And salary is not the problem here, the problem is that a pilot that is wherever Mathilde is to be ready when she needs them is a pilot that can't fly a gyrocopter in defence of the Karak.

That is a fair enough point - though if AV is valuable for Anvils of Doom then at least that could maybe be laundered off for pilots (if not through K8P then by asking Thorek to sells it to KaK or Zhufbar in exchange for renting a pilot)?

Considering how Dwarfs are about every craftsman receiving proper payment:

For the pride of the Dawi would not allow them to work for free.

Does this mean that Mathilde is not working for K8P and any the Waystone info uncovered is hers to give or sell to Belegar (or whoever) from a dwarf perspective?

K8P is a partner in the Waystone Project, they are a a partner with nothing to give, but we cannot exactly kick them out on the grounds of being dead weight that lacks any experts. We are selling the lie that the hold had something to do with the Waystones coming back on line, also it would be hurtful to Belegar.

[X] Plan: Slow and Steady Research with Double Recruitment

I'd really have preferred if we got started on Windherder but this is fine too I guess.

K8P gives Mathilde legitimacy. Without their support Cadaeth wouldn't have approached Mathilde. Mathilde's insights on the Waagh are good and all but without the Waystones of K8P coming online there is no Waystone project.

I was just doing some research on other magical traditions, and I'm reminded how much we want to recruit the Ice Witches. Note these quotes from Realm of the Ice Queen. First, the spell Tap:

You draw magical power from an ancient sacred
site, such as an Ogham, stone circle, or sacred grove, and you use it to power a ritual. You may roll an extra die to determine your Casting Total for a ritual if you cast it immediately after a successful use of tap. This extra die does not contribute towards determining Tzeentch's Curse, the Wrath of God, or similar. Versions of this spell are known by many ice witches and several of the Kislevite cults.

Then what the Ice Witches use to cast:

Due to their proximity to the Shadowlands, Kislev's witches long ago learned to avoid the Chaos Winds, for they blow strongly in the north and almost always herald corruption and mutation.

Thus, they mastered alternative methods of casting spells. This difference has helped build their comparatively good reputation, for they are not so readily associated with the Ruinous Powers.

The Chaos Winds are almost certainly the Winds of Magic.

Before invading the Old World, the first ice witches practised their magic on the Endless Steppe. Unlike their Kurgan neighbours—who worshipped the Great Eye and channelled the dangerous magic it seeped—the Gospodars learned to tap the cold power coursing through the land. Although this magic did not carry the same risks of mutation, it was difficult to control and often killed unwary witches. Many centuries later, things are little different.

Using magic coursing through the land not the directly magic from the warp gate.

You need access to Ice Magic to cast your spells. In Kislev, this is never a problem because even in summer, the leylines are flooded with chill power, and your spells can be cast normally.

Using magic from leg lines. Also interesting:

In Kislev, you channel magic already "cleansed" by the Ancient Widow's cold heart, so you are less susceptible to Tzeentch's Curse; however, Ice Magic is a harsh mistress, and sometimes the flows are too strong for you to control.

Magic can be processed to make it more tractable. Also notable;

Magic leaves its stamp upon those using it. Even the witches of Kislev—who avoid channelling the Winds of Magic directly— are at risk.

Suggesting that they use the Winds of Magic indirectly.

Together this makes me think that the Ice Witches have built a magical tradition based around tapping things like the Waystone network. Of all the human traditions, they seem most likely to know something useful.

As a side thought about the Jade College, rereading the section about Teclis' recruitment of some of the druids to found the order, it sounds like the druids were like the Kurgan shamans, and that they worshiped Ghyran anthropomorphised as the Great Mother, and their schism was over Teclis' 'revelation' that it was an impersonal Wind, not a god.

I want to save the mushrooms for an action with Pan as we recruit her,
We already took the 'have Pan help with mushrooms' action. We got everything but the Metal and Death versions. And I very much doubt the Jade Wizard is going to be any further help with Metal and Death.
And quite honestly I very much doubt we will ever have the AP available to throw another action at the mushrooms. They were marginal when we had eight to investigate, two is a waste.

If you want a Pan collaboration we have far better options. Like the Seed. Or those Waytrees.

Probably we could get full access. We would just need to become the Grey Collage spymaster to do so. And that is a very large hat to add to the pile.

[X] Plan: Slow, Steady And Divinely Empowered Wins The Race
Hugo Bann is not a higher priority than getting the Light Collage to back the project.

[X] Plan: Slow and Steady Research with Double Recruitment
Far better than the original 'slow and steady' plan. Shame about the Serenity paper.

Dislike the Serenity paper and actively hate the EIC option.

[X] Plan Deathbybunnies V2
Ritual class of uncertain utility. Directly pokes a Wizard Lord. Bad paper.

Actually, on second thoughts, I'm... wary of using the coin on the Damsels. Ranald is outlawed in Bretonnia, after all.

It probably won't be a problem, but they are also the people most likely to notice his meddling.
He can visit, but he's not allowed to stay, to paraphrase what we were told in Bretonnia.

My take is that we can't promote him to people or help him get established but we can use the coin there as we wish.

My understanding was that Mathilde is Karak Eight Peak's contribution (or at least half of it with the other half being the Colleges) and that Belegar is either Mathilde's direct employer or has hired WEB MAT to do the Waystone research.

The question is who is Mathilde representing - that can be K8P, the Colleges or herself as a noble (or some combination of the above).

Now now, Mathilde does have some avenues available that most lords don't have.

Nothing stops us from going up to a wrecked gyrocopter, pulling out the broken pilot and fixing them up with some hard work and a bit of elbow grease. Yes, it probably won't run as well as if we got a new pilot straight from the Karaks, and it'll definitely need more care and maintenance, but I think we could pull it off no problem. We have our trusty Dawi Repair Manual, after all.

Silly Dawi, so dedicated to their pursuit of perfection that they're willing to throw out perfectly good spare parts after just a single crash…
Reduce reuse recycle!

Per the Organization tab we represent the Grey Order and that is it. The Grey Order does not pay us (because they are cheap like that :V ) . In fact we just got out of paying them money.

I interpreted that as a concession the Bretonnians were willing to give us if we located the waystone project there.

Honestly, the entire pitch to me sounded like they they were trying to hide how desperate they were for our help.

Hugo Bann is not a higher priority than getting the Light Collage to back the project.
I know, that's why I'm not recruiting the light college when the coin is already busy on the jades and instead recruiting the less important Hugo this way maximises our chances of getting the lights/minimises the cost.

I'd really have preferred if we got started on Windherder but this is fine too I guess.
Ya know what, why not:
[x] Plan: Slow and Steady with windherding.
-[x] MAX: Use kitting out his workshop as a pretext to get to know House Miriel and the local Cult of Vaul
-[x] EGRIMM: Attempt a Windherder enchantment with Egrimm (Dazzling Brightness/Bewilder)
-[x] JOHANN: Train with and study the freshly-attached golden arm
-[x] Furnish the research spaces of the Waystone Project HQ (specify how much: 2000gc for Laurelorn-grade)
-[x] Attempt to bring an organisation into the Waystone Project (The Jade Order)
--[x] The Gambler: Attempt to bring the Jade Order into the Waystone Project
-[x] Investigate how the Vitae reacts with Divine Magic
-[x] EIC: Insert agents into Talabecland administration to start gathering their secrets
-[x] Seek official recognition of Kron-Azril-Ungol as an affiliated library of the Colleges of Magic
-[x] Write a paper: Observations on the Chaos Wastes in the western Great Steppes

And keeping my original plan:

[X] Plan: Slow, Steady And Divinely Empowered Wins The Race
-[X] MAX: Use kitting out his workshop as a pretext to get to know House Miriel and the local Cult of Vaul
-[X] JOHANN: Train with and study the freshly-attached golden arm

-[X] Furnish the research spaces of the Waystone Project HQ (specify how much: 2000gc for Laurelorn-grade)

-[X] SERENITY: Windsoak Mushrooms Book (1/2)

So, what are the advantages of getting headquarters? I don't see any options, really.

Although I like the idea of the Shadow Village.

I'm not voting for anything that doesn't include the house.

Given the nature of the winds, it may very well be both, depending on who is looking.

I think that is going ta bit far. I mean if the sentience of the Winds is in the eye of the beholder than that would mean the same is true of the Gods. Can Ranald be understood and made use of as a aerthyric machine wholly devoid of his own will? I would argue that this is not the case.

I don't really think the Alric situation is in our wheelhouse but it's not as if there's anything more pressing to be done with the EIC.
On the contrary. Mathild is the Grey Lady Magister on the scene here. She's been closely involved with the internal factional conflict of the Lights. She's got direct information (from Egrimm) on how Alric has been escalating in his desperation. If Alric might attempt do to things, ah, not to the benefit of the Empire, Mathilde is likely the only Grey Magister who will investigate.

I was more thinking that the highly adaptable winds may take on a semblance of intelligence around a wizard expecting that intelligence.

Basically looking into a very distorted mirror, the winds influenced by their subconsciousness just enough.

I mean, that aethyric machine is also irrevocably changing you in a way that not even the Gods can do most of the time. Cython themselves said that while Hysh never asked anything of her, he was changed by Hysh more than the most demanding god would ever do.

I don't see why the Winds can't be gods if the Great Maw can count as one.

The good old "why would sapience form a requirement to be a deity". That's always an option too.

Edit: Also why is everyone voting slow and steady? I don't see the appeal.

Maybe, but then you get into the murky waters of 'what measure is an intelligence?'. Does it make plans, does it have wants and desires you did not expect etc...

As far as I can tell the Winds and the Gods change one about the same Divine and Arcane marks respectively, there are just more people marked by the winds overall because they are universal.
