Also can someone tell me what the people asking a dwarven grandmaster to have a go at the repeater are expecting to get ? Because I fell the most likely result right is some kind of unique masterpiece.

We get someone to analyse it, the exact ways it can be improved (durability, efficiency, ease of manufacture, etc) and to apply that knowledge for future Stirland Repeaters.

They have lived their whole lives alone, hunting Skave and Goblins and Orks for centuries in the dark. They can handle themselves. The issue is that "fattening them up and hiring some quality mercs with the proceeds." means making them lose that edge. In a setting like WHF. By paying for their meals with the blood of men and dwarves.

This never ends well.

As for goblin quest protagonist? Then bloody well teach them. The only real protection against the Dark they have, is giving them good examples. Sit on your ass and weave webs? Indolence over having a natural resource that's valuable while others die for them? That's how you turn the We into Oil Barons. Do you want the We to act like Oil Barons in a world with Slanesh?
Exactly. Let my babies run free to be the beautiful predatory arachnids that they are! Treat them right.

[X] [WE] Hunt the Mountains
The sheer cliffs, gloomy valleys and dark caves of the mountains are no obstacle to the We, and there's enough wildlife in the surrounding mountains to keep the We fed. Though it means they wouldn't be feeding on enemies of the Karak, it could provide an early warning of any new neighbours moving into the area.

I've been convinced to support this. It's the option that preserves the most of the We's culture, which is important to me, and it means that they're not totally dependant on the Karak, which encourages fair dealing with them in the future.

Beyond that, it means that they're actively providing a useful service by being scouts, which the dwarves will appreciate. It's a very "play fair" option, and so far playing fair with the We has paid off.

[X] [BOON] I know just what to spend it on...

I'm a fan of the Great Library idea, and that's not really a use of the boon that benefits from waiting. If we start sooner, it'll be finished sooner, and in fact if we do it during the next few turns we'll be able to offload a lot of the excavation process to the KaK labourers.

Filling the library out with books will take a while, of course, but there's no reason to think that even in the current financial state Belegar can't afford 2000 gold a year or so as a library budget.

[X] [ROOM] Vault
To keep safe your wealth, your secrets, and your miscellaneous esoterica.
[X] [ROOM] Shrine to Ranald
The room where you mugged Mork with Him is all well and good, but something convenient and private might be nice.
[X] [ROOM] Guest Room
For when you have visitors; can fit three comfortably, or up to six if enough of them are on good terms with each other.

These are the three choices I feel most compelled by - none of the others particularly strike me.

A private vault is of course very useful to us and our growing collection of secrets, a shrine to Ranald is all but mandatory after how he pulled through for us last turn, and a guest room is very practical.

I wouldn't mind the landing pad, but some part of me would always complain that we could have had a better landing pad if we waited for a balcony option instead.

I'll be sticking with an existing library plan to avoid vote splitting, and I've never been one to pinch pennies on books.

[x] [COLLEGE] 5 favors for a full translation of the Cathayan books

Mystery box! It could even be a boat! More seriously, we have to spend at least 2 Favors to check out what this is in broad strokes, and if it's valuable we'd end up having to spend another 5 favors for a full translation anyway.

Better to just pay the full cost up-front to get it done and over with.

[X] [DWARF] Have a Grandmaster Engineer have a go at the Stirland Repeater - 8 favors

We're swimming in Dwarf Favor, so if we can improve the overall firepower of the Empire with that even a little, it's well worth it.

So combined, that's:

Possibly with traded protein supplements if the hunting is lean - the advantage of civilization is the diminishing of risks!

Keeping our treasures and our puppy secure is of critical importance, and having a person shrine is just good piety. Guest room for if we want to receive visitors, which as the Wizard of Karak Eight Peaks we absolutely do.

Do keep in mind how dwarfs count Favor: Ranger-y stuff they hardly count at all, even if you headcap Bosses, while at the same time killing a dozen orcs in the same room counts for a lot even though it didn't make any overall difference.

Out of Sight is Out of Mind, which is the main boon for Scavenge: it puts the We constantly in positive-reinforcing contact with the Karak's armed forces, which is one of the well known ways for building trust rapidly.
At the same time its why the hunts in remote areas are poor for improving relations, sure, the We are eating the local gribblies, but then so are the local gribblies, people don't go there!

Because, remember to factor in the relationships:
-We side perspective
--Mathilde - Trustworthy, Magical, Knowing. Weird
--Halfling Priestess - Patient, Educational, Strange Ideas
--Dwarfs - Distant, Stone Nests
--Journeymanlings - Mathilde's hatchlings?

-Karak side perspective
--Ruling Council - Massive windfall, and an innocent species to be raised up.
--Dwarf Rangers - Giant spiders on your side isn't bad as far as new things go, they're pretty good at hunting Skaven down.
--Average Dwarf - Never seen or dealt with them, hopes not to do so.
--Average Undumgi - Holy shit thats a big spider.
--Average Halfling - Well the priestess talks to them, and vouches for them, thats good?

We want to fix the Average Person. A tour of duty fighting orc mooks is effectively the same as the time Mathilde went shooting Skaven with Kazador, its a social ,bonding activity to kill things together. ESPECIALLY when those things are low threat so you can be chatty about a common foe. Dwarves talk a surprisingly large amount when killing things which pose little threat.

It's true that I would like the We to become less foreign to the Karak, and what you said about constant positive contact is entirely correct. On the flip side, though, there is also value in preserving their "culture" as hunters and status as a contributor to the Karak's well-being, rather than a client species we feed in exchange for silk, and it's not clear to me based on the description:
Though it's become less of an attempted invasion and more of a source of entertainment to the greenskins forcing their less-favoured underlings to throw themselves against the Dwarven defences, the Underway passage from Black Crag to Karak Eight Peaks is still a constant flow of greenskins. Though they're unlikely to make any real contribution as the battle is one of logistics rather than martial ability for the Dwarves, it will keep them reliably and safely fed, and they will be crediting most of those meals to the Dwarves.
that Scavenge will promote the notion that the We are useful military allies rather than clean-up duty after the dwarves do all the work.

The problem with being an invisible contributor is that the people who know and are impressed are not the people you need to impress. The Council is impressed already. So are the Rangers, over the years of watching them pick off Skaven.

All the contribution is happening at a level where your target audience can ignore that its happening.

And for useful military allies vs clean up duty?
Look at the Battle of Karagril.

The Journeymanlings didn't do much to affect the course of the battle, and the mercenaries didn't do anything at all, because Kazador was stealing all the kills.
The result? The dwarves consider them useful military allies, and they won favorable attentions, because little as they contributed(the mercenaries contributed zero!), they fought together against a common foe where they both can see.

The people looking at big picture "what are we getting" stuff, are already as impressed as they can be. They're Mathilde and Belegar.
The true challenge is getting through to the common average dwarf and Undumgi that the giant spiders really ARE allies. And for that they must interact in a positive manner, even if its just finishing off wounded orcs to save on ammo.

Dwarf spite certainly appreciates the We killing orcs slowly, to the point that without any prompting they've been doing live captures so they can feed orcs to spiders.
