the Vulcan whose cradle was accidentally swapped with a torpedo at birth, T'Rinta
That's a new nickname for the Torpedo Fairy!

So I would like to get involved with this but with near 3000 pages I really need an explanation of what's going on in the quest. Could someone explain what's going on?

Space lesbians are flying around being awesome.
It's a Star Trek quest where we play as the admiral of Starfleet. Also, a somewhat disproportionate number of our officers are lesbians, probably because of omake writers.

Currently, we're having this pocket war thing with the Cardassians, the Romulans and the Klingons are at war with each other (and both in non-aggression pacts with us), we had to take out some old remnants of the Orion Empire, there's two OC major powers to contend with (one is paranoid but fairly harmless, one is creepy and manipulative), and of course there's a shitload of other species, with whom our relationships are varied.

More seriously now.

This is actually a pretty good place to jump aboard the quest. The last major threat (an ancient Orion army that awoke from hidden stasis tombs) was just defeated. The Federation is just getting finished with absorbing the last of its current waiting list of prospective members. The on again off again war with the Cardassians and their subject races is currently off. The Federation's two historic rivals, the Klingons and Romulans, are busy fighting each other.

This is a downtime period, and a perfect time to join the quest before the next major adventure begins.

She's being silly.

Not entirely wrong, mind you, but silly.

Essentially the thread takes the place of the Commander in Chief of Starfleet from 2300 on. Over the course of four quarters each year the quest cycles through a number of chances to set Starfleet policy and doctrine, the results of which play out over the course of the game (Research, ship building, espionage, diplomacy, politicking, etc)

The heart of the quest are the Quarterly Captain's Logs which show not only the results of your choice in the field but also Starfleet being awesome with a cast of characters that shift and change assignments as the years go by. Each set of logs per ship essentially is an episode of Star Trek (though admittedly some are more gripping than others)

To Boldly Go... deftly combines Star Trek values, exciting narrative, deep spreadsheet interactions, and waifu wars for a unique and satisfying Trek experiance for whichever part that you want to engage with.

And as Leila pointed out, It also has space lesbians, yes. Though actually not an Out of proportion number, it's just that Captain Nash Ka'Sharren, the Andorian woman who commanded Enterprise for the first 10 years of the quest was a Kirk like larger than life figure with a similar if greater seduction count than ol' Jim Kirk.

Edit: wait did I miss the point and they merely wanted a current events brief? Ooops.

No that's a perfectly fine explanation

Just keep in mind the key principles:
This is not an Empire quest
You are the Admiral of Starfleet (currently Admiral Sulu, third to hold the position during the quest, and due to retire at the end of this year), so you still serve the President and Council and have to trust your subordinates
Be Trekky, get your inner Gene Roddenberry on.

Don't go mirror universe and turn into a dictatorship. Got it.
