I do not disagree with you in principle, like I do not think it is a dead end, but I read that less optimistically than you, more like 'it's not a complete dead end' and less 'the failure has no long term impact'.

The failure was that Mathilde failed to control the magic before she put it in the saddle. Once it was actually there, it was fine. Like failing to fill a bucket with water, but you tripped and dropped everything—doesn't mean that buckets are bad for carrying water, just that you made a mistake.

Fair enough, like I said I would like to windherd again.

That said I have not seen many options that interest me in the Hysh/Ulgu combinations. I think we should get one of the golds to learn enchanting, preferably Max and then use that. I think we could get a lot more use out of say putting gold armor in our robes, particularly as the ones we have now are not our best work anyway.

What are the chances of him mitigating the blow like Alkharad did? The sword has to cut through the sedan first, so if his senses and reflexes are sharp enough, he might be able to survive.

I would love to use Collage favour to make the Thumilble, but not sure the thread will be moved for that.
Considering how contentious Windherding already is, I can't imagine matters would be improved by tacking on a resource expenditure before we have much confidence in the nature of the returns.

If you're absolutely desperate for Windherding, vote to study Chamon Windsoak mushrooms. It's not enchanting, but it is a problem that needs solving, whereas Windherding tends to be a solution in search of a problem.

@Boney For tying up loose ends, does Alric have any reason to suspect Heidi's identity is fake? I think Alric was hoping to gain the Empress' patronage so he shouldn't suspect her, but thread speculation has me unsure if Alric actually has different motives.

I am totally fine spending the College Favour. We've got plenty now and not a lot of ways to use it unless we want to buy books directly. The real cost is that if we aren't doing it with a WEBMAT employee, it costs a personal action.

I think that once we hit the breakpoint of "Mathilde knows enough to feel comfortable doing this" (i.e. not rolling single digits) we can try for actually useful items like the Thurible and such; Boney's hinted that there's a tech tree of possibilities, but we don't get to know what it is until we pay the cost of entry by actually researching it, and our first go at it was so terrible from our end that we didn't get that.

Those two things are very dissimilar to each other. You can't just say "if you like X, you should do Y instead" because they are different things.

People want to research windherding because it's a completely new aspect of enchanting that no one has done before, and we don't know what possibilities it will unlock.

The windsoak mushrooms, however, have all ready been researched, and whilst we don't have a viable strain of Charmon or Shysh shrooms, we know what they do once we grow them—they'll give the person who consumes them a small, tempory boost in magical power, perfect for journeymen and perpetuals, but of limited use to magisters and battle wizards.

It's not very not sure what's the right word, etiquette?, to ask for a reward for doing something you weren't paid to do. Even if we get something it probably won't really be much. Probably just some college favor in exchange for goodwill.
This is also literally what our job is, as a Lady Magister of the Grey Order.
I feel that asking for a reward for doing this from a Lady Magister of the Light Order is somewhat, gauche, at best.

Chamon mushrooms are completely unrelated to windherding. I also reject the idea that it is a solution in search of a problem. It is a method to become a better wizard, a way to improve Mathilde's capabilities in battle and to improve her gear.

I would like to once more restate my opposition to finishing the spell book. We have better things to spend AP on than pointless completionism.

The reward would be from stopping alric from getting the credit.
But yeah, I don't think asking now will look good. We do get some street cred from killing a cultist... And maybe some credit from the unfähigers (shudder) but that might be it.

We were told that something like Windherding exists already, but that the Colleges can only do it on a much larger scale so the Winds are more easily separated.

As Regimand presented to us twice during this miniarc, Cloak Activity is useful.
In addition to this, I'd like to have the full spellbook under our belt before we acquire Eike. Granted, that's a few years from now (assuming the thread votes to be her Master, but I am confident it will), but with Cloak Activity being so damn useful, well, might as well.

"Might as well" ignores AP tradeoffs, and while it is useful it is far from being important- we have other tools for the same jobs.

And it's not like we learned all our stories from our master either, not by a long shot, so I'm not sure why Eike makes a difference.

To play devils advocate on the Mira payment argument, when we last spoke to her she said she couldn't give us access to more resources because was too busy trying to maintain her control over the order.

With Alric denied of his glory, that job becomes a lot easier for Mira, and in theory she should have enough freedom to release more resources for our literally world saving project, so I don't really see much wrong with informing her of this change in circumstances, and then reminding her that she still has an opportunity to contribute further to the project and wow that sounds really underhanded now that I say it out loud.

As for the spell book, well, as has been pointing out, we're spending an AP to learn cloak activity and we get two other spells for free. And cloak activity is a very useful spell indeed.
