[X] External Intercoolers (+Complexity [A -> B+]/+1 Cost, +Cruise) (One Success Roll: Cruise Increase [0.2 - 0.4]

I might be dealing with an old paradigm but this kind of cruise boost seems worth it for something that already gets OHKO'd in combat.

Plus it would giving the engineers more control (and smaller/hopefully replicator-friendly pieces). Seems like something fiddly to fix but likely field fixable given (lots) of time vs something that's more difficult to break but as a solid piece is almost impossible to field repair.

At the risk of poisoning the vote here are some images with fins (I've not read the diagram, low effort googling to stack exchange post with more pics).

Let's make super expensive nacelles and then make a fleet of single-engine ships!!!
You sound like you're trying to engage in mockery here, but this an entirely valid strategic school of thought. Especially if we make them internal nacelles in expanded saucers, we can get comparable warp performance for less cost and greater durability. We'd have to do some square one testing for optimal use, but that's not a huge obstacle.

If we can make an orb/single nacelle freighter for half the cost that's faster than half the speed, that's a net win as long as we have enough crew. And random freighters don't need Starfleet level training, so it should be fine. It's probably ok for science ships as well, though everything else I would want full ships.

If extra cost is worth it for more Max Warp, it's definitely worth it for more Cruise.

Honestly I think the Cygnus could've gotten by with a single nacelle...

I'm here to vote for high maneuverability and cruise speed options.

And I'm all out of high maneuverability options.

Makes them very expensive, but there are many ways this could more than pay for itself. Let's just hope we actually get decent propulsion roles, for once.

My reasoning is twofold. One, more cruise is good, especially considering it potentially allows for further increases in overall warp velocity by being able to sacrifice cruise optimizations for overall speed, or to go even faster at cruise by optimizing for it.

Two, the Constitution-class' twin nacelles do have visible external pipe assemblies, which heavily implies that the external intercoolers are the option that the Federation of the canon timeline went for.
