I feel like the ship that we really need is a much larger bulk hauler and that will get all the good efficiency stuff.
This ship is not what starfleet needs and will thus very quickly find itself obsolete so best to keep it simple lest an interim fix turn into something permanent.
To be honest saying "This ship isn't what starfleet needs", when it's following the brief they asked for, a small, fast, well armed cargo ship.
Seems pretty unproductive to me. If they didn't need it they wouldn't be asking for it, especially with how limited production capacity is.

This may increase a per ship cost, but starfleet will likely not need nearly as many of them as they would if they were slower.

There's an argument either way, but that cruising speed is tempting...

[X] Keep the design as is rather than driving up production costs.

As much as it pains me to say this, she needs to be cheap. Even with a planned refit to the Warp 5 standard, these probably aren't going to be in service terribly long, especially if we start cracking transformative technologies.

I really want to prototype this before we make the NX

My personal goal here is to keep the total cost of production underneath 12 so that we can still have 20 industry ticking up. A single phase cannon costs 2 industry last time, so I'm wary of driving the cost up here.

Being short on industry is exactly how we're going to run into bullshit like the Enterprise sailing out before it's fully fitted.

I don't know, depending on how the question I'm about to ask gets answered, I might change my vote to the increased cruise.

@Sayle If we take the longer nacelles, and then we refit the ship later to have the Warp-5 capability, will we keep the increased cruising speed or will that be lost in the refit?

Though I guess I could understand if you don't want to answer that and consider it too metagamey.

The idea that these won't be in service long doesn't make much sense to me, front line combatants, explorers, and science ships need rapid upgrades and innovation, but freighters... kind of don't it's a rear line duty I'm pretty sure we will always need more freighters, sure they might not stay top of their class but there will be work for them until they're ridiculously outclassed.

These are probably going to be run until they actually break down.

Niches. We have slow bulk haulers in the Boomers. For fast cargo, we're contracting out to the Vulcans. We probably can't compete with the latter until we get the Warp 5 engine at least, but at the same time there are cargoes we want going to and from the colonies faster and that we don't want third parties to get their hands on. It's probably fairly infrequent, small or coming purely as data, so having only the first or second production run is probably fine.

So I'm willing to splurge for a little extra cruise.

It is mentioned more costs are coming so would rather keep room in the budget for those

Since we're coming up with ships in the NX-era, I thought I would link this fan ship design video. It might be cool to make something similar. Obviously it wouldn't be exactly the same because it uses so much non-canon equipment but something similar would be cool.

Edit: Here's an actual pic of the ship.

see no need to hold back on defence and propulsion.

let those pirates work for their money.
