I am trying to figure out a way to forestall a Romulan/Klingon throwdown

Or at least make the Romulans win! > : V
Not being Stuck In on the Orions would be a good first step-they probably think it's an ideal time for them to have a scrap while we're busy and you might even want to include that in some of your future Omakes.

If you like, though right now there's effectively no difference other than combining the Sol and Betazed fleets. It'll only matter in the future.

Or at least make the Romulans win! > : V

Ironically, that may not be a bad option long-term. In terms of this quest the Klingons have been the dogs that have not barked, but the Romulans aren't the nation uncomfortable with being at peace either.

The real problem is neither nation seems to have realized that the likely outcome of actual victory is that the loser probably becomes a protectorate of the Federation. Now you just fought a war so you could forestall the Federation from being ahead of you, they're ahead of you anyways, and a bunch of their people are angry at you.

It sounds like they're both gambling hard on making large gains. Such is often the calculus in wars. If one of them is right, then yes, they'll accomplish some of what they wanted.

But if they're wrong, a stalemate will only have them mired spending resources on fighting while the Federation grows stronger.

>Bajor on the cusp
Hmmm, damn. Should we risk trying to sway them to our side while Cardassia is focused inwards?

This is a big part of why they haven't yet pulled the trigger, both sides are trying to goad the other into a misstep while also banking on different ship development projects completing and paying dividends.

So, the main reason for their conflict is due to both the Romulans and the Klingons being afraid of the rapidly expanding and strengthening Federation? They are worried that they are unlikely to be able to keep up with our current growth, and eventually we will reach the point that our size would make assimilating them into the Federation a legitimate possibility. I wonder if it is possible to direct said fear into wishing to avoid conflict rather than going into conflict?

We don't want them to bank on fear of us. That kind of thinking will lead to them gunning for us, either separately or worse, together. We want to smother them in kindness. Slowly, ever so slowly, convince them there will never be a need to be as strong as the Federation.

Now may be a good time to negotiate expansions of the KBZ and RPZ, just to keep us in mind as people who talk, so if they do hit a point of wanting to negotiate, we are mediators, and to remind them that they also have expansion directions that are not us or each other.

If they have long running issues, they need to be the ones willing to resolve them, we can only help.

Can they not have an alliance with each other to deal with us?

Seems more practical.

You know how there's this chant about denying the Cardassians resources and affiliates? The Romulans and Klingons want to be strong enough so that we don't dare talk that way about them. That's not something you can get from alliance, because they're competing over the same resources and affiliates in the Beta Quadrant.

This is a big part of why they haven't yet pulled the trigger, both sides are trying to goad the other into a misstep while also banking on different ship development projects completing and paying dividends.

What's funny is that the Federation is doing pretty much the same thing. How many times has someone in this thread said something along the lines of, "We'll be much safer once that wave of Connie-Bs comes out... and safer still once we get Renaissances?" I imagine their intelligence reports on the Federation talk about our cruiser development projects just that way.

I'm kind of thinking that we need to work up a rotating series of briefings on our neighboring powers to try and keep our knowledge semi current.
Then we can take the unassigned slots and throw those at the current or expected problem.

I think we should push on Bajor and Gretarians next snakepit, Bajor since they are not affiliates of Cardassia yet and Gretarians to break them free of tribute to Syndraxians which will in turn deny them resources to limit their shipbuilding. Beyond that Kadesh and Yrillians I guess. Hopefully the Cardassians keep internal focused for a couple more years at least.

How did the Klingons and Romulan keep up with the Federation in canon?

The Romulans went into isolation after the TOmed incident where the Federation seems to have humiliated them. And the Klingons were getting stuck in with the Cardassians right about now.

We could make a direct statement that we will intervene to forestall a Klingon/Romulan war. The problem is we might have to back it up, and it needs to hard to manipulate...

Perhaps an intervention on the first side to lose a planet? Something like that?

No, make it so that if they come into conflict, we would come in to prevent civilian casualties, and become somewhat of a pain in both their asses, kind of like the UN is.

Is it within our remit, given that we are at war with the Sydaxians, to take the wave of ConnieBs out with an Excelsior and cut the Sydaxians down to size? Maybe free the Graetarians if they are willing? Or would we be required to have the Council authorize this?
