I like the idea of opening our huge library to the Karak, with some restrictions. It feels more in the spirit of a Grey Wizard with a vow of poverty compared to sitting on our ten thousand silver ingots until we need them for something.

[X] [RUNE] No purchase.

Ultimately, even ignoring all the other arguments about the sword, a 25 favir sword is going to have a big ass shift in how Mathilde operates both OOC and IC. There will be expectations that Mathilde will actually use her 25 favor sword that took a year and a half for Kragg to create, and it will eat the narrative space of the other cool stuff she could do. Her job is to be the court wizard, she dabbles in spying and has a bucketload of research to do and now people will expect her to go and use the sword instead of, for example, researching the snake-juice, or studying theurgy, or bettering her dispel capabilities so that she can bully enemy spellcasters.

Look at how juggling actions this turn went. If Mathilde had laboratories to study the snake juice she wouldn't have had the actions to spy; and further turns when her assignment wouldn't be so relatively light on actions will be far more common.

EDIT:

[X] [ARMOUR] Make no recommendation.

While I really like the other two, he has skills and experiences that would work best with making the human community trade focused.

[X] [ARMOUR] It should be returned to the Hold it was stolen from, to build strong ties among the Karaz Ankor.
Gromril armor is precious, and the hold needs a good diplomatic reputation, so I say return it.

I do not honestly care about a new weapon, or the long running argumentation that has so much space consumed on the thread, so I abstain on that.

Currency is meant to be spent.
Yeah, but that doesn't mean that everything that can be bought should be bought. Rich nobles are rightly criticised for spending huge amounts of wealth on utterly pointless, supremely wasteful tat instead of something that could properly benefit the people around them, or at least themselves. These hundreds of gold worth of romance books? Some of which Mathilde can't even read? That's a prime example of that sickening level of wasteful luxury. Just because we can do it doesn't mean we should.

That money we're spending on useless tat could be used to buy books that might actually help her with her job, or at the very least go to feeding and housing thousands of the Empire's impoverished. Not one of the Empire's gods looks kindly upon this, and while our accomplishments may make it so the Grey College would let it slide, they'll definitely see it that at some level, to some degree, we've been corrupted by our wealth.

Here's a vote that's the leading library vote with the romance books struck out. Spending hundreds of gold on romance books - particularly those books we can't even read - is wasteful in the extreme, the sort of thing that overly rich and callous nobles rightfully get flak for. That gold is much better spent on charity, or in fact anything else.

If you don't mind me asking (and of course I don't mean to pressure you), why not vote for no purchases re: the library? It's 32 to 30, if the tally is right.

Edit: Okay it should be good now the tally took a bit to update which confused me

I am not fond of "Wasting hundreds of gold coins on romance novels." This is turning an endearing character quirk into a dangerous excess.

What do I vote for in order to avoid this winning?

Everyone, sing the Grounding Rod song!
You know, people keep voting against it, but I have heard zero actual arguments against it.

I'm talking about the [Enchantment] option. Now I know this thread flies, but let me try this the fourth time, and maybe this time it sticks:

We should buy a Grounding Rod. It helps with miscasts. We can buy it for 1-3 favor from the Colledge. This is sensible. We should buy a grounding rod.

Now since this keeps getting lost and people keep voting against it without any argument made, I'm going to try and make this post a bit more noticeable. Like so:

Grounding Rod, Grounding Rod,
Grounds whatever a rod can,
Will it stop, everything?
Magic miscasts, nasty sting,
Look out!
Here comes the grounding rod.

Is he strong?
Listen mage,
He's made with magic sage,
Can he ground magic true?
Take a look around you.
Hey, there
There is a safe way.

In the chill of night
At the scene of a fight
Like a steady, dear friend,
He'll be with you till the end.

Grounding Rod, Grounding Rod,
Each would like a Grounding Rod,
Death and Shame
If ignored,
Safety is his reward.

To him, life is a great big bang up
Wherever there's a hang up
You'll find the Grounding Rod.

Everyone, sing the Grounding Rod song!

EDIT: Source.

Yeah, we can always buy books next turrn. No big deal waiting six months. But we're in one of those momentum situations where it's either the winning book plan or no books; there's no room for an amendment.

You vote for "No Purchase" and we can try again next turn with a more modest list.

Don't worry about it, and it's because I saw the value in all those other books and still wanted to get them. I'll approval vote for No Purchases if it's late and my vote doesn't get traction though.

@VillaininGlasses I accidentally left in a purchase of romance books. You may want to update your vote to my edited vote.

Honestly, it's strange that large parts of this thread expressed concerns over the Grey College Bussars, and about a week or so later, there's a leading vote for buying hundreds of gold worth of frivolous luxuries in the term of romance books - and the Bussars are watching Mathilde closely, so I'd imagine there's a good chance that kind of frivolous expenditure would raise eyebrows at least. We haven't even really started to build our tower/penthouse, and no-one has gotten around as far as I've known to estimate how much that far more crucial endeavor cost. Sure, we've stumbled onto a windfall, but as it's been said, it's a one-off windfall, and we shouldn't be behaving like stereotypical lottery winners. We are literally abandoning prudence on an amusing book club meme, on books in languages Mathilde is not literate in, that takes Mathilde's characterization into a direction I am personally uncomfortable with.

What do I vote for in order to avoid this winning?

[] [LIBRARY] No purchase.

This is a very close vote, with a surprisingly small number of participants.

If my count is correct, that comes to a total bonus of +44, or an overall cost of 2200 crowns.

If we exclude the romance purchases and go with Andres plan how many crowns would that be? I'm still very uncomfortable with liquidating anything above 1000 crowns on books until I get a sense of how much the penthouse cost.

My thoughts is probably:
Up(Tower 1):
-Study. We want a bonus to book research and while we don't want the library proper to be exposed to elements, reading would probably be nicer in the Tower portion. ALSO backup sleeping area if we're renovating our sleeping area.
-Workshop. Where we work on enchanting and stuff. I'm not sure if we want it in Tower 2 where we're focusing a lot of magic or if we want to separate our magical mishap zones physically.
-Eight Peaks Observation Point. We'd probably want magically projected zoom lenses here and a LOT of open space in every direction to maximize the optics.

Up(Tower 2)- Waystone network extension goes here:
-Laboratory. Next floor up, we want this as far from the rest of the mountain as we can after all, and easy access to air to vent, without simultaneously having to vent stray magic through more delicate stuff or worse, venting anywhere past the vault.
-Ritual chamber. Next floor up. High energy magic goes here if we do those. Got a nice commanding view of the area to target things with. I'm not sure if we want it to be a third tower or part of the second.

Penthouse: Sitting Room/Audience chamber. This is where we'd let other people in.

Down1:
-Library. The topmost 'down' floor so we can set up mirrors to bring natural light inside without exposing it to the elements.

Down2:
-Vault. Where we secure our important stuff, nobody but the builders ever see it. No branches from this, and it should be hidden behind our smut.
-Residence. Where we sleep. If we have more people living with us like an apprentice or Wolf grows big enough we'd convert this into a living room/hub and dig further down.

@veekie : Do you have an estimate as to how much your proposed plan would cost? There is a chance that this vote would affect how much funds we really have to devote to Mathilde's penthouse.

So the leading vote is for these books:

Imperial Texts: Extensive/Esoteric Skaven, Extensive Skaven Magic, Extensive Greenskin Magic, Antiquarian Grey Magic (2 College Favor), Extensive Amber Magic, Extensive/Esoteric Romance Novels, Extensive/Esoteric Linguistics, Extensive Warpstone, Extensive Morr, Extensive Karaz Ankor. Dwarf Texts: Extensive Greenskin Magic, Extensive Skaven Magic, Extensive Romance Novels, Extensive Linguistics, Extensive Daemons. Brettonian Texts: Extensive Romance Novels. Tilean Texts: Extensive Romance Novels.

If my count is correct, that comes to a total bonus of +44, or an overall cost of 2200 crowns.

We currently have 6287 crowns in silver ingots that can be spent freely within Karak Ankor and 2161 crowns in silver ingots that can be spent freely. So this library purchase is very roughly 25% of our total funding.

The fact that you'd need to get 33 people to vote for it without pinging anyone.
33 isn't many given the votes this game can get, or in fact even compared to the votes already placed this turn alone. There's still twelve hours to go til voting closes too.

Either this one:
[X] [LIBRARY] Imperial Texts: Extensive/Esoteric Skaven, Extensive Skaven Magic, Extensive Greenskin Magic, Antiquarian Grey Magic (2 College Favor), Extensive Amber Magic, Extensive/Esoteric Linguistics, Extensive Warpstone, Extensive Morr, Extensive Karaz Ankor. Dwarf Texts: Extensive Greenskin Magic, Extensive Skaven Magic, Extensive Linguistics, Extensive Daemons.
Or this one:
[] No purchase.

You vote for "No Purchase" and we can try again next turn with a more modest list.
There is a... fair, if not overly big chunk of time left before votes are closed, so I'll try my luck with Andres'es list. If it fails to gain traction and no books are truly the only choice, I'll revote.

[X] [SPIDER] The We can be a powerful military ally against the Skaven.
[X] [RUNE] 25 Favour Sword
[X] [ARMOUR] It should be reforged into a worthy commemoration of the Karak's rebirth.
[X] [LIBRARY] Imperial Texts: Extensive/Esoteric Skaven, Extensive Skaven Magic, Extensive Greenskin Magic, Antiquarian Grey Magic (2 College Favor), Extensive Amber Magic, Extensive/Esoteric Linguistics, Extensive Warpstone, Extensive Morr, Extensive Karaz Ankor. Dwarf Texts: Extensive Greenskin Magic, Extensive Skaven Magic, Extensive Linguistics, Extensive Daemons.

No purchase is the only option to stop it from winning, due to voting rules.
I mostly posted that vote to hopefully get the ball rolling I also voted for no Purchase and added the new library vote into my earlier vote because, you know approval voting.
Let me check if the tally is counting how I wanted.
