I wouldn't dismiss Bretonnia, Bretonnia has 'superhumans'. Athel Loren alone probably could have heavily reduced the greenskins. Bretonnia and Athel Loren working together would likely at least have the potential to win against the Quiet Whaagh.
Issue is, by the account of magnus himself, enough greenskins died to the mines alone to overwhelm entire provinces.

And that explicitly didn't even dent their number.

bretonnia got fucked up by a single orc lead waagh that saw three of their dukedoms devastated, a waagh lead by an ork, in my estimate, not even on the level of one of the four big orks at karaz a karak.

A Waagh that didn't have armored slave giants, a full waagh of ninja orks, a massive siege train of chaos cannons, dreadquake mortars and whatever else the orks have in resserve.

And i'd be surprised if the pillagers waagh was even a tenth of the size of this waagh.

Bretonnia as a whole would be a speed bumb.

You are right, i didn't consider athel loren. With their time fuckery, athel loren is the third place in the old world that may be able to hold of the silent waagh.

Meanwhile the empire? With the northern armies weakened thanks to the druchi? No shot. The kind of siege weapons the orks have would obliterate any defences of any settlement not named talabheim or middenheim.

Artillery lesser than dreadquake mortars cracked the walls of kislev and praag.

And magnus himself said all the armies he brought along would have been stomped by the orks without archieving much.

For malagors beasttide, to many unkkowns, but if they are comparable to this waagh, then the empire is fucked, so i doubt it.

For tilea, i had already aknowledged skavenblight as able to stop this.

Bretonnia eventually got it's shit together. And once it did, it managed to do stuff against the greenskin that wrecked three dukedoms. Not the best showing yeah, but Bretonnia can put up a fight. They just take time to do that in this quest. The growing Quiet Whaagh has been a growing problem for years, surely Bretonnia didn't wait for the absolute last second to do anything to prepare for it affecting themselves.

For the empire, there's always the militias, and walls, and multiple targets. Mostly depends on the losses the Quiet Whaagh gets in Black Fire Pass.

Eh, I said stall this. Skavenblight is still but one city-state. I expect the skaven to get destroyed, or run away immediately.

Technically no, Nehekhara is not part of the Old World, but it's close enough that it's easier to just say yes it's part of the Old World.

Not really dice dependent, there's likely a element of dice rolling involved, but hitting Karaz-a-Karak is part of a plan. How deep the planning goes? I dunno. Karaz-a-Karak is tough, which means it should not fall in one year. Whereas as noted already any other target is likely to get steam-rolled over, with very few groups expected to hold up against the Quiet Whaagh for at minimum a year. Even among the dwarf holds, most dwarf holds would be expected to fall fast.

If the plan is deeper than strike Karaz-a-Karak because it's strong, that would be strategy. On one side is the Quiet Whaagh, on another side is The Mystery Warboss Whaaagh. Between these Whaaaghs is the Chaos Dwarfs, and Ogres. Hitting Karaz-a-Karak has to be part of a strategy.

Badger Rider
The ways of the Badger Riders are obscure. Any Mootland Halfling wishing to become a Badger Rider must convince the GM that Badger Riders are in fact, real. In addition, they must attempt to replicate their Badger's terrifying war cry for the benefit of their fellow players.

Great news, everyone! About a month and a half ago, the (almost) impeccably proofread Taverns of the Old World PDF came out for WFRP 4e. It's a resource for helping GMs make taverns for their games, and among the information it provides is a bunch of different kinds of alcohol! @torroar this, I believe, would be a 4e thing compatible with the quest.

Got some Mercs for review. got a tad wonky

1.Ms and Mr Jagerhoff [Race Human][origin Wissenland][Description: Story ro Ludvig and Evelyn is one of love not acepted yet preserving. A fifth child of minor noble, overseeing much of region wild lands and a Amber wizard much disliked in her own broderhood. They 'hired her to seek out places of intress, he sought them out to avoid his relatived. Time passed, family bonds grew distant, replaced with that of lovers. When he declared to them his wish to marry her, he was disowned. Toghether they went south and were not heard of for years. They only returned to noble manor to say goodbys properly and leave 'parting gift of their mounts egg, sworn to never return again. Recently they simply traveled wilds of the empire. Now they wish for a place to call their own. Fact that their mount are a pair means any place they call nest will be protected. [Numbers: 1 mating pair of adult hippogriphons, 1 senior Amber journywoman Evelin Jagerhoof nee Bareclaw, 1 ex-noble elite marksmen Ludvig jagerhoof, 1 brood worth of hippogryphin eggs] [Note: price for permanent retainer includes noble title, some hunting grounds and permishion to establish an Aviary].

2. Bastard of 1000 nights. [Race Humans][OriginAraby][Description: Ruhal Murabi is a bastard child of Arabian seductress and a Questing knight that she enraptured for a night he held no recollection of. Raised in hopes of becoming a warlord of some renown for his mother sake, many plans had to adjusted. Learning tactics and combat in amounts unavailable for average warlord he grow to be somewhat respected in region, despite deserving much more. However duo to political and 'family reasons' he may no longer remain in territories of Araby, especially after what happen to isle of sorcery. Whom he gathered to his side in his exile was not however any regular mercenary force but prospects from broken homes, bastards like him, blessed by bloodline in a better world. [Numbers: 750 irregularly armed hedge knights infantry and cavalry. 1 Arabian djinn sworn to aid them for some years yet. 200 ex-slave soldiers 45 'equipment specialists' 1 one Arabian once warlord Ruhal Murabi.]

3. Battle Hogs [Race Ogres][origin Wessenland/Ostland][Description: Ogre find no shortage of work in Westerland, albeit usually mostly in city of Mairienburg. It is perhaps unusual then that so many of them had banded together to march into mountains to the south. The change as it is, was caused by an arrival of a specific Ogre with big dreams. Said ogre was one of many bastard sons of famous Sir Urgdug Greatbellow of many names, seeking to earn his great name away from his father shadow. After ending up in Mareinburg with some of his boys from back home that stick with him over his father, who admittedly aided him with military surplus equipment/outdated gear, to get him out. After some contemplation while getting to know the locals a conundrum was reached. There are Orcs in the area the rides giant boars… could they carry a Ogre the same way. So a goal was set, and after grabbing some priests of Taal and a single amber wizard they mistook for one along. Into the mountains they went. Hogs are still hard to work with but they understand the different between being a mount and being a snack, after enough demonstrations, mayby. [Numbers: 50 ogers in ¾ platemail, 10 thunderbringer, 50 greatbows, 25 spearogers with shields, 15 ogers riding greatboars, 40 currently unrideable bigboars, 4 priests of Taal curiuos to see this play out, 1 thoroughly confused Amber wizard, 1 Ekber greenslappa boarboss Bigbellow The Significant riding an absolutely enormous unit of a boar(like seriously, it's like elephant sized) named Hubs the gorerender orkstompa

4.Fury Bianka and fellowship aka One Pissed of Fury [Race Humans, few haflings and a singular dwarf] [Origin Tilea][description: A single fury and those who follow her on enjoying a fieldtrip. She says she's helping around faithful of her goddess and is spreading her wings into the area. Questioning her fellowship however lead to believe that simply her fellow faithful want her away for the time being, might have something to do with her temper, like taking a break from juggling the hot potato she is by assigning her to church in Imperium, who already rent out her presence.[ Numbers 200 pike and shot, 100archers, 100 close various melee fighters, 122 Tilean 'adventures of various … everything. 1 Very, Veeeeeeeeeery pised Fury Bianca Fingerbite (nickname, more fitting anyway).]

There's still different militias, Knightly Orders, and stuff inside the empire right now. The numbers don't look great, but Malagor's beasttide is going to be big, potentially using all the Beastmen in the world to wreck the Empire of Man big. The Southlands have Beastmen, the poles have Beastmen, Malagor can pull up the Beastmen of the Old World and beyond. The big benefit about this is possibly that the Beastmen don't have the greenskin ability of getting more powerful with every fight survived, and every fight they participate in. The real question is possibly if the Beastmen are calling in Beastmen from the Far East too.
Well, the entry sort of speaks for itself, doesn't it? They're Beastmen.

"At what point the ape ends and the Beastman begins is never clear, and the uncertainty of whether a creature is staring back at the traveler with animal curiosity or savage Chaos-bred malice makes the jungles even more treacherous and disconcerting."

There are species of apes, which means that there are more than one kind. The kind that are organized and intelligent use their tools and weapons...to attack the other inhabitants of the jungles. The difference being that regular apes are just apes, who look at some with animal curiosity, or perhaps even animal aggression if threatened, but the second kind with the Chaos-bred malice are the Apemen proper.
Southlands have Beastmen thing.

What, no elven wine?
That list is for GMs wanting to create a tavern in the WHFB-TTRPG. You generally are served the drinks at a Tavern. In ofher words, they need to make a profit on the wine.

And Elven Wine? Elven Wine is the sort of Drink that is unbelievably expensive in the Empire as it must undergo a very complicated process to arrive at any establishment.

First it needs to be made by the Elves. This already puts the price at a high floor because this mandates moving it over seas. Then you must either ship it to the one city in Ulthann that humans may visit or an elf directly ships it to a human port...which is BTW likely Marienburg when it comes to Imperial destinations. Oh, and the human merchant is going to likely head to Marienburg. So now you have the wine in Marienburg, but not the Empire. The wine having been sold and bought a few times now costs a lot more...and the empire immediately demands you pay a hefty tariff to import it to the Empire. This is to say the price is already insane right then and there. And thats before considering that there might be provincal tariffs. Or the fact that Marienburg in canon has a near monopoly on trade with Ulthann to the Empire since unlike this quest, Ostland isnt a growing powerhouse. Elven Wine is likely to be so expensive that if you can afford it, you arent staying at a Tavern. You have the sort of wealth and status that allows you to justify staying at the estate of the rich and powerful on the grounds of visiting your fellow peers.

Now lets compare this to Dawi Drink. The Dawi must first make it. Then it must make its way to...the Empire that it flanks on two sides that also has a massive grain trade with the Dawi that can be used to help fuel the production of Beer and Ale. Due to this, it is literally impossible to monopolize the Dawi Drink Trade. This means its faster to ship, cheaper to make, and the greater competition lowers prices. Its just simply easier to get Dawi Drink in canon.

Interestingly, in Quest Canon, by that time it might actually be more common to store Elven Wine. The growth of the Trident means that there is now several growing port cities in the north that compete for that trade with Marienburg. Giving more options for sellers of Elven Wine to find buyers.

The growth of the Trident means that there is now several growing port cities in the north that compete for that trade with Marienburg.
Not surprising really, Sakaltan and Nordland's main port are two what the others are is unknown to me unless they are either not named in quest or are hidden in the thread somewhere. Frederick does have those Elven Apple Orchards now so if it hasn't happened by now, Alcohol drinks made from them are probably starting to appear on the markets.

In addition, in quest canon, Laurelorn (which unlike Ulthuan is right there) is beginning trade with the empire, so that's a local, as it were, source of elven wine.

One that might (or at least theoretically could be) get monopolised by Nordland and Ostland. Could have an interesting sales pitch. "Elven wine sourced from (sort of) within the Empire's borders!"

Ohhh I can immediately see a potential political crisis here!

"The time: unknown
The setting: A high-ranking meeting with members/representatives of the Trident and representatives/merchants of Ulthuan and Laurelorn respectively.

The Ulthuani "ambassador" (probably from Caledor because of course he/she is) has subtly insulted and disparages the "Colonists" and their lack of civilization, pitying their "fumbling in the dark like lost children" without the guidance of brilliant Ulthuan and so on and on and on while the Laurelorn "ambassador" can't make a scene of it because if the diplomatic nature.

Que the Ulthuani wine is brought forward by the Ulthuan as the pinnacle of the evening and who, while they all sip, it continues to monologue about the perfection that is Ulthuani winemaking only for the Trident representative lean over to his secretary and whispers (quite drunk but faking not knowing that his peers are able to hear him)
"Make sure to get hold of every cask of Asur wine you can get, the Ulthuani wine will sell because of Exclusiveity but the Eonir wine will sell because of its Greater Quality"

This attempt of gaining favour with the mutch closer elves of Laurelorn was successful but also the start of a minor diplomatic crisis with Ulthuan."

Not quite. Remember, this is 4th ed RPG and Laurelorn in it is not an Asrai offshoot but an independent elven state which could be tapped for trade directly.
Laurelorn is in canon also a state that is in a constant de facto border war with Nordland and to a degree the rest of the Empire and Marienburg, even if one that is much less hot due to much greater difficulty in reaching them from those directions. That de facto makes trading with them trading with an enemy to Nordland, who possess the best access to trade with them. Worse, the feeling is mutual. I expect Laurelorn Wine in 4e to be even more expensive as a result. One only admited to being possessed in the company of close friends. So a drink for Kar Franz, Electors, and their most important vassals. Not Tavern goers.

I think I get the idea of what you're getting at, but you seem to have made a mistake here. Asur and Ulthuani are the same thing. One was probably meant to say Eonir (or Laurelorn) instead.

Southlands have Beastmen thing.
It appears to be a huge fighting force and considering how both the black arcs and greenskins both had plans to get through the walls of their respective targets it's safe to say the beast men have a plan to do so as well, if every beastmen war band has access to large siege monsters or worse some demonic support from the 4 we could see the empire of man fall in matter of weeks if not days if they pull the timing off perfectly. but that also depends if malagor is gonna spread his forces out or make one giant warband and smash each county utterly one at a time

how ever if they get bogged down and fail to blitz us quickly thats alot of bodies to feed esecially if he is using gorgans their immense strengh of numbers could be their undoing i know in omakes they have access to glut of food but they can't take that with when campainging though that will mean the forests farmlands and villages will be striped bare as beastmen eat anything they can even with a victory the recovery for the empire from this calmaity is going to take a century unless the jade college can magick up a soulution

True. My point was mostly to correct the slight misconception that Ulthuan was the only possible source of elven wine in the empire, not that it wasn't rare and expensive.

[CANON] The Hohenzollern Flight - AllenWalker
The Hohenzollern Flight

Magnus von Hohenzollern was many things. A famous general of Ostland, a friend of dwarfs, a feared opponent of goblins, beastmen, fimir, skaven and manifold other horrors of the darkness alight.

He had killed great monsters and champions alike - sometimes a mix of both in case of Karak Ungor - and was even more than that the heir to one of the great provinces of the empire, Ostland.

Beating heart of the Northern trident and a rising power that possessed plenty of friend and foe alike.

For all intents and purposes, he was a future King in all but name.

But today, tonight he was none of these things.

The night was cold, the night sky clear in a way it seldom was.

He was no astromancer, but even he could appreciate the sight of a thousand thousand stars that were shining in the black of the sky and even more than that, he loved to see the reactions of his children.

Perfect for what he had in mind.

He was dressed warmly in his thick cloak, more than what was strictly necessary for the evening chill. Nonetheless he bustled through the preparations, the last set of what was needed for his plan.

Unusually however, his only weapon was a small dagger, just so he could cut some straps. Brain Wounder was left in its sheath in his quarters, he didn't need it tonight.

He had to admit, wearing it still felt…. Wrong in a sense. Not nearly as badly as it had at first, and with every day he wielded it, sparred with it and fought some beastman in the Hohenzollern forest with it, he was reminded of what duty awaited him in the future.

He still did not think himself ready, even if he had advanced far from the foolish youth dreaming of foolish glory outside the gates of karak ungor.

Sigmar willing that he´d live to become Elector Count of course.

But those thoughts were for another day.

Once he was finished Magnus bustled to the stables, hearing a commotion inside. Nothing that sounded violent, thus he relaxed a small amount. Pushing the door into the well lit stables, he walked to the large section set aside for Oskana, with all the reinforcements needed to hold a gryphon, and currently the center of a lot of activity.

Rounding the corner, Magnus first saw Urgdug's colossal bulk blocking the view. His ogre uncle moved aside before he saw him, turning around to flash a grin.

Oskana was calm tonight, idly chirping and ruffling her feathers. Not completely relaxed, but seeing a mess in the corner showed that a good meal soothed her nerves. A cow was a small price to pay for this special occasion.

She was usually more snappish, but the presence of the kids always calmed her, especially today.

It wasn't easy to get a gryphon to loaf, but if anyone could do it, Wolfila was the one. The little boy was wrapped up tight in cold weather clothes, but right now he was running a brush over Oskana's mane, smoothing out her fur as his sisters watched him from a couple paces away, watching each and every single move both of them made.

The second the gryphon acted with hostility they would step in, assuming Urdug wouldn't get in the way. He was chuckling in that bone rumbling way he did, but his eyes never left the pair. His massive size hid what was still a speedy fighter at his age.

One would say that they were giving what was ultimately still a wild animal too much credit, but Magnus disagreed.

With Wolfila, even the Gryphon, who had fought the very worst the beastmen had to offer, was as calm and soft as a kitten.

She knew her pack and it´s most vulnerable members.

"Who is to the front, who is to the back?" His wonderful wife, Sabine asked, hanging to the side with her arms crossed. It was no secret that she feared the gryphon, but she put up with it to be here. Magnus didn't even need to beg, she agreed on her own accord.

"Front." "Back." Stephanie and Freya said in unison.

"Whatever is most comfortable for Wolfia." Karola said loudly and proudly, beaming at her sibling. Even with a cap her red mane was vibrant in the light, sending a full, warm smile towards the boy.

The last sister did not speak, she just sent a blank look at her. Unlike her siblings Ortrud, Ori as she preferred, had her arms crossed and was staying back, showing little wariness around Oskana but not bothering to help. She yawned, easily capable of hiding it but she didn't try, and unlike them she kept her knife in full view.

"Hmm. Don´t you think it would be best if you sat before and to the back of Wolfia directly and not the whole of Oskana? She is pretty big" - there was an annoyed huff from the Gryphon. Hmmm, ladies, regardless of species apparently didn´t like it when men discussed their 'size'. - "And we do not want him to be lost."

For a moment both hesitated, before both nodded.

"Yay!" Karola jumped into the air with a raised fist, cheering loud enough to wake the dead. Fortunately Oskana didn't seem to mind, all the patting by her favorite humans had her take the display in stride.

Now getting everyone onto Oskana, that was going to be tricky. The weight was no problem, even put together they were still only a little more than a fully armored and armed fighter. But having so many separate people on her back, that could be a problem if he wasn't careful.

Wolfia was hefted first, as the centerpiece of this whole affair he had to be placed correctly. Magnus did the honors, hearing the boy squeal in delight as he picked him up, swinging his little legs over Oskana's mane. All his pats soothed the gryphon, she chirped when his weight settled in.

"Next up." Magnus picked Freya, putting her behind him. She wiggled a bit when she was placed, forgetting to pat the gryphon in her quest to check over Wolfia. Luckily he was on that duty, so while Oskana was perturbed by the load she merely squinted her eye like an actual bird.

Stephanie was put on next, bustling so she had her brother safely secured. Karola was happy with the back, Ori less so although she voiced no complaints. Aloud anyway. Magnus noticed how she reached past Karola to where he would be seated, as if testing the distance. Probably just for safety.

Magnus was the last, and to his quiet dismay Urdug helped. Namely picking him up like he just did to his children, planting him between Karola and Freya, even nudging his shoulder to balance him. He wanted to groan, but that did help a great deal.

"Thanks Urdug. Ready children?" Magnus was met by a round of cheers.

"Stay safe, don't be out too long." Urdug unlocked the gate, allowing Oskana to trot into the evening field.

"Be careful my love. Really." Sabine hesitated then scurried up, catching a touch on his hand before Oskana could take offense.

The gryphon ruffled her feathers, extending her wings to stretch. Magnus held onto the reins, checking the children one more time. That done, Oskana took off in a short sprint, flapping her great wings to blast chilly air at them, and in a leaping bound they were all airborne, taking off into the night sky.

Magnus halted a gasp. Flying was always a wild ride, but tonight it was extra special. As made clear by all the children letting out cries at the same time, not in fear but with excitement. Hands grabbed at his cloak, but from what he saw past Stephanie's hair (he muffled a curse at seeing her cap go flying) she had a massive grin. She, Karola when he briefly twisted around, Freya, and especially Wolfia, all had massive smiles as they gained altitude.

Tonight was a perfect night to fly. Only a handful of clouds dotted the horizon, letting the moon shine on the landscape. The green moon was barely visible in the distance, unless he was looking in that direction he could pretend that it wasn't there this evening.

The cool air whipping past his face was still as exhilarating as the very first time he flew on Oskana, and now? He grinned as the gryphon flapped her wings, taking them higher and higher. So what if his eyes were tearing up? Of course he would deny that it was because of the fast, very cold wind flying into his face.

Wolfia threw his hands up, letting out a loud cheer that echoed in the evening sky.

A cheer that after a moment, the others joined. Stephanie held on despite the straps holding him down, but she was letting out cries of joy just like he was. Even Ori was getting in on it, a raspy laugh leaving her that a cough didn't hide.

"Woohoo!" Karola bellowed to the sky, joined by a squawk from Oskana.

Magnus looked at them, smiled and then also let out loud laughter.

For all the dangers and horrors that were in this world, this only reinforced a thought he long since held.

What a wonderful life.

Tonight, he was not Magnus von Hohenzollern, Prince of Ostland, Heir to the province. Not the son of one of the greatest Elector Counts to ever live, blessed by and cursed by Gods. Not a soldier, a warrior, struggling to comprehend the future where he may stand in the place of those who came before, worrying over what decisions and mistakes he might make.

Magnus was a father, with his wife, with his children.

And right now, in this moment, nothing mattered aside from the fact that he could hear their joy and see the stars and moon shining bright in their eyes.

@torroar wrote a list of stuff he wanted to write scenes on but he no longer had the time to do it?

I'll write omakes on each one of those, while also working on my band of kislev series at the side

For those wondering…
As to omakes and more features of the Herd, I just don't seem to have the time and energy these days. And considering that soon I shall awaken as a pile of decrepit dust upon a clock's turning, here are some that I'd like to say have happened, but I've just not been able to properly write.

  • Frederick and Natasha sitting out on one of the battlements, drinking casually, looking up at a beautiful night sky and discussing the family, and themselves. Discussing the passage of time, getting older, even if they don't really feel like they are as much as they should be. Deciding not to think too hard about it, just spend more time checking out with the priests and wizards as necessary.
  • Magnus and Sabine taking their youngest trio on a flight through the air, below, through, and then above the clouds. Seeing the joy on those faces, even if one of them is somewhat befuddled about it all.
  • Frederick planning out an anniversary celebration for the death of Zacharias, for the family, for all of Wulfenburg, and is doing so alongside help from every part of the family. A semi-equal family feature, with Arthur planning a solemn remembrance ceremony as well as a joyous afterwards to celebrate the dead, Sabine tearing her hair out over how to shift money around, Magnus frustrated again at how his father translates his own talents and abilities into seamless superlative quartermastery, while he has to work at it that much harder but without the bite of bitterness of his earlier years.
  • Urgdug and his wife Cherag discussing ogre politics in Ostland, how their folk are doing compared to the others, schooling at the Greatbellow Academy and how it's changing things, but also remarking on how there are some things that they are just too different in - size, strength, appetites, lifespans, etc. But also finishing on how they still consider themselves Ostlanders first, more than anything else.
  • Serhild and Arthur discussing the horse trade business that Sabine set them up in, meeting with a few Ostland nobles looking to partake of the equines she's assembled already. An amusing side portion featuring some of their younger kids - as well as some of those of Magnus' branch - getting to ride on ponies instead of the larger horses. Magnus and Sabine largely background in favor of their kids, but present.
  • Tasha asserting dominance amongst the rest of the younger Herd, exerting seniority and experience in lighter youth spars, as well as in general. Some children are fine with it, some are not. Karola is upset that the others are listening to Tasha more than her, especially because Tasha is so much more casual with violence and pain - she did grow up largely taught by Frederick, Natasha, and the Engineers as much as the literally emotionally incapable Anna. Ori attempts to correct this, only to lose to Tasha in sparring, while Tasha informs Ori that she can't just do everything that Karola won't, to which Ori is uncomprehending and asks 'why not'. Tasha can't answer her and just helps her up.
