Ok, so take a look at this map:

Once Karak Vlag is reoriented and the Forest Goblins of the Dukhlys Forest are exterminated or pushed out of their territory, a path from Praag to Vlag can be established, removing the Yellow at the top next to High Pass. The Red from the Chaos Dwarves remains.

If the Howling River Princedom plan goes through, that Yellow line running through Mad Dog Pass becomes green. Once operations are fully online, then the Yellow running through leading to Karaz a Karak can be ignored because you can go up the Skull River through Barak Varr and ignore the Forest of Gloom Black Spider Tribe, then the Red line running through the Silver Road can become Green once Mt.Silverspear and maybe Gunbad are restored. Once that's all done my next best guess on what'll happen is that they'll try to turn that Red line in the eastern side of Peak Pass Green.
To be honest, Thorgrim only needs to reactivate one Ancestor Work to restore Peak Pass' security: Karak Kadrin's Third Axe of Grimnir. Not sure how it'd look like, but it sounds like a strong hard point that prevents any unwanted access to Peak Pass.

The Third Axe of Grimnir, lost, and now all have forgotten that once Peak Pass only opened when Karak Kadrin wished it to be open.

Oh, thought the argument was between dwarf and human engineers.
There are no human engineers involved.

It's a Dwarf-Karak backed project utilizing Dwarf expertise and Dwarf Dwarf-power.

Dwarf.

Far as I'm aware, the only humans involved at all are some Stirlanders being paid to dig on the Empire side and the EIC providing logistical support to those work-camps.

This is a big help, thanks. I must have had it the wrong way around in my notes, back when they were a few folders full of inconsistently-named text files instead of a personal wiki.
My google doc that serves as the notes to your quest is 28k words at the moment and I'm not done rereading the quest. I've even skimped on some areas for another reread to track down all the little details. I understand how much work you have to put in to keep track of things very well.

...where is my "horrified awe" reaction?

I was planning to make a comprehensive informational post that people could refer to whenever they forgot something in the quest, but it quickly bloated out of control so I'm just keeping notes at the moment. Current plans are to create separate informational posts for different things that people could refer to. Like a "Report on Stirland" or a "K8P Encyclopedia" or something like that. Of course, those things take a while to make.

Also, for those interested in the College Rolodex, I've added 2 characters to it. "Mr.Grey", who I'm not sure is the same guy as Magister Grey, who was suspected by Mathilde to be a Hand of Algard's and who taught her the very handy tools-free enchantment. And the Gold Perpetual Professor who taught the Waystones lessons and was very uptight about it.

In Karagril, for the first time since he was an apprentice, Thorek Ironbrow drops his hammer on his foot.
I'd like to note that Thorek noticed that something happened when the Waystones came back online. I don't know what he noticed or what conclusions he came to, but I hope it leads to a favorable outcome when we ask his Guild for help.

My confidence in the Runesmiths helping us dropped a little after seeing the update seeing as they're ramping up efforts, but they're slowly ramping up so I'm not sure to what degree the Runesmiths will be involved and how personally involved Thorek would like to be in the Silverspear efforts. Of course I would like him to personally assist us, but that's aiming too high so I'm hoping for at least a Master Runesmith that used to be apprenticed to him. Thorek is a practically minded fellow, so I think he can see the benefit of learning more about Waystones.

No, it was a combination of the Skaven, the Slann deciding to play pool with the continents, and the sudden cutting off of each hold allowing them to be quickly overwhelmed.
I mean, as far as the Dwarfs see it, Skaven and Greenskins bear equal blame. They were both on the frontlines attacking suddenly vulnerable holds.

(They don't know about the whole thing with the Slann and the Skaven device building off each other)

I wonder if the other kings might be able to convince Thorgrim to try one of the other holds instead. It'll likely be a while before there's enough dwarfs interested in settling a new hold so we can expect there the kings to have plenty of time to try.

There's Varn, Ungor, and Drazh to consider.

Ungor (Red Eye Mountain) has the benefit of being near Kislev so can likely draw a lot of support from there, especially since they're probably riding high with the return of Vlag and the defense of Kislev by the expedition. In addition it's also near the Empire so it's easier to draw support from them as well, helped by all the friendship going on with the canals and such.

There's also a Karak Raziak on the map nearby, although I don't know if that's canon for this quest.

Karak Varn also seems like an interesting choice since it's also close to allies. Unfortunately it's also apparently something of a toxic waste dump filled with warpstone and no one wants to live there, on the other hand there's also gromril.

Karak Drazh is K8P's neighboring hold. This was quite the large and wealthy hold and will remain a constant threat to K8P (and food source to K8P's spiders) for the foreseeable future.

Silver Spear to the east of Karaz-a-Karak. It has the advantage of the Eyes of Grimnir but it's probably going to be fairly difficult to find non-dwarf support from allies.

There's also others such as Gunbad (near Karaz-a-Karak and Silverspear).
Karag Dron a.k.a thunder mountain (North-East of K8P).
Azgal is south of K8P. It's also had it's ruins settled by the dwarf town of Deadgate.
Silver pinnacle (near Ungor) controlled by Lahmian vampires. Definitely a hard target
Ekrund (talk about an awkward spot!)

I think the Watchtower clans are actually for Mad Dog Pass.

They're mentioned in the same sentence:
So in the coming years, mercenary forces from Barak Varr will work to secure the western approach to Mad Dog Pass, while Watchtower-Clans who have been living in the Grey Mountains for millennia will re-establish themselves in their ancient homes with every assistance from Karaz-a-Karak. And when sufficient forces have been gathered, I will personally lead an attack to retake Mount Silverspear and return it to the control of Clan Gunnisson.
And 8th edition Dwarfs has a timeline passage saying that the watchtowers of Mad Dog Pass were taken over by Night Goblins.

so, I don't know how long BoneyM will decide a dwarven generation will be but I think it'll be longer than ten years. The things that are actually going to be happening now are the clearing of Mad Dog Pass and the resettling of the Watchtower Clans.

Mad Dog Pass does not have a Karak on it, but it did at one point have Watchtower Clans. It's possible that there are other passes such as High Pass that are regaining their Watchtower Clans, but Mad Dog Pass is the one that has no Karak to directly reclaim, but many Watchtowers instead.

It would make sense for this to be a showcase and proving ground of the reclamation tactics used by Belegar alongside Umdumgi and other allies. These aren't whole Karaks, but then again Belegar won back Eight Peaks one peak at a time. Smaller objectives, managed largely by the information gathered by the constant use of Rangers and their unconventional tactics. So again will there need to be short goal after short goal, Watchtower by Watchtower, information feeding back to the head often and allowing them to make new decisions faster. If we were Loremaster or Border Princess, this is what we would be doing. The refining and sharpening of Dwarven Steel alongside some of the best Humanity (and halfings!) have to offer.

I think this is brilliant on Thorgrim's part. It gives those of the young holds and unconventional tactics the opportunity to better prove themselves to old grumblers, as well as an opportunity for the Undumgi and other allies of the dwarves to prove themselves as well. Not only that, but the unconventional tactics of the Rangers will be key in the draining of the path which Grungni's Eyes watch over, prior to the march of the full Throngs.

The conventional forces will need to be rallied by the conventional way, but the unconventional are already mustered and moving (of their own accord) to help secure Mad Dog Pass. Give them Karaz-A-Karak funding and veteran Grey Mountain Watchtower clan members and there should be a solid chain of reclamations. The morale will increase alongside the training of the unconventional forces as well as the proving of the unconventional as well as the raw tactical benefit of having Mad Dog Pass secured by Dawi troops for the first time in an age compounding the morale boost. Phew. It's an excellent way to snowball up a time of reclamation. Hot damn. Big fan of this plan, 10/10
