>deployable landing system

Interesting, but, I don't think it's the best fit for the project.

A biosciences ship is probably meant to tackle exploration of new biospheres with potentially hazardous (possibly clever) animals, or assist with viral outbreaks.

All of which would have much easier time getting on/in the hull if you just land it right there.
Don't even need a xenomorph, just some novel vacuum resistant or metal eating bacteria infecting the primary hull would be really complicated to get rid of.

I'm sure interlocks, security and decontamination protocols exist.
But restricting contact with unknown landing shuttles only, with a single entry point, would provide an additional degree of separation, containment, and increased safety.

A utility lander design is great if you need to move a lot of cargo or make extensive use of fabrication machines onboard the ship.
But it's a thing you land on a planet with known hazards that your safeties can definitely handle.
And a science ship doesn't need a lot of traffic - it only needs small samples to analyze.

Nevermind then, as you were.

If nothing else such a ship class would definitely become very famous.

Infact, this option should probably come with minor bonus science.
The ship/crew itself practically provides free data as they take on all optional disaster scenarios and vigorously attempt to clear them without perishing.
Very cost efficient design and progressive approach to testing.

And we get more production orders to replace written off hulls.
It's a win-win.

Let's be fair to Troi, she did a by-the-books emergency saucer section landing. Like literally, she did exactly what's in the tech manual. The saurcer section kept structural integrity and functioned exactly as designed for its intended purpose.

The ship blew up before she had to evacuate. And that was NOT her fault. Turns out that fighting without your shields, even against a bird of prey, is a Bad Idea.

That is true, and I will admit the Engineering hull's detonation knocked out her control systems and left her no choice but to glide down effectively "dead stick" as well as the landing area being rather rugged/mountainous. Just wanted to meme a bit, is all.

Per some stuff the Constitution-class could separate its saucer in an emergency
By severing the neck with explosive bolts, yes. What was innovative about the Galaxies and contemporary ships was building in the ability to re-dock, with impulse engines mounted on both the primary and secondary hulls, and with the two sections attached with magnetic clamps.

Speaking of landing and explosives. Didn't some warplanes have explosives in the landing gear areas just in case they got stuck while deploying?

I've been contemplating ship displays. Now obviously this isn't something to consider with TOS given its sparse hull decorations, but when it comes to TMP+ when you start getting more elaborate paints and hull detailing, would people be interested in having a larger scale top-down view? Maybe instead of a 0.5 meter resolution going more towards something like 0.2. Only top-down, though, keeping the others at the same sort of scale.
