Though if we take the armor of Van Tarnus, we might be able to study it and the elf crown and the enchantment on the waystone foundation and up our enchanting capability to the point we could recreate some of it with gromril.

It's strange how rarely we explore Mathilde's knack for enchantment.
Couldn't we probably do that with a single College boon from the Bright Order to have access to the armour to study it? (Which, of course, would mean putting more things on our plate to use AP on but the same reasoning applies to taking the armour for the purposes of study!)

Yes, that's true but there are much less examples of Sally the example in the setting than Jim. So even assuming you're correct we're still on average safer.

My original post was answering this

When has Mathilde ever needed encouragement to go pick ludicrously dangerous fights without the Armour of Tarnus?

Specifically the idea that Mathilde gets into as many dangerous fights as she possibility can anyway so the armor would improve her safety in every way

You know... if we are going to be trying to reclaim Empire land, with all our connections to Dwarves and Lorelon, doesn't the Drakwald make a lot more sense as a target, instead of further trying to piss off Nordland by carving out chunks out of it with the Forest of Shadows?

Sure, it would be hellwar, but a worthy one. And instead of founding a new province, we'd be restoring a lost one. I mean, if we're going to seriously consider "shoot for the moon" ideas, that's another. Re-establish the Drakwald Province. If Rosvita becomes Empress, and our Godson is ruling in Altdorf... It's ambitious, granted, but something to be considered. And perhaps laughed off.

And perhaps not.
(It also gets us(and the Empire) closer to Marienburgh)

I'd rather piss off Norland than Middleland, it doesn't matter how pissed off the former are as long as they are too weak to do anything about it, on the other hand Middleland is an ally we would be losing by taking their Drakwald land.

Yeah we could, and even if we don't take the armor right now, I think that's something worth doing.

But I think that between the research opportunities and the whole becoming bulletproof thing, the armor is a good choice for Mathilde given the fights and multiple wars we're looking down the barrel of.

Can the same not be said of enchanted We-silk robes in the latter case? (Perhaps not literally in terms of being bulletproof... Or perhaps it is. We haven't tested it yet!)

it does feel more than a little anticlimactic to cut off the potential for Mathilde's own We-silk robes after such a long wait.
This is the best argument I've seen against the armor, but ultimately I feel I'm putting my head through too many hoops to fully enjoy an admittedly awesome skyship. Besides, the part we were waiting on the silk for was Winning All Of Trade. If we had rolled well on making our current robes I doubt We-silk robes would have ever entered the discussion. The armor is amazing, plus it's legendary, plus it's aesthetic. It offers another step to every gear slot being a masterwork legendary item uniquely built around Mathilde.

My favorite option is still the eight boon shotgun haul, though, which does include the best possible defense enchantments on We-silk robes. So, yknow, if it's super important to you I'm down for a comeback train from that direction.

I'm not seeing how that would lead to Hippogriff cavalry being more viable than pegasus cavalry?
The hard part of it would be to first get a big enough breeding population of trained hippogriffs, and then train the chicks of that generation (each of which takes roughly a year to become full-grown), and repeat until you have a stable population of hippogriff chicks that can imprint onto each knight of this hypothetical order.

It's explicitly much harder than to get a similar concentration of pegasi (who are about as tolerant of humans as regular horses), which is why nobody's done it until now. but it should be doable, unlike with gryphons (who will outright be trying to kill their riders at every step until they're trained, where the hippogriff will mostly just be troublesome and violent with other people and animals).

The benefit of it all will be that Hippogriffs are way more dangerous in a fight than even a Royal Pegasi.

I'm honestly not really enthused by any of the options. I can't really think of anything the ship would do for us. But I dislike the aesthetic of the Armor. About in order of preference, but it's not by much.

The approval vote's there for the multiple College boons on my end for a reason! And, as said, if people are really interested in the armour for the purposes of study, there's always the option to swap out enchanting the gyrocarriage for access to it... In fact, I'll make a plan in that direction, just in case the above proves true.

I'll take anything remotely aspirational over how terminally boring the Armor is.

Not the actual silk, unfortunately. The armor slot gets one piece, and if we pick up Armor of von Tarnus, it's gonna be Armor of von Tarnus, which has the properties it has, including being able to stack with a cast of AA.
I think it might stack with the actual silk, actually, as long as it's not enchanted. I'm assuming the armor is just that, armor, and wouldn't include breeches or a gambeson over which the armor would typically be worn, so Mathilde getting those articles made with We-silk would mean extra protection for what one would think would be vulnerabilities. Maybe even add a tabard of We-silk on top for added style and protection, and also kind of hide the armor from identification.

Of course that all hinges on my assumption being correct, which it might not be.

We would not include gambesson on the armor, because it is part of armor.
So, i would not expect the silk to stack, because now you would have 3 layers.
Enchantment, Armor (or Tarnus), armor (silk robe).
Sure in theory it should work, but we have equipment slots for a reason, and the reason is not realism, and i would rather not open this door.

Adding a layer of silk, even really good silk, is not going to make a meaningful difference to someone who is already wearing some of the best magical armour the Empire has plus Lord Magister level Aethyric Armour. That level of protection is an absurdity that exists in utter defiance of any notion of physical laws.

It's basically just accessorizing, at this point.

I don't really think studying it is going to pay a lot of dividends.
@Boney how would Max feel about researching the von Tarnus armor? Is it something he's already done?
He would probably wonder what you're expecting a Gold Wizard to get from a Bright Magic enchantment.
Replace "Gold" with "Grey." Plus, unlike the Phoenix Crown, the Armor of von Tarnus is readily available for Collegiate Wizards to study. It's right there. And the Brights are already the College that is most into enchantment, and unlike us von Tarnus was using the same Wind they are. So what I'm saying is that undoubtedly generations of talented Bright enchanters have poked at it when it's not in use, and yet it remains something that has not been duplicated or systematized. Odds that we can somehow do better without any advantages beyond "very good Windsight" (yes, we have the Enchanter trait, but what do you want to bet that some of the Brights who have studied it have had something comparable?) and at least one major disadvantage seem really bad: I certainly would not vote to spend AP on it, I would prefer to just take a stab at Windherded robes.

Well, that and redundancy. There's enchantments for ignoring enchantments on armour, there's enchantments for going through armour like it isn't even there, and Aethyric Armour can be dispelled by a good spellcaster. But you'll be sorely pressed to find an enemy who's going to be carrying all three at once, or able to concentrate all three for the purpose of killing one person.
