[X][KADESH] Stargazer

1. It's the right thing to do.
2. We need that pp.
3. It's the right thing to do.
4. An Excelsior has the best chance of making it back.
5. Profit (Hopefully)

@OneirosTheWriter, does the explorer we send have to have an EC crew - a crew that's actually trained for a long term exploration mission? Do we get penalties if we don't choose a EC ship? Like we could pick e.g. the Cheron and swap out its crew for an EC one?

You may never see any ship you send again. If you do see them, it won't be for many years. The journey is estimated to be twenty years one way, four years the other, nearly a quintet of Five Year Missions. It will be perilous, the whole expedition possibly the swan song of a species. Submissions from Starfleet Intelligence and the Communications Hub Command are both certain they can keep the lines of communication open, even when the delays stretch out to days at a time. You will get back amazing reports and research data as they explore a near part of the galaxy, but any resources they find will feed the Kadesh instead, and it will likely be years before you can meet any of the species they come across.

Okay, this means we'll likely get PP and RP rewards, but no BR and SR rewards (edit: and colonies), and although first contacts can be made, they definitely will be blocked from affiliate status.

A Centaur or Oberth would be a one-way trip. It would be almost impossible for a sub-megaton ship to return through several thousand lightyears unaided; only an explorer could manage.

Yeah, despite being classified as one, the Oberth is not actually a long-term long-range explorer :sour:

@OneirosTheWriter just for the sake of an argument, would an Explorer on this mission be counted as "on a Five Year Mission" for purposes of meeting Council minimums and bonuses like Sulu's?
Yes

If it doesn't have an explorer corps crew, it's crew will be swapped with the explorer corps crwe that was assigned to the Odyssey.

Okay, I definitely want to send a ship. The question is which one.

I'm hesitant to send an elite (Enterprise) or veteran (Sarek) Excelsior, because we want our very best ships available to help spearhead any crisis response (and continue getting those sweet sweet FYM rewards).

Can we afford send a blooded Excelsior (S'harien and Courageous and Kumari) or do we skimp and send either a green Excelsior (Stargazer) or a blooded* Constitution-A (Cheron).

* although with the upcoming Constitution-A retcon nerf, Cheron would actually be Veteran (and still have the same final stats)

edit: Also all the old talk about sending a fleet with escorts and stuff looks like it's off the table, unless we're fine with them being 1-way missions, can spare the EC crew for them, and can even afford to stretch our fleet even thinner.

As an aside, if you had picked a different new head of Starfleet, that whole passage would have been written very differently!

Oh? Do tell.

I'm sure Lachlan Ablett would be inclined to reject it outright, but little idea on how Heidi Eriksson or Rinias ch'Vohlet would have reacted.

[X][KADESH] Send the Stargazer and overcrew her. Add two extra units of every type of Explorer Corps crew, working to allow them to rotate living on the Pride of Kadesh. There's no replacement for casualties out in space, and it's inevitable that some crew will be lost or want to stay with the Kadesh at trip's end. This will give them the resources to make it home.

That is a lot of political points they offer.

I'm guessing Ablett and ch'Vohlet wouldn't have liked it?

It might not be a matter of their opinion so much as you wouldn't see phrases like:

"A heady brew of childlike awe and goosebump-laden anxiety has gripped the planet's population, and the Federation as a whole. Tens of millions of tons of bulk with nacelles that emit subspace fields that crackle with such power that little teraelectronvolt pockets ripple along the overlaps like a sort of open-air subspace particle accelerator. The Big Bang played out over and again in little pantomimes in the wash of subspace fields."

"That silent siren song of stars afar from home calls to you with dreams of wonders unseen. Deep inside you want to seize the Stargazer from her shakedown runs and sail the interstellar winds with Karen Sarjan. Deep inside, so does every other Starfleet officer. People join Starfleet to see the unknown, to boldly go, to chase the photons of distant aeons across the Milky Way, and beyond one day."

"That you are the shining city on the hill that welcomes all to a better way."

Sousa has a very unique "voice".

[x][KADESH] Pick a ship to send along with the Kadesh: USS Stargazer

With 80 pp and 4 militarization difference between the options the choice whether to send a ship is effectively taken out of our hands.

Overcrewing the Stargazer is a terrible idea, even if it increased the probability of the Stargazer returning in 25 years from 0% to 100% it would still be short of breaking even for reducing the number of active explorers by around 0.16 for 25 years, and I actually expect rotating the crew to live among the Kadeshi part time to reduce the probability of them wanting to return

Changed my vote, we want to maximise probability of mission success. Overcrewing is a good idea towards that.

Not out of mine. It's not out of my hands when someone gives me a reward for what I always wanted to do anyway. :)

But good thinking, @Briefvoice.

A lot of it is the voice, that's definitely true.

That said, Eriksson who comes from Ops and Ablett who comes from Tactical both would have focused their spiel much more heavily on the difficulty in covering another missing Excelsior.

For that matter, I wouldn't have made the rewards quite as rich - this is partly boosted by Sousa's political affinity.

though, why dose if have to be a single ship that takes the entire journey, but Two in sequence?

Stargazer takes the first shift, headding out alongside the expedition. It's prepared to stay there for the long haul, but the plan is for another explorer to come and relive her in 10 years. second explore departs 8 years later, spends two year travling out to relive the stargazer, then the stargazer returns after 12 years away. the replacement travles onward for the final leg of the journey, returning 14 years after that.

I also wonder if we have a disposable freighter that can keep up with the expedition to go along side the stargazer, and if we can load it up with subspace relays to drop ocasionaly along the expeditions route. Establish a Line of communications behind them. atleast for a year or two (or more). freighter would have a crew roated out from the stargazer and stay with them until it can no longer keep going, then scuttled. A line of communications extending outward from our border would be Immensely beneficial, especially for exploration efforts in that general direction.

Plus a hose of other Ideas to maximize early returns for the project. Small things we can tack on. Like say.. sending an Oberith with them for the first 2 years of the journey along with the explorer, which heads back afterwards.
