Maybe the exploration ships could be sent in pairs?

At worst they've lost shields and a sliver of hull so far. Even Captain Vulcan man's run ins with pew! pew! pew!, have all followed on from the same encounter.

I mean, if we're feeling saucy we could dump an Oberth or a Miranda or something on them as an escourt quest? > : V

Nah, we need escorts elsewhere, especially with the situation at the Neutral Zone(even if it's not the Romulkans, better to be safe than sorry). Plus, the Oberths can be better used as follow-on craft that run in-depth examinations of the various finds the explorers make-like for example, I'd like to get an Oberth to do a long-term study of the crystals we just found, so we know their exact effects, as well as in-depth planning for their extraction and a basic planning on the mining colony.

"Greetings from the United Federations of Planets! I'm Nash ka'Sharren, Captain of the illustrious, graceful, and renowned USS Enterprise -- and this is my colleague, Commander Nobody, Captain of the USS Needs To Be Babysat, renowned for sticking his fingers into electrical sockets."

"That is not the name of my ship nor do I do any such thing!"

This captain deserves a medal for Uncommon Sense.
You have to love when characters hear about the walls breathing and the flesh becoming one and sensibly go, "You know what, Commander Trenno? No. Nope. Not today."

The exploration cruisers are super tanky.

I mean, I honestly think we should build on our strengths and go into shields research and make them more tanky. Looking at the combat logs, the real killer for the Space Kraken Cultists was their loss of combat efficiency if they weren't popped outright

We've been told that once the Oberths are built, there will be options to pick missions for them. Unfortunately they won't be done until 2304 even if we start them as soon as possible. (Which will make the Council happy; they like to see a commitment to science.)

Actually, we should talk Construction. 2302 five slots open in our shipyards. Pretty sure we're going to dothe Excelisor and at least two Oberts to meet our Council goals for # of Oberths. @Keeper Of Storms suggests we do a third Oberth to hit our science goals.:
- Excelsior
- Oberth
- Oberth
- (Oberth?)
- ?

One slot left. So.... I think the choice really comes down to a Constellation or a Centaur (or ta Miranda I guess). Stats reproduced below for your convenience.

Constellation 2284-2370 [310m 700k t]
C3 S2 H2 L2 P2 D3
Cost [70br, 40sr, 3 years], Crew [O-2, E-4, T-2]

Miranda 2280-Now [277m, 655k t]
C3 S1 H1 L2 P1 D2
Cost[60br, 40sr, 2 years], Crew [O-1, E-2, T-1]

Centaur 2290-Now [315m 800k t]
C3 S2 H2 L2 P2 D2
Cost[80br, 60sr, 2 years], Crew [O-1, E-2, T-2]

The Centaur is more expensive and adds less Defense, but takes less time to construct and demands far less crew. And anyway, we don't even have one Centaur in our fleet right now. Let's start replacing those Soyuz with Centaurs.

Okay, question for the thread!

Would you prefer that I make a demonstration Research Turn (the last act of the retiring head of the Ship Design Bureau, Rear Admiral T'Laur) and use the current RP stockpile to show how the system works so there is an easy reference in place for next time ... or just skip it and keep the RP for 2302.3 when you have control and you just end up with Yes research points to play with that turn, and I just forge on to post up Quarter 4's events?

That would be a good idea, if you can tell us what priorities he would do. I'd say if he moves in the direction of replacing the Constellation(seriously, our latest ESCORTS are just as good, if not better than that POS) yes, otherwise we'd likely want to hold the RP

Yes.

Yes please do it.

Captain's Log, Supplemental, USS Challorn, Stardate 20718.1

Upon arriving in orbit over Ulith III we have discovered that the scientists are missing. No lifesigns can be found on the planet's surface.

Commander Mbeki has managed to ungarble the final transmission of the ill-fated science colony. It is as follows...

"It's in the walls, it's in the walls... it ... it feeds. We are forsaken. Flee this place."

I have not sent an away team down to the surface.

This person deserves a raise.

Hit an 11 on 2d6 for his Science Test, I figured he wasn't going to be sticking any forks in any toasters today.
Definitely sounds like we need to include courses in "Uncommon Sense" at Starfleet Academy, if the only reason he didn't poke things with a stick was a good roll.

Maybe see about developing some drones or the like that can be beamed down to take close-up readings and whatnot in situation where sending living crewmen might not be advisable? Or at least some sort of improved hazard-suits?

Demonstration might not be a bad idea, yeah. I'd say go for it.

This person deserves a raise.
And a medal and citation.

Those poor red shirts were so confused/happy that they wouldn't be fed to the monster of the week that they chipped in and bought the Captain a nice gift.

"Sir, Starfleet Command has sent you their congratulations on a job well done and says there's a Starfleet Cross waiting for you when you get home."

"Very good, Ensign."

"Also, the crew is like, totally grateful that you didn't send us down to be turned into horrifying flesh pillars -"

"- least I could do."

"So we talked to Admiral Kahurangi and we uh, got you a gift."

"Oh that's-- WAIT, IS THAT WHAT I THINK IT IS"

"Yes sir. A teacup. Pig."

"HOLY SHIT FUCK YES. LOOK! LOOK ENSIGN RICKY, LOOK AT THOSE LITTLE HOOVES. THE SNOUT! OH MY GOD. GET A PICTURE."

It's not really talked about, but the really important part about Star Trek humanity moving past money and material greed is that there is no Weyland-Yutani corporate suit tagging along to stop you from taking off and nuking it from orbit as the only way to be sure...

That's Section 31's jo- *zap*

Section 31 agent Starfleet Official: 'Target neutralized' *cough* Move along citizen nothing to see here.
