I am in favour of Learning because I think Dwarfs can find a good Stewardship candidate - hell, Belegar can always assume direct control, he probably has some pretty serious Sterwardship chops - but they lack anyone nearly as capable in handling Weird Shit or going off on deep penetration scouting as Mathilde.

Kragg is our better in several respects, but not any which relate to gathering intel; plus he is probably departing home soon enough?

I kind of think you're wanting Mathilde to take up one of the martial adviser slots with that.

Honestly in my opinion
Ultimately, I expect Mathilde to stay at least as long as it takes to reconquer all of Karak Eight Peaks and secure the Dwarfs position here. We don't know how long that'll take or what will happen in that period of time. I don't expect the reconquest to take her whole life though.
Barring something terrible happening in the empire that needs her urgent attention or the Grey College flexing their pull to get her to be assigned somewhere.

Martial is for more straightforward scouting, I presume; Learning is for poking esoteric/weird threats for which Rangers are not equipped - Avatar of Gork, figuring out that Dragon Ogres likely eat Azyr, fetching Amber Wizards to talk to nascent spider hivemind, very very carefully looking at Skaven "engineering"...basically, I think that anything that requires Study actions or passing Learning/Piety checks to properly understand and react to is a ballpark of Learning advisor, even if it's scouting per se.

edit: but yeah, you are not wrong in that it has a lot of overlap with internal Martial. But I think that emphasis on trying to grok the threats and more in-depth spying and whatnot is suitably different, idk.

I'd assume it would also include raiding expeditions into the unclaimed sections in order to open a sealed vault and retrieve the artifacts.

The best thing about being a respected leader is that if we ask to retire, we can.

People can and do retire in this setting (Anton Senior and Anton Junior! Wilhelmina leaving her job! QM statements about old grey wizards eventually settling down to run an inn and being a casual local spy!) and we never swore to do this forever. We absolutely can leave eventually - although it is generally considered polite to give notice, and if possible to have a heir.

Well they move on from their council jobs really. Anton Junior is still and active noble and Wilhelmina is still doing high powered Stewardship stuff.

I don't mind leaving after K8P is secured in some form, but that's some years away I guess.
Or maybe we stay here forever, idk - although I would no mind trying to shoot for being Emperor's spymaster afterwards. :V Depends on world events at that point.

But anyway, way I see it, Learning advisor Mathilde is basically Belegar's "What the hell is going on?" button. It's fun to read about and it's gonna net us College favours by being all research-y and stuff.
Lack of a good spymaster who'd keep humans in line is concerning though...not sure they have somebody qualified enough to weed out all the spies that are going to flow in with the opened trade.

Hopefully we can agree to lock in an action on whatever comes in fourth place after the epilogue turns end.

I am tempted by scouting, but the fact that we haven't seen Mathilde's friends for over a year OOC is making me want to see them more than another update of scouting.

As far as the money goes...well, we're really not *trying* to make all this money, and we're really trying not to use it for our own personal ends. I think the Grey Order has shown they're willing to recognize that so long as we keep investing the money we make into our jobs and not in such a way that it benefits us directly.

I heavily disagree with what is expected of us as a steward. BoneyM has been clear that K8P has no economy to speak of right now. We will be building that economy and as such, what will be expected of us is up to us. We will be given a wide latitude to work however we want as long as we keep delivering results.

This is a very good point. That trade and mercenaries that we are counting on for driving the wealth and status and opportunities for info gathering? None of it is going to happen unless someone makes it happen. Gets the word out to mercs. Starts getting caravans moving. Builds inns and markets and supply depots.

I think we do need to do stewardship for at least a few years to make sure that the foundation we are assuming comes into being, and I'm pretty sure that delegation means we can research as we do it.

I am worried about threats, but I'll be honest: they are going to be on our doorstep and scheming for the foreseeable future, and we can't stay on a way footing the entire time. Get a sense, yeah, I voted for scouting, but I'd prefer to play Magister Lord than infiltrator.

I have almost no idea what's going on or what I've missed (sigmars balls you guys talk fast). But a tally allows for some semi-tactical voting (and some voting because I just want it to be)

[x] King Belegar is allowing you to use the King's Armoury. Recover your extant study materials from Stirland and tuck them away safely in there.
[X] Remain in Karak Eight Peaks, either in the employ of Belegar or pursuing your research.
[X] Scout the rest of the Eight Peaks, to find out what other horrors are waiting out there.

Incidentally, did I miss any massively informative posts between the last story post and here?

I get what you mean, but I'm okay for skipping it, even though I initially voted for it, because with retrieving study materials winning its not needed as urgently as scouting.

...plus I'm voting for Stewardship and bringing EIC and the spy ring up here when normal turns resume, so it won't be long.

[x] All this time away has made you miss your friends, and you'll be practically next door in Altdorf. Visit Anton and Wilhelmina.

I couldn't say what you missed but you might find the following relevant.

Every Peak will have a Warboss (or Warlord or Master Moulder or Warlock-Engineer or...) and each of them are going to be Up To Something - it's an important part of how I write that every character is a target in motion that is up to their own nefarious deeds rather than waiting around for the protagonist to arrive. This does make K8P somethingof a target-rich environment for Major Shenanigans for Mathilde to get into the middle of. That said, killing Skarsnik would have been a big deal if he had been all grown up and ruining everybody's day, but killing Skarsnik in TYOOS 2478 is a cheeky in-joke for the thread and a complete nothing for Mathilde herself, and derailing Grimgor is an assumption the thread has leapt to which they're having too much fun with to speak against.

As before, dwarvern strategy has no natural place for someone with your abilities, so it is up to you to decide what your role will be.

for why it's perhaps best not leave the scouting purely to the rangers.

Nah. Marienburg has an open temple of Ranald, and it's fantasy Netherlands - basically, the human trade city of the Old World.

Ranald is also a god of gambles and everyone prays to him for luck - and you damn well are a gambler and need every ounce of luck you can get if you embark on trade journey to Ind.

edit:

The core issue here is that we have no intrigue option.
The debate is basically whether Stewardship or Learning will let us do more Intrigue-esque things and in what way.
Can you provide a source for this open to the public temple of Ranald? I cant find it in my 2e and 4e, iirc if a temple is open to all to see then it kinda loses its potency. Also Marienburg authorities came down hard on Ranald worshippers.

Edit: Hans Von Kleptor (most powerful priest of Ranald in Marienburg) tried to organize the cult there, but again no mention of the temple being openly known to the public.

Hey, I just read this entire quest over the last two days of frenzied archive bingeing (thanks to the FoD/ToD community on Discord for pointing me here) when I should have been doing other things, and I wanted to say that this is super awesome even though I knew nothing about Warhammer going in beyond a basic sketch of the WH40K factions.

Not sure how active I'll be, given how ill-equipped I am to participate in decision-making, but wanted to register my approval publicly.
