Since Marthilde's a dwarf I wonder how Kragg would react to her applying to be his apprentice. Just a plain "no" while circling the fact it's because he recognizes Mathilde as a human, or entertain the idea then Boney rolls a die for runesmithing aptitude.

She doesn't have the Blood of Thungni, which is a mandatory prerequisite.

Because Boney jokingly responded to someone asking why Kragg wasn't on the Dramatis Personae with a developed opinion of Mathilde with "wait until he's known her for at least 1% of his lifespan".
That is certainly going to be an interesting opinion for Boney to write out. Especially since I remember him once making a comment that if Mathilde had managed all she has with Runesmithing instead of Ulgu, he might have actually considered her as an apprentice.

What's so difficult about it? Mathilde is the cat Belegar got against Kragg's will, which has grown on him, like a fungus. A proper dwarf fungus that is useful for things like making beer, mind.

So Mathilde needs to get blood.
1. Become a vampire
2. Drink the blood of a runesmith,
1. Do a favor for Ranald
2. Have him steal Thungi's blood
We know Mathilde legally has a dwarven soul, so all we need is some assurance that Ranald stole the soul of one of Thungni's descendants. Deciever could probably see to that. :V

I'm not sure how serious this is because of the emoji but Boney has adressed this too. She needs Thungni's blood in the veins of the body she's in now. The blood of any bodies her soul may have previously inhabited are irrelevant.

Souls don't have ancestries—Mathilde's physical, biological, human bloodline needs to be traced directly to Thungni.

We can not loophole ourselves into being a runesmith. It it just not possible.

Remember when the dwarves of Karak Vlag faced extinction and had to teach runesmithing to everyone they could? Even they didn't break the rule restricting the art to Thungni's bloodline, and they were literally trapped in hell with no way out.

If you believe that, and I don't, then it wasn't against his will.
There's a wide gulf between "I don't want this" and "I don't want this enough to endanger the success of the expedition".

As for getting his way? Kragg is the greatest living runelord, and more importantly, the oldest living dwarf. That gives him a tremendous amount of soft power. Belegar would've had the ultimate authority to say no. But that Belegar wasn't the one who owned Mathilde his Karak. He would've been unhappy to lose an asset like Mathilde, but less so than losing Kragg. Not to mention the terrible blow to dwarven moral if Kragg had decided not to come because they were doing things improperly.

I suppose, but I don't think there's any way Kragg's or Belegar's honour would allow it to happen. The Empire is the ally of the Karaz Ankor, and Mathilde is a Master from a registered Empire Guild. He might not have been happy- he never is- but I just don't see a scenario where- pledging only after Mathilde has delivered those messages that greatly increased the size of the Expedition- Kragg could even think of making any such demand.

That's true. I don't much disagree on that. I don't think Kragg would do something like that, and if he did, it would cost him in favor or influence (though he's likely got a giant mountain he never uses anyway).
