I also find it a bit sad that their new-ship compares so poorly to the Ambassador designs since it robs them a bit of their specialised/gimmicky nature though that has probably a lot more to do with how our research works than anything on their side...

There's also the fact that they just took part in a major war, and have been nervous about the Licori and Ked-Paddah for at least a couple of years before that. The tech-explorer might be more of a warship than they'd normally build for this reason.

Ah, I remembered an all 8 for everything but hull, still that is even better stat line. And wow can you imagine each of our major member worlds building one of those along with the ones we build?

It is expensive as hell, remember :V

We could do an all 8s with H5 ship, but the cost savings are not that significant even if you squeeze it down to a 2400kt hull. Like, my design is 6/7/6 crewing, 300br, 250sr. SWB's is 8/8/6 240sr but builds faster. The all8s is 6/6/5 crewing, 250br 210sr. +1S/P/L and +2H is a massive boost to survivability and enhances combat ability against shield pen. For what's basically+1 E&T and 40sr, IMO it's worth it to help an EC Amby squeak past a Hard DC event.

Leila's right. We don't know a whole lot about them, period. Oneiros could probably triple or quadruple our knowledge base on the Qloathi with a thousand words.

Does anyone know, one way or the other, if there are personnel stationed in the nacelles of a Starfleet ship during normal operations?

Absolute no. In fact, personnel aren't usually inside the nacelles unless the ship is in dock and unpowered; they're a pretty hostile environment even when not at warp, not something normal equipment (much less people) can cope with.

Not unless someone really really really hates the personnel in question, no. Last guy in-quest who got that close to kiloCochrane field generators ended up as relativistic chunky salsa.

It would be interesting to see the Caldonians done as a direct contrast to the Gaeni. How does another science-focused species but without the research institute angle do things differently?

From what we know, the Caldonians have a pretty standard representative democracy, but with a strong bias in favor of scientists when it comes to attracting voters.

My headcanon so far is that the caldonians are all about maximizing results. They determined that the scientific method is the best way of getting results, so scientists came to dominate the important positions in their society.

Also, in the one TNG episode they appeared in, they were huge. Like, Yrillian sized. Its easy to forget that.
