So, Briefvoice brought up our next shipbuilding plans. It has 2 Excelsiors and another Connie-B. One idea I had, and I'm not sure it's good, is instead to build 2 Oberths (1 after another in the same berth) instead of one Excelsior. We've seen that the Oberth is useful as a garrison in our border zones scanning for cloaked ships and detached for Starfleet Intelligence. They would probably be useful in our Syndicate ops looking for hidden bases in asteroids or wherever they're hidden. We will be getting one more finished in 2312Q1 but would a few more be useful? More useful then 1 more Excelsior? Should we leave off Oberths and start a new science vessel?

One Excelsior is dramatically more useful than two Oberths, which are we should remember, fragile little soap-bubbles that pop when you breath on them too hard.

Ironically, I think Picard would have made a great Admiral. His particular skills are better suited for managing bureaucracies and shmoozing and launching initiatives than for directing a starship.

Depends on the size of the starship. The thousand-crew Galaxies probably required something of a diplomat to keep functioning.

Perhaps. On the other hand, as a man directing a starship he's on point for a huge number of first contacts, negotiations, and the like- and he does quite well at the "starship captain" side of his job, even if he's a bit cranky about it sometimes.

He's better at the whole internal politics thing than Nash is.

Yeah, pretty much. Picard is so good at the game that he can manipulate the system to do whatever he wants it to do.

Anyway, if all of you are feeling so sorry for Commodore ka'Sharren, we ought to give her a nice exciting assignment. What's the most exciting assignment for a commodore? Sector fleet somewhere?

Oooh, we should assign a Commodore to run anti-Syndicate fleet operations now that there's a whole fleet on it.

The Answer is clear.

Assign her back to Enterprise.

Matt Decker was a Commodore after all.

Ok, so Nash doesn't want the "promotion", Kahurangi (IE, we the players) doesn't want to give it, and Sulu can at least understand that line of thinking given that he served with Kirk. How and why is she getting it?

Air quotes because I'm not sure captain of an EC Enterprise to Commodore is actually a promotion in any meaningful sense. Rank up, prestige and importance down.

Director of Operations, explorer command, looks open.

Amarkia sector command would likely be a good symbolic selection.

Amarkia Sector Command would de facto put Nash in charge of half of our anti-Syndicate ops. Sounds good.

Maybe her unlisted ability to give other people Named Character Powers will kick in and boost some of the people she's commanding?

Not to mention that the Enterprise takes a Huge performance dive.

Shipyard Ops - 2311.Q1
2311.Q1

Well, here you are. The start of your last year in office. The final Shipyard Operations meeting.

Another Excelsior is commissioned, this time at Lor'Vela Orbital Construction Facility, their maiden build. Another new Shipyard that you lobbied for and helped bring into existence, seen come up from nothing, to a duranium skeleton, to a finished product. And now commissioning mighty Excelsiors. It's enough to make you feel a little grandmotherly. The sense of accomplishment keeps you warm as you look out into the stars, waiting for the meeting to begin.

That's kind of the point. Nash is hogging one of the most prestigious positions we have available. It's not really about her falling; as an organization we need room for other people to rise. "Captain of the Enterprise" is a big line to slap on your CSV and by handing it out to people we want to see reach higher command we can help them get there.

But not everyone deserves the chair, it sounds like we're taking it from the one who did.

Let's honor one of our biggest heroes, the Explorer of the 23rd century, the man who saved the Federation (along with his crew!) more than once. This one... this one is for Starfleet itself.

So do we let the big K name her last Explorer The USS James T. Kirk as her official sendoff?

Or do we save it for an early Ambassador?

Official Sendoff sounds good to me.

The thing is that Nash is very likely the most the competent Starfleet Captain since Kirk. Kicking her upstairs hurts the organization as a whole.

As for builds and crews?
EC Crew the new excelsior, and 2 Excelsiors and Connie-B to build I guess?

If we can make an Excelsior Explorer Corps, then we should. I'm actually going to stay out of the name debate this time, and I trust Briefvoice on ship building.

There is a reason, to be fair.

Putting people in a prized mid-ranking position like "explorer captain" permanently means that those slots are no longer available to promising individuals rising through the ranks. Look at it from the point of view of all the lieutenant commanders and commanders in Starfleet- can any of them aspire to command the Enterprise as long as Nash is in the chair? Nash is only about forty; she could easily last another 20-30 years before retirement, assuming nothing blows her up first. Normally we'd expect four or five people to cycle through that captain's chair in that span of time. But as long as she's in it, that particular spot is closed- and as much to the point, that rung on the ladder to higher rank is barred to them.

There are other explorers, of course- but it does act to create a blockage in the flow of Starfleet officers upwards towards flag rank.

I mean, just to pick people who are "real" to us because we've seen them in omakes: would you say that this particular spot is barred to Mrr'shan? Or Leaniss? Or how about some of our more promising junior officers who will be reaching captain's rank in

Remember Kaylee Straite, that awesome sensor officer on the Sarek? The one who tracked the Kadak-Tor through like six ion storms? Who, in the Strangelove scenario, would probably have been the person solely responsible for saving a whole planet by keeping track of the stealth cruiser's movements?

If she shows up as a candidate for the captain's list in five or ten years, and Nash is still on Enterprise, we may be in the position of saying "so sorry, you can't get an Explorer Corps command in the next cycle, because all our explorers are full!"

But not everyone deserves the chair, it sounds like we're taking it from the one who did.
Thing is, there are very plainly people who do. Nash may well be the Federation's most talented single ship captain, but she is very far from its only good one. And she's certainly not the only very good one out of the pool of all officers who have made or will make the rank of captain in the next two to three decades.

It's not a one-sided argument, and if Nash decides to militantly dodge promotion I just may vote to keep bumping her back to Enterprise. I mean, I have a soul and all.

But there are good reasons NOT to endlessly keep the same person in the same role forever.

Ten years is a long time. We count a 5YM as a season, but honestly, it's far, far longer than that. We also get quarterly captain's logs, but a lot more happens than we see. Ten years is forever compared to what we're shown in quest.

I think it's time for her to move on.

New explorer corps ship - maybe we should try to name this one something Caitian?

Nash has more than earned a permanent place as Enterprise's captain so long as she wants it IMO.

There are plenty of Explorer Corps ships around for other talented captains, let our best keep her seat and keep up the good work.

mechanically it doesn't. her bonus is +1 to crew rating, however I don't think that lets her buff it above the max level, and it's been maxed out for some time. Besides, she probably has a rather strong bonus for wherever we put her next.
