While we could have fought down the Sydraxian task force, or at least pulled them into an ambush by Commodore Crogan's force. But given our overall aims, that would be quite counterproductive.

So we have managed to go to ground and slip our way back through into Yrillian space. We have a new rendezvous point at a new star forty lightyears galactic north of Ethur II, nicely tucked away in a nebula.

The Diplomatic Service has tapped us on the shoulder to convey ambassadors to a Qloathi colony to meet with Dawiar representatives. Starfleet Intel tells us this is a high-risk operation, and that if the Cardassians or Lecarre become aware of it, there is a possibility this could go completely pear-shaped.

Captain Taggart on the Winterwind is helping escort us, a welcome boon. The Kumari and Vigour will patrol the CBZ and Themis Strait to help keep the coast clear.

Outpost Commander's Log, Tipperary Outpost, Stardate 24928.8 - Commander Hurzyth th'Payyath

With the Thirishar only now returning to action, and the Intrepid undergoing emergency warp coil maintenance after having to tow the Thirishar, we found ourselves very short-handed.

Unfortunately, the SS Joreke has been caught outside our ability to cover. The interstellar cargo-hauler has gone up, costing a series of replacement life support components for Biroth Orbital Platform. The crew was rescued by a Caldonian cruiser, thankfully.

Captain's Log, USS Avandar, Stardate 24929.3 - Captain Huth fop Makpol

We received a call from the mining colony at Harper's Mane, where a trade negotiation with an Orion hypercorp was going very sour. When we arrived, it was very clear that some fast dealing was going on, so we intervened. We also had some indications that the Syndicate was trying to use this exaggerated deal to help fund their efforts, but we needed some time to prove it, so we had to tie down their negotiating team. So myself and my fellow Tellarite tactical officer decided to take over negotiations. I can't fast talk Lieutenant-Commander Hakogh, the Orion delegation didn't have a hope.

Proof came in from the Signals office, and we just received word that the entire C-suite of the hypercorp have been arrested, ending the negotiations.

We have met with someone who our Intel boffins aboard believe is the chief advisor in the Yrillian government executive work gang. The Diplomatic Service believes that while the domestic powers of the Yrillian government are very weak, they still maintain broad foreign policy powers, and can carry out this work.

-

Captain's Log, USS Challorn, Stardate 24929.8

We have arrived in orbit around the Qloathian colony world of Roqana. The presence of a sleek Qloathian cruiser in orbit was reassuring. For now, I will beam down with the ambassadorial team to meet with the Dawiar.

-

Captain's Log, USS Courageous, Stardate 24930.4

The Yrillians are sceptical of the will of the Federation to commit to a war if it comes to it against the Cardassians or the Sydraxians. While they accept that we are larger, more powerful, especially so compared to the Sydraxians, we are nonetheless unlikely to commit to the fight properly.

There are few things I hate more than 'hard men making hard decisions' type arguments. So I may have pontificated a little. The advisers have withdrawn for now to decide on the Yrillian government's reaction.

-

Captain's Log, USS Challorn, Stardate 24930.8

One of the Dawiar representatives has been very hostile to us. Talking with our Qloath hosts, we have learned that this man's eldest son was killed during the battle with the Polaris and this has made him very cynical and angry.

At first I thought that's just the wages of being war-like ... but after thinking it over, your firstborn is your firstborn. This isn't something you simply reason through. I lost a close friend on the Polaris, I wonder if I can reach out to him...

-

Captain's Log, USS Courageous, Stardate 24931.2

We have the word of the chief adviser that the Yrillians will join with the Gretarians to reach out to the Sydraxian Hierarchy to push them to meet the Federation at the negotiating table before this goes to war.

I have directed the Courageous to return to Starbase 8 at Vega. From here, we must wait.

[Yrillian cooperation secured]

Captain's Log, USS Challorn, Stardate 24931.6

One thing learned: the Dawiar are not big fans of synthehol. Despite this, after sitting down with the angry delegate, and ducking a punch from him, I have talked him around, and the meeting is now going much smoother.

You missed the dates again^^. And I feel like those two sentences don't really fit together, especially the first one seems incomplete.

While we could have fought down the Sydraxian task force, or at least pulled them into an ambush by Commodore Crogan's force, we decided against it since given our overall aims, that would have been quite counterproductive. (or something like that)

Otherwise a very nice update with some really nice progress on the diplomatic front.

2312.Q4.M1 - Master of Orion
"Rear Admiral Uhura."

Nyota Uhura looks up to see an officer in Ops colours approaching her desk.

"Yes, Lieutenant?" she asks.

"Communique from the Union government. Your eyes only." The officer hands over a padd displaying only Starfleet Intelligence seal.

"Thank you, Lieutenant. Would you the yeoman on your way out to bring me another coffee?" asks Uhura as she sets aside what she was working on and picks up the new padd.

"Yes, ma'am."

Once the door has quietly shut behind the young officer, Uhura uses a thumb-press and a quick spoken authorisation to unlock the document. And then she nearly falls out of her seat as she goes rigid.

"Bridge, Admiral."

"Bridge here, Admiral, what can we do for you?"

"Kindly inform the task force that we are to move to Yellow Alert status."

"The fleet, ma'am?"

"The entire task force, including the Frontier Police, Scrutineers, and everyone else. Post-haste."

Duaba Broadcast News Corp

We interrupt this broadcast with a breaking news report. Five minutes ago, opposed-entry drop shuttles launched from orbiting Union Navy starships, headed for unknown targets on the surface. Diffuse phaser fire is being exchanged with exurban areas and orbit.

Another breaking report! A tremendous flash of light and a mushroom cloud has been spotted on the southern continent. We have unconfirmed reports that a photon torpedo strike was launched on what had been believed to be uninhabited land on the southern continent.

We are now being deluged with reports and can only conclude that the long-awaited assault of government forces has begun. We-

Anti-Slavery Task Force Progress Report

Biggest news first: mid-way through the month, the Union unleashed their crackdown on Duaba. Apparently the trials in Amarkia are making it too politically difficult to take the slow approach, and they needed to wrest the narrative away. In the opinion of the staff of the ASTF, this is an extraordinarily poor rationale and approach. But it is their government and world. We may only hope that it produces results without the costs we anticipate.

Of course, it is already bloody. Neither side is pulling punches. Ships in orbit used a photon torpedo barrage to obliterate a hidden Syndicate base in wilderness areas rather than assault it. Hundreds of government soldiers and security services personnel have died assaulting prepared Syndicate positions, and flooding downtown areas. Despite this, they have made massive waves of arrests, and the Syndicate is rapidly losing its ability to operate in a coordinated manner on Duaba. Of course, the real question will be how well can the Union forces handle it when the Syndicate goes to ground. In an uglier reversal, a complex ambush on landing zones for one SSD-Reserve unit resulted in over half the unit being killed outright.

[1hp Aerocommando, 2hp ISSU, 2hp SSD, 4hp SDD-Reserve killed]
[Unknown Syndicate losses, believed in excess of 5hp merc, 4hp local assets, plus 8hp local assets arrested - planetary Shodar and many staff believed killed in photon torpedo bombing]

[15 Impact, 12 Cost]

Locally, we placed the CFP on high alert, and they have prevented any outbreaks in our areas of operations. On Freedom, Office 24 has led the way in following up on the captured Syndicate leader's network. This has seen mixed results; many of them assumed that we would acquire information from the Shodar anyway, and went to ground right away. Nonetheless, we have made a number of arrests.

Times of Amarkia

Check...? Check...? Are we back on air?

O-okay. We're back. Ladies and Gentlemen, it is my grave duty to report that a weapon of mass destruction has been set off in the capital. Many are dead, perhaps hundreds of thousands. Most of downtown is demolished. The blast is believed to have centred on the Courthouse...

"Admiral? Admiral Sousa?"

"Wha...?" You shift groggily in your bed as the disembodied voice disrupts your slumber. "I'm up..."

"Admiral, you're needed at headquarters. Someone set off a photon torpedo in downtown Lironh on Amarkia."

Adrenaline burns every other impulse out of your body as you sit bolt upright. "What!?"

"I also need to advise you the Amarkian fleet has been ordered to gather around Amarkia and Selindra. We suspect the Selindra force may be directed into Union space whether they will it or no."

"Stars have mercy," you mutter.

"Also, President sh'Arrath wants you in Paris the moment you are no longer needed at Starfleet HQ in a crisis management capacity."

[Council session incoming]

Well, shit. Looks like the Gendarmes and some more Amarkian "help" is coming along, whether we want it or not.

Someone set off a photon torpedo in downtown Lironh on Amarkia.
If we go off the old Technical Manuel numbers a photon torpedo has a yield of 64.4 megatons. If that is the case here then Lironh is gone along with anyone who lived in a roughly 20km radius.

For comparison here are the estimated casualties, courtesy of Nukemap, is such a blast went off in the following cities:
  • New York - 6,881,960 dead and 3,981,520 injured
  • Washington DC - 2,021,890 dead and 1,465,040 injured
  • London - 5,163,870 dead and 3,070,230 injured
  • Paris - 6,320,690 dead and 2,621,440 injured
  • Tokyo - 9,796,790 dead and 9,570,750 injured
  • New Delhi - 12,936,260 dead and 5,549,720 injured
So depending upon how high the population density is in and around Lironh we're looking at millions to tens of millions dead and an equal number injured.

It was a small warhead to allow it to be smuggled in and Amarkia routinely runs shields on their government buildings to absorb energy and redirect blast energy away. Upsides of being a martial people; you think in that sort of manner.

Still wasn't fun for anyone, however.

Edit:
PS, this is part of why the Syndicate has been taking limited perceived actions lately, have had that one sitting in my pocket for a while <.<

Sweet mother of holy fuck. What is the Syndicate thinking? The UFP isn't just going to shut up and go away if you bomb one of their member worlds. Wowza.

@OneirosTheWriter What is our Affiliate status with the Dawiar and the Yrillians now, given that we've been negotiating with the Yrillians and the Dawiar just tipped over 100?

Was it coincidence that the Orion Union gov also used Photons starting this quarter?

Curious - What was the rolls like to prevent the photon torp from being smuggled in?

It's worse than just 32 cost, isn't it?

Much worse.
Oh speaking of cost: we're in trouble.

MoO Q1 = 6 + 10 + 7 = 23 Cost
MoO Q2 = 4 + 7 + 6 = 17 Cost
MoO Q3 = 8 + 0 + 8 = 16 Cost
MoO Q4.M1 = 32 + ? + ? = Min(32) Cost
EoY = 23 + 17 + 16 + 32 = 88 Cost

There is a very good chance we could hit 100 Cost by the end of the year. Hell if you consider that we racked up 65 Cost last year and that half that carries forwards then we're already at 120 Cost!

It seems like the Dawair might feel like they have very limited options for the future. They know the Federation is expanding rapidly and they have two examples of what could become their future. Either their join and integrate like the Amarki, forgoing their own ambitions for the Federation's. Or they become surrounded and engulfed like the Orions, and end up in a position where the Federation can intervene in their affairs anyway.

I don't think the thought of either option is going to fill them with much pleasure. But they have to know the Cardassians are never going to risk much for them. It might take a while but I think our best bet is to try and convince them that they are better off having some say in the Federation, instead of digging in and becoming an isolated enclave.

I mean the 32 cost in the sense that there were probably important things destroyed in the 20 cost bomb.

In addition to the million or so innocent people.

Don't want to think about that.

But I mean, only 20 cost? I mean the attack on Duaba was 12 cost (and 5), and no member world suffered anything really significant in it, but a major terrorist attack in the heart of a member state is only 20?

Cardassian client states won't affiliate with you while they're already Cardassian client states. Vice versa applies.

Is there a way to wrest them away from the Cardies, or would something narrative need to happen first (IE, we beat the Cardassian fleet like a drum and secure concessions)?

Thus the emergency Council meeting, methinks...

The Amarkians are a martial people. This hurts, but it's probably not as big a deal as doing it to, say, Earth would be.

Well, this can only lead to one thing: escalation. The Council isn't going to back down, to do so would cause them to appear to be weak.

I just hope they don't force Sousa to resign.

Probably hoping that the Amarki reaction will legitimise their resistance/behaviour as defenders against an oppressive alien regime /Federation).

Now I'm not one to complain about lower death tolls but photon torpedo warheads are already pretty damn small. They clock in at around 3kg and going off the schematics online are about 10cm in diameter.

Still all the other stuff would definitely apply!
I'd imagine they used the largest they felt they could reliably manage. Perhaps it had to be implanted/ingested/similar, in which case 3kg is rather a lot.
