I mean, it makes sense. In two hundred years we went from ships of the line that were less than two hundred feet long to the nearly nine hundred feet long Iowa and Essex classes. Honestly, it's almost a surprise the 24th century ships aren't even bigger than they are.
tbh there are even larger ships than Federation ones around by that point, the Federation just doesn't build up to that size, presumably for doctrinal reasons.

Alternate designs that never could...

Here is an alternate layout Sagamartha that has slightly more internal volume despite being a half saucer by using a ring structure, short inline secondary hull, and BOTH a top AND bottom offset hull.

This idea is that this is an alternate universe Terran Empire pure dreadnaught Sagamartha. It sacrifices science labs in favor of the ability to mount 6 impulse 2 thrusters giving it absurd maneuverability for a craft of it's size. It forgoes aft armament almost entirely in favor of 12 saucer and ring structure mounted forward facing phasors matched with an overwhelming three forward photon torpedo tubes.

This ship serves as a hunter killer. It's goal is to pick a target in an engagement and to ruthlessly remove it as quickly as possible.

I call it the Mariana class.

Length 187 Meters
Beam 158.375 Meters
Height 75.75 Meters
Mass 469,800 tons
16 decks
22 officers, 126 enlisted, 200 marines
Type 1 deflector shields
12 type 1 phasors
3 type 1 photon torpedo tubes

While the Thunderlord and Dagger class warships had won the Vulcan War for the Terran Empire, and the Drake class ruthlessly enforced Imperial Order over all the world in the newly expanded Terran Empire, a new class of ship was required to expand beyond the boundaries of the Empire and it's new vassals.

Thus the Mariana was conceived. This ship could deliver the iron fist of Empire to further reaches than had ever been dreamed. None would stand in the way of Imperial manifest destiny.

Such a vessel was beyond expensive even for the Empire to construct. It would have been completely out of a lesser society's reach due to it's sheer cost. It was only through the Terran Empire's ability to ruthlessly work countless millions of thralls to death in it's mines and foundries that such an image of power could grace the stars.

EDIT - If someone who understands the math better than me wants to chime in with this absurd thing's combat statistics I would love to include them. I just have no idea how the math works

EDIT 2 - I remembered that we turned down the option of supplemental deflectors and realizing that it occurred to me that this is obviously the option the Terran Empire took and is now a key design choice.

EDIT 3 - I realized it required a name change. Now the Mariana, with sister ships Tonga, Philippine, Kuril–Kamchatka, and Kermadec.

When we have to make a dedicated warship class again i want to name them for rude gestures for 3 reasons.

1 - for some reason you discarded diplomatic options and thats a bad idea so when you see one them that point is made clearly.
2- rude gestures are not a human only thing so is open to all races.
3- i just want the official names to be pictograms.

Ah yes the day the Dominion came to know of the power of the UFS Middle Finger.

Our mirror universe counterparts get to do mushrooms at work? No fair.

How about the UFS F.A.A.F.O.
(F**k Around And Find Out)

Heh.
UFS F.A.A.F.O. is actually appropriate for the ship we are voting on the name of.
Its purpose is to experiment (F.A.) and explore (F.O.).
But if anyone decides to mess with us (F.A.) they'll Find Out how dangerous we are.

I have to admit, some aspects of the 'Terran Empire' ships might be interesting to see implemented on our ships. In moderation, of course. Specifically the curved nacelle struts and the Mariana's over-under secondary hulls.

The Huron type from TAS

The Medusan ship from TOS remastered

Not the worst, but funky federation designs exist in the base timeline as well.

…I don't get it. Are there two perpendicular saucers for some reason, or is the cylinder the primary hull, and what saucers are just overbuilt Connecting arms to the nacelles ring?
I honestly don't even know. I was just messing around with shapes and radial rather than bilateral symmetry. I haven't even give it a once over to round off the edges and make it look nice. This was really intended as a 10 minute project brick joke than anything else.

I do think I was thinking "DOUBLE SAUCERS!" at some point in the design process, but they really don't come off as very saucery with that big central shaft.

Speaking of memes, I realized my scaling was off on the Cali-Saga image. In fact you could hide the Saga behind one side-to-side with just the very tips of the nacelles and leading ventral edge of the engineering hull poking out. Image has been edited for accuracy.
And yet a vessel that big STILL has a hallway of communal bunks for the enlisted crew... 🤢

Mirror!Cygnus: full saucer, sprinter config.

Mirror!Thunderchild: half-saucer, offset secondary hull, quad-nacelle arrangement.

Skate's development was so heavily influenced by the light arrowhead hull it's actually difficult to say what an alternate version would have looked like beyond a half-saucer.
