Copying the plan:Maybe I'm remembering it wrong, but I don't think it was, for exactly the reason of avoiding dhar.
Yep, Clarity.[*] Plan Compromise
-[*] MAX: Learning: Rituals from the colleges. Mathilde pays gold costs.
-[*] EGRIMM: Attempt a Windherder enchantment with Egrimm
--[*] Shadowsteed & Clarity, allowing the user to ride all night without sleep
-[*] WEB-MAT: Investigate Gryphon Wood with one or more members of WEB-MAT (JOHANN)
-[*] Personally scrutinize a Waystone as thoroughly as you possibly can.
-[*] Attempt to bring a Major House or Ward into the Waystone Project (Frost)
-[*] Investigate Alric
-[*] EIC: Try to uncover what's going on in Gryphon's Wood.
-[*] LIBRARY: Seek an agreement with a Cult to have access to their libraries (Quinsberry)
-[*] SERENITY: Write a paper: Observations of Johann's prosthetic arm (FRESH)
-[*] COIN: The Night Prowler
He has no Arcane Marks and he's not throwing around high-powered spells, so his brains are only occasionally Ulgu brains. As long as he doesn't cast just before or while using the saddle it should be fine.
I imagine we won't get too much input in the details given how Boney's talked about how formalizing the Shadow Dagger mastery into a proper spell might be tricky, but it's always fun to speculate.Of course, in reality, I would presume any fine grained detail like this would be largely up to Boney if and when we decided to do that, but it just leapt out and struck me, and I couldn't resist gabbing. ^_^
Kill Six Billion Demons said:"Here is my sword," said Intra. "Your semiotics cannot contain it. Its blade is made of gloaming steel, look how it whispers!"
"But Lord Intra," said the assembled, "You have no sword!"
"So it is," said Intra.
I also believe that people had some difficulty making a name for it stick. Shoving Mathilde's name in there felt a bit gauche.
Ulgu represents the razor thin boundary that cuts between light and shadow—this is what allows for spells like the Penumbral Pendulum, which uses that line to scythe through things.
Broadly speaking, if you want to cut something, Ulgu is the wind for it. You could probably make something that cuts with the gold or jade winds, and amber can probably sharpen your claws or something, but cutting itself is covered by Ulgu.
So a spell that can create a "flickersword" of some sort sounds highly doable and likely useful, but I worry it'd be more like a "line of cutting" than an actual sword, which'd make it bad for parrying and make the possibility of applying our swordstyle to it rather dubious.I also want to add that cutting something is always really about boundaries. Cutting is not just abstractly "damaging things", which wouldnt be within Ulgu, but cutting is severing the connections between matter. Cutting through the boundaries.
@BoneyM, also, thoughts on Shadow Knives; during our training we were having trouble with the Shadow Knives spell because they all came out looking like swords instead of knives. Was this an issue because they were harder to throw, or because it meant the spell wasn't stable or something and if we tried to use them for anything they'd cause us to mess up somehow? Also, about how long do our knives last when we hold onto them instead of throwing them? Would it be feasible to make a single really big shadow knife like we were doing to take advantage of our mastery, or could we come up with a variant on the spell to do this, using our Mastery as a creation-trait?
Swords possess many fine qualities, but aerodynamic they ain't. The knives last as long as Mathilde holds and sustains them. And a theoretical shadowsword would not be able to do anything that Branulhune or a shadowknife couldn't do better.
Formalizing a mastery into a new spell is sometimes possible but always unreliable and tricky.
Well, it sounds like the start of a way to pass on a hypothetical teleporting sword style. 'Just' rework the spell until the wizard can basically flicker whether or not they're holding one, and I think it would have most of the properties of wielding Branulhune; ignoring most armor and doing silly lightsaber tricks is what would make the style unique, the anti-magic debuff is more of a personal bonus.
One of my favorite parts of the enchanted items Mathilde's commissioned was the weird and interesting recharge methods. Boney, did you happen to think up one for the Nightrider Saddle?
I don't think it'd be nearly so difficult or unlikely for people to figure out the Rooms of Calamity's secret. Mathilde hardly involves herself with the inter-college community, so we don't get to see this kind of thing on-screen, but aside from the formal academic communication there's sure to be all sorts of informal groups, clubs, friendships, rumor mills, etc. The Rooms must have been quite the topic when we dropped them, and that combined with their obviously strange names would likely have clued quite a few in that something strange might be afoot. It'd only take a partial listing of the Room's names together to guess at the presence of an acronym, and from there it'd be easy enough to get the names of all the rooms from the other Magisters. As with all long running jokes, it began to seep into everything, and I would say it culminated in the frankly way over the top and convoluted scheme of naming each of the Eight Rooms of Calamity in each of the Colleges after a letter in Mathilde's name. Such that only a person who has been to every Room of Calamity, knew their names, and connected the dots (likely because they knew Mathilde), would figure out that it spells M.A.T.H.I.L.D.E.
We can't actually codify Shadow Sword because we haven't invented it yet.

Did you mean Shadow Daggers?

What do you guys think of putting a higher priority on the actions that Eike can't meaningfully contribute to/learn from next turn, seeing as she won't be around yet?
At the bottom of the post:Will she not? I thought she was graduating at "the end of the year", and this was the turn covering the second half of 2488.
- If you decide to take Eike on as your Apprentice, then she will begin at the start of Turn 40, so you will still have the coming turn before she enters your care.
Briefly questioned my own memory for a moment, but...Will she not? I thought she was graduating at "the end of the year", and this was the turn covering the second half of 2488.

Possibly the Colleges operate similar to many real-world schools that split the 'school year' between two calendar years, and the Dean was referring to the school year?Briefly questioned my own memory for a moment, but...
EDIT: Drats, Eshin'd.
Mathilde isn't a Druid, so she might have some road-blocks in the way of learning it.If we are looking for rituals to study I would like to learn the Druid way of drawing power from a waystone. There has to be a reason that Telics did not want humans to keep doing it.

Assuming the Jade Order even still knows how to do it, as opposed to forgetting how to and just sticking with Teclis's method.
Well, we could take 3-4 waystone actions, Eike likely won't be allowed to know the specifics of that, and even if she were, it's unlikely she'll understand anything meaningful from it.What do you guys think of putting a higher priority on the actions that Eike can't meaningfully contribute to/learn from next turn, seeing as she won't be around yet?
That's as much as ten fours! And that's great! It's suspicious that turn fourty is the turn we get an apprentice who's skills and interests align with ours.
You're right, Ranald is really looking out for his most amusing follower. It's suspicious that turn fourty is the turn we get an apprentice who's skills and interests align with ours.
Boney already said the Jade order has it written down somewhere. But also Telic only taught the jade order how to bring out Ghyran not all magic. Actually now that I think about if Mathilde can draw all magic she may be able to do high magic. Because any dhar would be taken in by the waystone. Of course she also creating dhar so yeah never mind about doing high magic.Mathilde isn't a Druid, so she might have some road-blocks in the way of learning it.
