Do the Dwarfs have universities of their own? Do they publish papers? I imagine that Dwarf peer review would be incredibly grueling. Seems like their thoroughness would be excellent for the scientific method.
Dwarfs are infamously territorial about their knowledge. They're in favor of free exchange of knowledge as long as its not their knowledge being exchanged, so its more like elite loremasters showing off at each other

Or see Kragg- very happy to show off to (and show up) Thorek with his Rune of Superior Skill, but he'd shave his head before outright telling Thorek how he did it.

That's a shame and trying to change the culture would likely be a hundred year or more project considering how long Dwarfs live and all the ones with the most knowledge to publish are the oldest and most conservative. At this rate the College's might have more institutional knowledge then the Dwarf kingdom in the near future.

Well, we could always just... Huh.

I can't actually think of a way to solve this problem with necromancy. That's a novel feeling.

... Just, give me a second, I'll brainstorm something!

Maybe if we killed them all, raised them and forced them to share info? Nah, that's just building a new dwarf society, not changing the old one. Maybe if we just raised the longbeards, we could pretend it was their idea all along...

... You know what's scary? This was the first thought in my head after I read the last line and before I read this one. Oh god, it's spreading! Quick, everyone! save yourselves!
also someone put me out of my misery before I become another abomination.

Step 1: Raise the Ancestor Gods.
Step 2: Have AGs tell Dwarfs to knock it off with the info hoarding.
Step 3: ????
Step 4: Profit.

If a job is worth doing (with Necromancy) it is worth massively overdoing (with Theurgery).

Amber: Is the Supreme Patriarch still the Patriarch of his college?
In the Great Deed chapter, it was mentioned that Alric was the previous Supreme Patriarch, so presumably yes.

Speaking of, @BoneyM, I was re-reading the early chapters and noticed this:
Sometimes, you feel the burden of your allegiances as a physical weight upon your shoulders. The allegiances of a wizard are lain down in stone in the Articles of Imperial Magic. To the Empire and the Emperor, first and foremost - easy enough. Next, theoretically, to the Supreme Patriarch, but you've yet to have any allegiance to Paranoth the Wanderer play any part in your life. Then to the laws and ideals of the Grey Order, which, well... you've always cleaved closer to the ideals than the letter of the actual laws. Then to the Patriarch, which might become relevant one day should you learn who the Patriarch actually is. Then to the 'authorities you serve in the course of your duties': to wit, Van Hal. And, finally other superiors within the Grey Order - most specifically, your Master.
The Supreme Patriarch during the Purge of Haunted Hills in 2476 was Paranoth, yet in 2480.5 Dragomas was SP, and Alric was his predecessor. Was this an error, or did Alric really serve for less than four years?

That's a good example of the importance of keeping proper notes. I probably had all sorts of plans for Paranoth at one point and forgot them during the Great Hiatus. Current canonical timeline, as enshrined in a text document, is Alric-Paranoth-Alric-Dragomas, but Paranoth wouldn't have still been in charge at that point. Edited.

You forgot step 1.5: Get you shit absolutely wrecked by annoyed Ancestor Gods :V

Time travel is the answer. I'm quite sure that Mathilde is short enough to pass for Valaya. This also has the side-effect of neatly solving the problem of Mathilde's lacking love life!

On my reread I came across this quote, from the aftermath of taking Drakenhof, the town.
The Greatswords appear to have been wiped out to a man, with Markus having led them into battle time and time and time again until there were none left, with Markus himself last being seen charging the town hall with only a few Slayers for company shortly before the cannons started firing.
I overread it the first few times I've gone through the story, and I didn't see anyone in the thread commenting either, but this time it really struck me. Markus and a few slayer charging a strongpoint, just before it gets obliterated by cannon fire. It's understated, but it's really a quite powerful image if you consider it a little. What a sad end.
Though I'd like to think he'd have been happy with how Mathilde has used the skills he taught her.
