That is very... saintly. But I think in the long run helping to develop less explosion-prone mages will help to ensure that there are fewer widows and orphans overall. I would be fine with a minor donation to something like that, but not spending all our money on that.

Definitely agree. I mostly want to deflect merc attention from our massive haul, so dedicating a sum 'in memoriam' would be PR and deception and actual charity all in one. But at least 3/4 of the money I want for a runic greatsword, an expansion of niter factories, and setting up a new home base.

Oh I see. The thing to remember there is that ultimately it does not matter what the mercs think, practically speaking the dwarfs are the ones paying out and they are sticklers for contract law. And in terms of imperial law well Dame Mathilde is a noble of the Empire... the mercs are no one. They have no recourse. So by all means toss a bit of the swindled coin back, but don't worry too much about their hard feelings.

Guys, not one manling has to know Mathilde got anything but the standard out of the expedition.

The money exists in paper only for now, and will do so until we make a withdraw.

Fortunately, Belebro is Belebro, so I foresee no problems in delaying taking our cash, of effectively "opening an account" with K8P and getting a dwarf checkbook.
We're a Grey Wizard. We could steal one, and then use the coin to pretend we "found" it.
I'd rather not steal from imperial institutions, especially one as likely well connected as the Zoo.

I bet a lot of very, very influential people want pegasi and griffons, and these are the main providers in the Empire. Not guys to fuck with, even if they are, well, a zoo.

I think our Lustrian Eggs might be just the ticket into getting enough favor that they allow us to purchase a griffon egg, if not trading wholesale.

Unless you meant stealing one from the nest ourselves. I would be against going around looking for one, but if we post a bounty, we can add a clause for the location of the egg. I bet it's a lot easier for someone to confirm an egg is in the nest, than outright steal one.

I'd ignore 2E for what it states about the Master rune of Alaric the mad because they totally fucked it up with it only ignoring armour.

No 2E is absolutely correct about the rune, it works worse than Runefangs themselves on the tabletop too (Runefang is 85 points, ignores armor ans auto-wounds; Rune of Alaric is 50 points but only ignores armor).
What they fucked up is Runefangs themselves - 2E Runefangs, unlike TT ones, are just swords with Alaric's rune slapped on them.

It would still be nice PR. I can imagine that there will be some bitter mercenaries that might spread rumours back in empire of us using magic to cheat, spending some 15-20 % of our winnings on helping families of the fallen would definitely make Mathilde look much better, and it seems very Ranalditan.

"Auto-wound", from my dim and distant memories of WHFRP, wouldn't make much sense in the RPG. You'd need something like 'ignores target Toughness on damage rolls' instead as an equivalent.
Damage was something like 1d6+Weapon bonus+S-T-Armour, way way back then anyway. Damage taken from a bigger pool of wounds.

Its unlikely to be significant.
If they see we're getting paid over three hundred time as much as the average merc, and link it to the gambling, a small donation isn't going to mollify anyone's anger.

If they don't see that amount handed over, there's no one to mollify. That's the better plan.

You know, I've re-read second part of the quest - and it's startling how Kragg's attitude toward Mathilde changed.

On beginning Kragg did not even want to speak in Reikspiel. Just recall that like the one-word explanation when he handed over belt to Mathilde, of how reclutant he was when he deigned to speak about dragon ogre. Now he speaks with Mathilde more a less freely. While he consider her to be ridiculous and expects her to her into (and out of) outrageous situations, but he seem to consider her worthy.

Honestly, it's nice to see.

Edit: though I guess success of expedition lightens up his mood and attitude somewhat.

They are mercenaries, the most untrustworthy people short of outright bandits, any suspicion they might rile up would be meaningless relative to the background suspicion of all mages.

I mean, at our levels a lot of things we want starts requiring favours as much, if not moreso, as money.
So I don't mind 20% for sure, maybe more; we swinged the heist because we wanted to praise Ranald, not because we need money. Better treat it this way - Ranald is a god of wealth redistribution from rich to poor if rich don't need it, after all, and our need for money is...well.
Ranald would sideeye being sheriff of Nottingham as opposed to Robin Hood, yknow? Robin Hood is the Ranaldian Hero.

Anyway, we already have those eggs from Barak Varr. Our Smoke Knights can be mounted on dinosaur-back, no problem.

That's a fair concern, much more so than mercs spreading rumors. I'd say one third is a fair return to Ranaldian causes, we did cheat and lie for it fair and square.

Yeah, I think he'd be alright with spending a third on his causes; especially since we are not going to, like, spend other money on golden toilets or whanots, but probably on useful tools or ways to kill orcs/skaven/etc more efficiently.
