stuff. Please look at it", or "Two Lorekeepers disagree on what to do and, silly as it is in your case, it's the Loremaster's job to decide". Or "I'm a radical hip Dawi and really think that we should kickflip this thing", or "A Dwarf from another Hold has come here to ask about something strange that a Zhuforki they hired did", or "a curious Lorekeeper/Historian, impressed enough by our actions to that maybe a skateboard can be interesting after all wants you to hold a Dawi-oriented lecture about something". I'm really just spitballing here. If it doesn't make sense it doesn't make sense.
I guess another option would be one of the other Councillors wanting something from us. Or just some socializing that happens to take place in Karag Lhune.

Maybe he has a research project that includes some boring and tedious part that can be done by many hands and leads to more fun things down the line? But I guess in that case he'd be able to buy that too.
Maybe he'd like to study how his wind interacts with humans and wants an introduction to a Light LM? I don't know. Is it safe for Emperor Dragons to just fly to Altdorf without petitioning first? Would they ever think of something like sending a letter first?

I was wondering, lately... what happens if the Dawi grudge someone wrongfully, and then that comes to light? Considering their intrigue, it IS possile for someone to trick them. I imagine every Dawi involved goes Slayer and that the person that tricked them gets Grudged, but does the original Grudge get erased, or is it taboo to erase a Grudge without redress even if it is falsely written? And if it isn't, what do the Dawi do to apologise to the person they Grudged and redress damages they may have inflicted in pursuit of that Grudge? What if their ancestors wrote that Grudge, but the historical evidence PROVE it was wrong?

If any interesting subplots along those lines occur to me I'll work them in.

His current interest is Gods, and you doubt there's much cooperation on that front to be found. And if he showed up at the Gates of Altdorf and didn't seem like it was actively attacking, someone would be sent to go get Dragomas to come sort it out, and the University of Altdorf could supply translators.

In theory, it shouldn't be possible. The Grudge process involves someone going to the Grudgee and laying out what the problem is, and if they said 'wait I didn't do that' then there'd be a lot of investigation to figure out what's going on. If for whatever reason an innocent Grudgee doesn't communicate that when they have the opportunity, then that's Playing Silly Buggers and they deserve everything they get. If the Grudgee is a being that doesn't get the courtesy of a warning, like a greenskin or a Skaven or whatever, then they're still enemies of the Karaz Ankor so it's not that big a deal. If someone plays a really long con where they manage to trick the entire process into getting a Grudge levelled and executed against an innocent party, then the responsibility for that is entirely on whoever that puppet master was and they get Grudged twice, once for the original Grudge and once for the trick, and while reparations would be made to the innocent Grudgee, the culpability would be considered that of the trickster, not the Dwarves involved.

I agree that, there really should be more jobs like this turning up now that we are off a war footing. plus any argument between nerd dwarfs that escalate would be our job as well.

even having it as a series of cometic blooper moments in one update to show the boring, rediculous, paperwork heavy work that is now part of the job would work.

I think the problem with your argument is the boring and tedious part, they are trying to whittle away time, something taking awhile is just a bonus to them.

I wonder if he'd be interested in discussing Mathilde's experiences with Ranald. He might have an interesting perspective.

Given what he said about his shape, I also wonder if he couldn't take a human shape for a while if he wanted to do stuff like visit Altdorf and quietly peruse the libraries.

We likely would get that normally, but right now all the councils is getting that and us getting involved would not help.
