Seconded with every fiber of my being, @Sayle . I'm aware this would mean more work for you, so if it isn't viable no big deal, but it would help so damn much with not having the thread explode over what shape the ship should be.

Doing the designwork, especially for major features like the saucer section, often takes several hours. There's just no way I'm doing that in duplicate.

I'll wait for some more tech advancements down the line before aiming for the arrowhead
 
Yeah, initial hopes for an arrowhead hull were that the design would allow for a highly maneuverable torpedo-boat like ship, our own Starfleet Bird of Prey, but the design at this scale directly impacts its ability to barely even hold one torpedo tube.
 
Aight, one last hurrah for a torpedo-heavy design (i.e. half-saucer base) before I (maybe) throw in the towel: the Enties' and Thunderchild's hull shapes and armament distribution mean that a lot of the time to keep as many of their cannons on-target as possible they have to be out of alignment for slinging torpedoes at a target they've softened up. If we want to have torpedoes as the sucker punch to take out enemy vessels after sapping their shields with cannons, this means that the heavier ships need a backup that can carry torpedoes to take advantage of vulnerabilities. Even a half-saucer hull is almost certainly faster at orienting torpedo tubes than either of the heavy ship types, and more tubes equals more torpedoes equals making it harder to nullify a strike (assuming that shooting down torpedoes is a thing that happens; otherwise it's simply outputting more effective firepower at a time). The best we can reasonably hope for with the arrowhead hull sight unseen is one torpedo tube and if we make a serious compromise in the design we might get a second; the half-saucer's worst torpedo armament is likely to match the arrowhead's absolute best.

Something that might be easier to provide that would still help with making choices is giving an estimate of the total costs of the remaining elements. The difference right now is only 2 industry, but presumably the rest of the systems are also going to come out cheaper with the arrowhead.

To a point. They can still theoretically be shot down, it's just a lot more difficult due to them having a thicker Hp bar and limited tracking.
True, I was just pointing out the differences between the old atomics/spatials and the new photonics, on the subject of point-defense.

Photonics, I think, are also a hell of a lot faster than the older torpedoes, along with a much longer range.
 
It's probably worth considering that, unlike the Thunderchild and her sisters which will likely be quietly retired after the war, this ship we're working on is likely to stick around for a while after, becoming something of a mainstay for Star Fleet.

We aren't designing a warship here, we're designing a ship that can be used for war.

Sayle has mentioned post-war refits for the Thunderchild-class, so hopefully we don't retire her.
 
Post formation of the federation we could relabel the Thunderchild class as Defense Crusiers who stay in Federation territory running security missions.


Edit just imagine what a Thunderchild refit with Andorian and Vulcan help could do.
 
If Starfleet wanted something that could be useful after the war then I don't think we be limited to arrow or half-saucer designs.
