Vote changed to this. Seems prudent over spending so much money over a joke.

There's still almost twelve hours until the voting ends. More than enough time for a reversal.
33 isn't many given the votes this game can get, or in fact even compared to the votes already placed this turn alone. There's still twelve hours to go til voting closes too.
There is a... fair, if not overly big chunk of time left before votes are closed, so I'll try my luck with Andres'es list. If it fails to gain traction and no books are truly the only choice, I'll revote.
In theory, yes. In practice, if you three vote for Andres's plan, assuming no changes, the hundreds of purchases worth of romance novels wins due to vote splitting.

You're being overly pessimistic. Approval voting is a thing, so worst case scenario we start approval voting and succeed in getting no purchases past buying romance books. 12 hours is plenty of time for an option to get 30 or so votes anyhow, so even without approval voting it stands a pretty good chance of winning.

[X] [LIBRARY] No Purchase

I don't want to burn money on books we can't read. I'm fine with the most extensive romance colection in the Old World as long as we can read it. Going beyond that smacks of pointless excess.

I, for one, am voting for both, because while I like the romance-less library setup, I don't want to split the vote. Approval voting at its finest. If our library vote loses because of that approval voting, then we just do it again. or we modify our votes should we see our library winning, beaten by none, and the romance out of the picture. There are options that do not split the vote.

You know, people keep voting against it, but I have heard zero actual arguments against it.

I'm talking about the [Enchantment] option. Now I know this thread flies, but let me try this the fourth time, and maybe this time it sticks:

We should buy a Grounding Rod. It helps with miscasts. We can buy it for 1-3 favor from the Colledge. This is sensible. We should buy a grounding rod.

Now since this keeps getting lost and people keep voting against it without any argument made, I'm going to try and make this post a bit more noticeable. Like so:

Grounding Rod, Grounding Rod,
Grounds whatever a rod can,
Will it stop, everything?
Magic miscasts, nasty sting,
Look out!
Here comes the grounding rod.

Is he strong?
Listen mage,
He's made with magic sage,
Can he ground magic true?
Take a look around you.
Hey, there
There is a safe way.

In the chill of night
At the scene of a fight
Like a steady, dear friend,
He'll be with you till the end.

Grounding Rod, Grounding Rod,
Each would like a Grounding Rod,
Death and Shame
If ignored,
Safety is his just reward.

To him, life is a great big bang up
Wherever there's a hang up
You'll find the Grounding Rod.

Everyone, sing the Grounding Rod song!
Is that how they work? In the video game, I thought you plant the earthing rod and then can cast without fear of miscast, rather than letting you reroll miscasts which would be a much more powerful effect. Rerolls would make more sense in a quest/tabletop format, I suppose...

There is no such thing as 'without fear of miscast' when it comes to battle magic, both in this quest and in canon.

ah, good point. thank you. in my defense, its 1:30 am.

edit: case in point: I forgot to ping @Candesce who I meant to address this to

That vote still seems to be spending another rather extravagant ~1,400 gold or so on books.

[X] [LIBRARY] No purchase.

Should probably get around to other votes, too.
[] [ARMOUR] Make no recommendation.
[x] [ARMOUR] It should be reforged into a worthy commemoration of the Karak's rebirth.

Here's a vote that's the leading library vote with the romance books struck out. Spending hundreds of gold on romance books - particularly those books we can't even read - is wasteful in the extreme, the sort of thing that overly rich and callous nobles rightfully get flak for. That gold is much better spent on charity, or in fact anything else.

Let's get some perspective. Mathilde has spent, less than what, 5% of her disposable wealth on those books? I'm willing to bet that she's spent proportionally less of her money on luxuries than anybody in this thread and almost everyone in the Empire.

And it's not the sort of recurring expenditure that would make that a problem. It's one and she's done pretty much forever. If you won't be convinced by that or the motivation for learning new languages that foreign books provide, then at least keep the Imperial Extensive collection. At 50/14000, that's not even 0.005% of the Ranald haul.

Let her have that much at least. This is her one foible. Considering all she's done, Mathilde deserves some nice things.

If we exclude the romance purchases and go with Andres plan how many crowns would that be? I'm still very uncomfortable with liquidating anything above 1000 crowns on books until I get a sense of how much the penthouse cost.

By my count the total is +33, or 1650 crowns... though I'm not sure how the rules work with "upgrading" existing libraries. Do we just pay the difference or do we just pay the whole thing over again?

You know, I'm beginning to suspect that no one with a Library plan actually bothered to work out how much it costs. They just figured we had "enough" and didn't care to actually add up the costs.

[X] [ENCHANTMENT] No purchase.
[X] [SPIDER] The We can be a welcome addition to the multispecies community of Karak Eight Peaks.
[X] [ARMOUR] It should be returned to the Hold it was stolen from, to build strong ties among the Karaz Ankor.
[X] [UNDUMGI] Soizic, Bretonnian Questing Knight
[X] [LIBRARY] No purchase.

Note: Linguistics is especially useful. We can stack bonuses on the same topics as long as they are from different cultures. The problem is learning to read books about those cultures which is helped by having access to linguistics books.

I'll be honest, Id be in favor of Mathilde learning new languages. Im just not sure getting books is the right way to do that, or if that would even work.

@Alliterate, though I may be wrong (@Quest can correct me) I think the amber magic is primarily to help with the spiders, and what needs to be done to help along communications and coordination. could be wrong though.

Which leads to yet more impetus to spend hundreds, or thousands of gold to pick up +2 buffs here and there scattered across specific fields.
Focus, and I'd be happier.

I notice people aren't actually voting for charity.

What price, attempting to grant bonuses to every roll we engage in?

Vote for Andes's rollback if you must (you know, if you have neither romance nor fun in your soul), but voting No Purchase means we lose out on bonuses to Grey Magic (our bread and butter), Skaven and Greenskin Magic (kind of relevant), Skaven and Greenskin themselves (ditto), Karaz Ankor (we live here now), Warpstone (the Skaven warptech clan is here), Daemons (you know, snakejuice) and a couple other things.
