You know, we could technically start the Ambassador design project next year without a concrete ship design, since we know the research of it is going to take at least a year, before the prototype begins construction (and when we need to know the concrete resource costs). The extremely detailed-oriented of us may be uncomfortable with not being able to compare prospective designs over different years and expected researched tech to determine when the optimal year to start the design would be, but the difference between our expectations from the older spreadsheet and what the new spreadsheet would generate likely would be relatively minor anyway.

If we get into a situation where the spreadsheet not being ready before next snakepit would force a slowdown or delay of quest updates, then this is another option.

So on a lark I decided to go and make a chart in Illustrator of Starfleet's various deployments etc.

Should be accurate at least to the degree the front page is, and is p easy for me to edit either way.

e: fixed label placement
e2: named the nameless beast
e3: added CBZ starbase

Could you shift the words over so they are on the brighter sections of the rectangles? It's a little hard to read them as is.

Yeah I am maintaining it, just no updates since it has been done. Affiliates may be off since I grabbed them from the Grey October status page, though Members is accurate and ships under construction is accurate.

You might want to update the Apiata, then. Sulu briefed us on their forces at the beginning of the Apiata foxtrot, and I think they had a full dozen new stingers.

The Akiras serve a special wartime role: they're smallcraft tenders. I suspect that aside from being armed cruisers they also serve to keep the peregrines and whatnot operational during battles and campaigns

I think I must be forgetting something. Where do we know about the small craft tender role from?

Basically the fanon of the guy who made it. :V

Well, there's the fact their stated shuttle compliment is fifty and their shuttlebay doors are bow rather than stern unlike nearly every other Federation design.

Apparently they're also good for evacuations and large-scale planetary operations like detailed survey.
Don't forget Akiras are awesome for not only being, essentially, Light/Escort Carriers, they're also Torpedo Boats; the rollbar's center module has a dozen or more torpedo launchers. Even if you cut that in half to make it "reasonable", 6 torpedo launchers is pretty baller.

Akiras are awesome and I will always support the creation of them, alongside Defiants.

I'm a fully paid up me enter of the Akira fan club too. Though I also really like the Centaur and the Saber.

As an aside, the Akiras are literally named for the Movie. So there's that.
This changes everything.

Okay, so should Nausicaa go to a diplomacy ship, or would that be a better name for an explorer? Freighter obviously needs to be called Kiki. Totoro... cloaked intelligence vessel? Eh, it's a bit of a stretch.

Wait, if Starfleet is going to name things after anime, why do we not have tachikomas?

I would consider adjusting the color scheme.

Personally, I like Nord and its variants.

GitHub - arcticicestudio/nord: A arctic, north-bluish color palette.

Also, I would consider dropping "USS" to save space.

Nausicaa is the home world of the Nausicaans who we should be meeting in the next decade or so.

The CBZ has Lapycorias Station/Starbase 9, it just hasn't been added to the front page yet.

I am a longstanding Akira-class fanboy as well.

Hey if you need any reminder how flawed some of the DS9 TM stats are:
The following information of specifications and defenses comes exclusively from the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Technical Manual:
  • Production Base: ASDB Integration Facility, Antares Fleet Yards, Antares IV.
  • Type: Heavy Cruiser.
  • Accommodation: 500 officers and crew; 4,500 personnel evacuation limit.
  • Power Plant: One 1,500 plus Cochrane warp core feeding two nacelles; one impulse system.
  • Dimensions: Length, 464.43 meters; beam, 316.67 meters; height, 87.43 meters.
  • Mass: 3,055,000 metric tonnes.
  • Performance: Warp 9.8 for 12 hours.
  • Armament: Six type-10 phaser emitters; Two photon torpedo launchers.
Emphasis mine.

I've seen some fan theories that try to reconcile low torpedo counts that say the various tubes are served by one launcher that sort of slides between them, maybe to reduce wear or as a different variant on the Galaxy's classes' burst fire mode. If you go by actual tube count it gets up to 12, which seems a little ridiculous.

EDIT: Alex Jaeger is a pure cinnamon bun, check out that smiley
"So naturally when i was designing the Akira I was in military mode and since it was only going to show up in Earth's defense for the film I loaded it up with lots of defensive/offensive weapons. Also 'Earth defense' was another task I had in mind with the carrier aspect. The 'peace mission' wasn't on the forefront of my mind, but I can see how as a rescue ship the fly-through bays would work great for evacuation efforts in regions where transporters may not work. So having the ability to quick dock shuttles and get them back out asap would be a big plus. And the 'weapons pod' could be converted into a science sensor array for 'exploring strange new worlds'. :)"

Akira for TNG hospital ship base design?

There are small Anime references scattered throughout Trek. 80s/90s geeks liked Anime as much as current ones do.

I've been pushing for a ship named Mikasa for a while. Maybe one of the Connie-Bees. It's a pretty famous Earth battleship after all, and the original might still be around in TBG-verse.

I still think that naming our ships after warships sends the wrong message. If we want Starfleet's stated mission of peaceful exploration to be taken seriously, we should be trying to memorialize more peaceful and exploratory events.

Speaking of I had a realization about two of our shipnames:
USS Winterwind NCC-2104
USS Yukikaze NCC-2101

Completely different names, right? Except that Yukikaze is (as per wikipedia and the translation provided in @sebsmith's omake) translated from Japanese as "Snowy Wind". Which is a sort of Winter wind.

What I'm getting at is this probably leads to a lot of Who's On First style confusions when dealing with Starfleet personnel who have their translators set to provide more literal translations.

"You're assigned to USS Snowwind on Dock 3."

"I thought I was going to USS Snow Wind on Dock 5?"

"Snow Wind is on Dock 5 but you're going to Snowwind on Dock 3"

I bet this happens a lot to Vulcans, actually, as they probably only have one word for snow. Meanwhile, Andorians never have this problem because even when set to high literalism, their language can distinguish between a wind that fortells winter, a wind during wintertime, wind carrying some snow, wind carrying a lot of snow, very fast wind carrying a lot of snow, a gentle breeze carrying some snow, etc

This might catch humans too if they're relying on Japanese/English-to-[Otherlanguage] translations.
