It occurs to me that Hashut definitely does something to ward the Dawi-Zarr from magic, because non-sorcerers don't turn to stone and I can't imagine that they are still using the rune and rituals of Valaya.

@BoneyM How does membership to Clan Undumgi work, de jure and de facto? Or in other words, how much freedom does Francesco Cavallero have when it comes to Dwarf-recognized adoption and how does he exercise it in relation to human immigrants?

At this point, Mathilde has become a historical figure, and then went right past that into legendary.

And if this plan works out, I do think it's going to be another chapter in the history of Vala-Azril-Ungol, the dwarfhold that just won't stop building magical superweapons. We'll need another version of the civilation meme. And maybe the engineers and runesmiths will be motivated to built their own superweapon, instead of leaving it to the umgi.
EDIT: This is some of the most fun I've had in a thread in a looong while, but I should've been in bed somewhere between 1,5 and 3,5 hours ago, so I'll have to stop here. Please remember to vote for dragons, don't make me sad when I wake up.
Nuclear Belegar !
What ever you do in Civilisation, never take your fucking eye off nuclear Belegar !

Am I the only one now imagining Mathilde pulling an Anakin Skywalker from dragonback? We have the glowy sword that cuts through anything and appears out of nowhere, we have the "these aren't the droids you're looking for", we have the penchant for walking into fortified installations and wreaking havoc all by ourselves... All we're missing is the speeder to jump out of and the "Excuse me for a moment."
'I'll try spinning, that's a pretty good trick"
"I killed them all, not only the undead men, but the undead women and the undead children too"
We heard about the Tragedy of Van Hal the wise
Oh, we actually can't be skywalker: The council recognized us as a master !
This is actually, no lie, all the answer anyone needs.

Elves are just that fucking arrogant.

Until a dragon makes them into lunch.
The dragon riders of Caledor would probably love that: half of the time riding a dragon, half of the time as a dragon.

A snag in being Skywalker came about sooner because we never said we hate sand.

So the general thrust goes like:
1) Update lands
2) Basic clarification obtained, key priorities identified and clarified.
3) Priorities and facts converge towards a One True Plan.
4) One True Plan takes initial voting lead, others fall behind.
5) One True Plan fails to sell the idea to everyone, but there is consensus on what sort of broad thrust is needed to obtain any votes.
6) Deviations fork off the One True Plan
7) Voters no longer have to make the heavy decision of picking every point and can now focus on which particular line items they most agree/disagree with. Boney goes to sleep/rest, confident that the thread won't catch fire.
8) Reaches the critical period, thread starts getting weird, irrational fears(and their peddling), memes, and counting the number of burgers you're going to get before you even laid any eggs happen. Thread catches fire.
9) Equilibrium reached as Boney returns to bring balance to the Force, lock the vote and start leaking ominous things.
veekie's taxonomy of thread cycle continues to hold true. We're solidly in phase 8.

For reasons of not loading all the humans down with all the expectations and responsibilities that they'd get if they were legally part of a Dwarven Clan, Francesco decided against making the Undumgi an official Clan. So it's mostly like a mercenary company with high hiring standards, a very odd culture, and a fixed employer.

Oh, I thought he just opted to not be the official Thane of Karag Nar for that reason.
Key Partners:
King Byrnnoth Grundadrakk: Partnered with for the Skull River-Aver Reach canal project.
Elector Count Roswita Van Hal: Trusts the EIC to not take too much advantage of whatever economic control she sells to the EIC.
Grand Masterr Ruprecht Wulfhart of Ulrikadrin: Happy to maintain a trade link to the Empire.
Francesco Caravello of Clan Undumgi: Completely aligned with the EIC.
I don't know if there are any other references, but this one was the one that sparked the thought and question in my mind.

Edit: I also for some reason thought that the Undumgi became a capital C Clan before Francesco's election.

Probably a terrible idea but maybe mind hole scaled up to make it forget the entire dwarven hold. Possibly combined with a similarly scaled up Take No Heed. Just make the dragon stop caring and leave

Okay, so we've got a step 1. I feel good about this plan so far. What do you think step 2 should be?

Step two would be not getting eaten by daemons while (step three) construct a different magic siphon that leaves you enough magic for mega-mindhole without the armies of Daemons and the literal end of the world. Maybe we can slap Grimnir on the back and tell him to work a little harder while we do some renovations. Shouldn't be that long really. :V

In context of building a giant tower to make people forget about what happens inside it:

They'd forget the tower itself but they won't forget what happened to them in there.

Even if you tried, it would only sort of work. (Also, you'd have to find a way to soak a mountain-sized Waystone with Ulgu).

Does this mean that Francesco's position of Viceroy and his technically completely separate from his position as leader (or quartermaster?) of the Undumgi? That at least on paper he's some human that King Belegar chose to administrate Karag Nar (and all the umgi within) for him that also happens to be the head of the prestigious "Undumgi" roadwarden and military guild in service of Karak Eight Peaks?

Our current plan revolves around our fake dragon wrestling the real dragon so that the rest of the army can... fire into melee.

Purple Sun is basically designed to kill ridiculously tough monsters like dragons and doesn't need help from the rest of the army to do it, works underground, in the air, and on land and it comes with no particular complications due to WHF humans hating the idea of turning into a dragon. A weapon that allows the dwarf king to sacrifice a human vassal for power doesn't seem like the best way to improve relations.

[X] Plan: Purple Reign
-[X] MAX: Receive dictation.
-[X] JOHANN: Write a paper: Ratling Gun mechanism and countermeasures
-[X] DUCK: Spend time with Hubert to try to ensure a good relationship between him and magic, and between him and his identity as a Wizard.
-[X] EIC: Lend the services of the Hochlander, and the EIC's intelligence and contacts, to Roswita to help track down the Talabeclanders buying peat from the vampires.
-[X] Commission an altar based on Purple Sun of Xereus
--[X] Emphasis placed on being able maneuver the Sun quickly to catch nimble opponents
--[X] Optimized to reduce destructive consequences in case of miscast.
--[X] Can only be activated with one of three keystones.
--[X] COIN: The Gambler
-[X] Travel to the Grey College and attend lessons there: Staff Turning
-[X] Attempt to interest a prominent and knowledgeable Runesmiths in the interaction between Runes and Vitae. (will start at the top and work your way down)
-[X] Dictate papers:
--[X] Queekish-Reikspiel Dictionary, including spoken Low Queekish
--[X] Insight on Skaven tactics and strategy
-[X] PENTHOUSE: Have a tower built atop Karag Nar
-[X] SERENITY: Write a paper: Brief observations on Eshin Sorcery

More from my reread.

First, since the romance vote has now concluded, let's see what that might mean. Here's a few quotes from shortly after the last one.
"Our province," he corrects. You wildly misinterpret what he could mean for a moment. "Seven people, responsible for all of Stirland."

Right. That's what he meant.
More than once you spot Van Hal watching you train, which only spurs your efforts.
Now there was a line of thought you definitely weren't going to make public. "Maybe," is all you answer.
"Of course," you say automatically. "I mean, if my duties allowed for it."
I said in one of the prior posts Mathilde doesn't do adorable often, but she is cute with her crush. It's fairly rare though, that's all the mentions across two or three updates. The upcoming stuff will probably be more... active, I guess, since these quotes are from a vote that basically went "No romance, but van Hal sure is cute" while the recent vote went "I can't decide between these two, and then there's all the other fine and interesting fellows". Including Oswald, who made the cut despite what my brain keeps saying. I guess having to measure up to the dragon as his closest competitor just means he gets overshadowed.
It will also be interesting how her perspective shifts now that she is the more 'dominant' person in the relationship (due to social position with most of them or her sorta mentorship with Roswita). I also like that there's a good variety of personalities, backgrounds and needs in the dating pool.

Wilhelmina sucks in a breath. "It would be hideously expensive, but if it worked... it would give them access to trade with the southern Empire and beyond without having to go through Talabecland." You glance sideways at Schultz, who is staring wide-eyed down at the map. "It would be well worth the cost."
The Talabecland subplot continues, as Schultz realises there's some serious trouble coming up. And, didn't Talabecland get into a shitfit over this later, where they pissed of Karak Kadrin? Man, I love that this entire plotline brewing in the background has been going on so long.
Makes me wonder: Is part of the reason Talabecland is relucant to shut down the peat trade because of the trade (to be) lost to Ostermark? And potentially some resentment that Stirland helped them with that? In which case, with the EIC trade impact and Roswita setting the templars on them, she might get dragged into Empirial politics before too long.

Speaking of Roswita, here's a funny one:
You move down the mental list of things you meant to bring up. "If you want, I could write to the Colleges requesting that wizards join to the campaign. They won't come cheap, but a true battle wizard could come in very useful in Sylvania."

"I had considered it. Not for the initial stages of the campaign - the Purge is going to be long, slow, and methodical, which in my experience is poorly suited to most battle wizards. When it's time to march on the castle itself, then..."
Abelheim shares some of her opinions on using wizards for a broad purge. How does it go again?
Roswita: Doesn't want wizards
Emperor: Gets wizards anyway
Roswita and Wizards: Having a party

And finally, there's this bit
He muses on that for a while, looking at you oddly. "Sometimes I forget how young you are." You open your mouth to reply, but no reply presents itself. He continues on. "Have you fully grasped the fact that you are the second most powerful person in Stirland?" You blink rapidly as you try to take in this sudden change in direction. "Gustav's new to the role. Kasmir was damn near fired. Anton is..." he hesitates, then moves on. "Schultz serves a very specific niche. And Wilhelmina... is a very close third, actually. She's blossomed. But none of them have the combination of abilities, resources, trust and wide-open mandate that you do. And by Sigmar you do the job damn well. But your problem is that you don't believe in yourself to the degree that this job requires you to.

"You have access to all the information I do, and you have the luxury of spending the majority of your time and focus on intrigue, where I am pulled a dozen different ways. There is only one reason for you to ask me that question, rather than reaching a conclusion for yourself: because you lack confidence.

"I wish I had words to instil that confidence in you, but all I can do is tell you that if you allow self-doubt to erode your resolve, you will fail in the duty to Stirland we share. And while I would not hesitate to stand alone and die against all the evils of Sylvania, I would rather have you by my side and win.

"So stop thinking like a journeywoman, and start thinking like the Knight I know you are."
One of the great character moments in the story. It's understated, but I think it seriously impacted her, and it feels part of an evolution in her character. Pulling that off in a quest is no mean feat.
Or maybe it worked so well because it's a quest, because this was clearly aimed at the players as well (and it still gets referenced sometimes), and Mathilde's change in attitude is in part because the players had a character development moment.

Hmm, there's a good chance that the full impact of this is lost to time, because someone coming afterwards won't be a player, and it really doesn't apply to them. Then again, there's the awareness that it could, and people are good with putting themselfs in others shoes.

In a way, it might actually apply easier for a newcomer. When you read just the updates, it can feel like the will of the thread is this monolithic, unanimous thing, where a message of "be more confident in yourself, thread" fully applies to everyone. In reality, the thread is of course roughly 70% arguing, 30% jokes and memes, 20% thoughtful analysis and about 50% madness (it adds up to more than 100% because the madness (or jokes or memes) can be thoughtful, and it's certainly all argued about), so there's always a good chunk who disagree with any given action and attitude.

Purple Sun would work very poorly against a fast opponent, which Sparklebutt with Speed of Light is, but I agree that this is a good general solution to the problem of "large monstrous opponent."

I do however wish to point out, again, that the notion of them hating turning into a dragon was in the specific context of someone wondering about casting the spell and then dispelling the reversion trigger to make an army of dragons, i.e. permanently becoming a dragon. There is not support for the notion that a temporary transformation faces the same revulsion.
There's quibbles to be made with the 'actual' part, but yes, they could be permanently dragon-y. Anyone who's not an Amber Wizard who uses Amber transformations is rolling the dice to some degree.

Most citizens of the Empire would look at transformation into a dragon to be equivalent to dying.

They start as their same self inside a dragon-shaped body. Long-term mental effects are largely untested.

There are similar rituals that use human sacrifice to summon/create a manifestation of a specific wind, known as Incarnate Elementals. This strikes me as the most fitting Amber equivalent.
Boney's whole post is addressing people's reactions to the possibility of permanent transformations, not the normal use of the spell.

It's not sacrifice any more than fighting a war is sacrifice, it's a risk.

Purple sun has the issues of every other battle magic, namely that is you set a bound spell against a competent caster the caster is likely to win (barring shenanigans like the eye). Additionally the dragon plan synergies with runes and more importantly can be used against multiple lesser fliers effectively. By contrast a vortex spell is a giant uncontrolled ball of death that could hit anything once you cast it. I'm assuming killing your own formations because the spell randomly spilled into them is not what Belegar wants.

Purple Sun isn't going to hit a fast, flying target that sees it coming. The Dragon transformation can be initiated from inside a Karak since they have big enough rooms and tunnels to fit them, but a spell that needs to be aimed at the dragon would require pulling the altar out where it can be seen. The need to aim also means Purple Sun would do poorly if the Dragon decides to go into the tunnels. Our own Dragon can be deployed in the safety of a Karak and then quickly shifted around to respond to enemy maneuvers.

The Dragon transformation also doesn't fizzle when dispelled after it is cast, and doesn't kill everyone in the vicinity if dispelled while being cast.

A big issue with this is that the sun does not move very quickly. The dragon, however, does (potentially at the speed of light), and also flies. If it isn't tied down somehow (say, by wrestling another dragon), then there's a good chance it'll just do nothing.

It's also indiscriminate, so once the dragon has reached our lines, we either have to kill a lot of our dudes with magic, or just take it.

Also, a comment in general: This specific dragon can heal himself, so attrition fighting is not in our favor, because there's very little better at raiding than a healing, spellcasting dragon.

I will point out, if there's a dragon in the lines, a second dragon throwing down with it isn't going to be at all less collateral damage than Purple Sun, if only by the virtue that the dragon can't toss the Sun around.
