[X] Eight Phase Cannons (Industry 29 -> 45) (Average Damage: 5)

@Sayle could we opt for a compromise with 7 cannons where we only double up on the ventral aft cannon? It seems like it has the best value to double up on because it can shoot in all 4 directions on the ventral side. In comparison the dorsal cannon only seems to only add firepower to the dorsal rear aspect. Leaving it out would drop that direction to 6 damage instead of 8 which seems acceptable. By my math this would be avg 4.75 damage for 43 industry.

NX-Class only had 3 so no matter which of those two win it will be better armed in the aft. Yes no torpedoes in the aft sucks, but I think the increased cannons make up for it either way. That's why I voted for only 6.
Yes on the early days the enterprise had three guns. That increased throughout every session to more an more guns all over the ship. (Clearly that means they needed more guns)
According to (composite information of memory Alpha/beta the NX class had in 2154 12 Pulsed Phase cannons, 4 forward and 2 aft torpedo launchers. That was barely enough and the entire class got an incredible expensive refit before being shutdown anyway a few years later.

So yes starting out with 8 guns is costing us 4 Industry per ship over doing it with 6. In either way we can only built one per year so why make it substandard? If this was a choice of getting 2 ships per year or one you would be right. As is this is just hoarder mentality.

[X] Six Phase Cannons (Industry 29 -> 41) (Average Damage: 3.75)

While I am tempted by the eight cannon choice, the description for the six cannons has the two on the saucer's dorsal side able to cover the aft as well, which allows it to address concerns about coverage and firepower aftwards.

Words cannot describe how much better it feels to see that secondary hull. Would have liked the semicircle primary, but ehh.

It would already be better than the canon NX-01 with six phase cannons, since that only had three to start with.
It already is with anything but 3 guns and combat isn't the only thing we changed the design for.

Yeah, to be clear, I was comparing to Enterprise's refit configuration, not the original one.

I suppose we could do the same, and add some extra cannons during a refit after the Xindi attack Earth. But ultimately I don't think there's a reason not to make this ship the best combatant it can be, given that essentially the future of Earth rides on it at several points.

@Sayle expanding on this, alternatively to 8 cannons, 9 seems like it would be more effective if we doubled up on both the forward dorsal cannons instead of the dorsal aft cannon because they can each shoot 3 directions. My math says that ends up at 6.25 avg damage for 47 industry because it brings the dorsal sides up to 4 damage (from 2, which is the weakest aspect in all the other configurations) and the dorsal rear up to 10.

But with the 8, one of the aft two can also shoot forward which would give it 7 forward phaser canons.

Space is as dangerous as it is wondrous, so I'd rather not skimp on defense.

Stop, we have the options we have. Stop pressing for more. If you would like more granular options for future designs that is fine but don't try to retroactively add more options.

Where is this info about it having twelve phase cannons coming from? The best I can find is that the refit/updated NX-class had six cannons total and five torpedo tubes.

I'm pretty sure we could fit more cannons in future refits without all those torpedo launchers taking up valuable space.
