Yay! We're making progress!

Also, in reference to this:
You stare out into the murk, straining your eyes and ears and senses and trying to see. It's a pity Homura isn't with you, because a flare or two would be great right about now.

We don't need flares anymore. We can just generate light with a scaled down Prima Luce. (Granted, this doesn't mean we don't need Homura.)

Wow! Solid progress! Demonstrating our intent in combat worked well, agreed?

Nah, flares can be tossed away from you with meguca throwing power, Sabrina's light generation only works within 100m. :p
Seconded, for the anticipation that Sabrina will someday really wish she had proper anti-missile countermeasures. Interesting things happen around heroes?

[x] I need access to the blanket fort.

@Spectral Waltz - Sure, nice stuff. We could.
[] "I want a big party. I want all of my friends, in a big enough space, to celebrate, with food and drink, and not have to worry about where the next meal or the next cleanse is coming from. I want to rejoice in the common ground of having purpose, of jobs and lives outside of this Cruel system that Kyubey designed. I want to bring magical girls together without needing to worry about fear, or anger, or fights breaking out between them. I want to throw a fucking gala, not like there's no tomorrow, but because tomorrow will be something we don't need to fear any longer. You get me?"
-[] "And in case it wasn't clear, I want you and Yuma to be there."

Mami and Kyouko is not something that we should talk about here. We ARE making progress on that right now. The moment for our next positive act will come when Kyouko decides, and not a moment sooner. But at this rate, it will arrive.

As to "trading" with Kyouko, the first thing to acknowledge is parity - Sabrina wants a better world too, and she can't get it trying solo. Everybody wants personal variations on "a better life," and that makes sharing the goal easier. We are in similar, but not identical, need.

In fact, Kyouko is far from poor in regards to exchange with us. Sabrina has a vast debt of time and attention. Sabrina has set in motion Big Events, with many more to come.
The simple fact is we need help, to the extent that we don't even know what help we will need yet. Only that the time is coming.

If the concept of "taking a share of the responsibility" for the actions leading to our vision of the ideal world for Magical Girls and everyone isn't a payment she can wrap her head around, then we can also try an old business negotiation trick....

Make her name the terms.
Give her three days to write down her (probably much overdue) future planning essay, the one she would have been confronting if school hadn't faded away after her family died. Everything became pre-determined before Sabrina showed up. The literal fight for survival had Kyouko's undivided attention, and there was nothing else left over once she joined up with Yuma. A Future plan is culturally appropriate as a vehicle for drawing out what her thinking should actually be, now that she might live for a few years. This is her issue ATM, she hasn't quite allowed herself a future yet. But it is now staring right at her. If she could say what she wants out of life, we could have a better discussion. It would be worth us considering if Madoka and Homura would be valuable peers when that happens. Well, ideally Junko and Homura, but let's not be picky.

I think Kyouko is fairly ready to tackle this introspection. As she has re-defined herself as Yuma's big sister, this required connection to other people. That step is done. As we can demonstrate our group in the context of girls forming a non-victimizing society, I think she will discover many motives in herself to come closer to us. We must make Mami ready for that.

When we get along to infohazards, the personal fulfillment benefit becomes active. Kyouko ultimately likes saving people. And the infohazards are one other thing she is suited to save girls from. Her hard head has a place on our 'bomb squad.' We need a pro to train her up a little, that's all.

[X] Make it about literally everyone getting a better life
--[X] Sabrina can't get the best life without help, also true for Kyouko. Is that a good trade?
[X] Sabrina needs access codes to the blanket fort (Make sure Yuma can hear this, so she can have an opportunity for fun replies.)
[X] If needed - play along with "debt" for now -
--[X] We can't talk about debt if we don't become specific!
--[X] We want her to write out a real future plan, one month, one year and five year snapshots of her goals.
--[X] What does she want to work at? This is a modern world, pick the job, the bank doesn't tell you what to do.
[X] Sabrina expresses the goal to bring magical girls together without anger, competition, or fear over what will happen tomorrow. Help us make this life into a celebration. We want Kyouko and Yuma at that party.
[X] Offer to unload at least some of the new Grief Seed's burden, if Kyouko isn't comfortable with Clearing it. Having some more cleansing margin is just good safety, we can say to her. Observe the name and circumstance of the Witch.

* At an intermediate future point, we will need personnel capable of arresting another girl's Grief spiral, and bringing them into treatment. And those girls might be nicknamed "the bomb squad."

Er, I don't think giving Kyouko homework will go well.

We can push Kyouko to think about the future more without coming across as a big no-fun stick in the mud.

Well, it is possible to make a laser that excites any surface it is shone on to the point it lights up.

Ofc, that is limited to line of sight applications, and most of the cases the light generated is also proportional to the heating which means you've got a very destructive lighting method.

And prone to accidentally blinding. Which is sorta counterproductive...

Thought- Sabrina does need friends, since if she has no friends she becomes solely about her mission. Remember everything with us saying as much to Mami?

Sabrina without friends would be alive but would not be living.

We would be a moderately healthier Homura.

[X] It comes back around to that, huh? What I want in return. Alright, I'll tell you.
-[X] I want to be able to hang out with my friends, with them safe and happy and able to live their lives, rather than needing to risk their lives all the time just to survive. I want hunting to be something that we do together, to keep everyone safe. I want to cook a big damn feast and invite all my friends over and enjoy life. That sort of thing is why I made my wish -- I want to be able to do that.
--[X] And that is why I'm going to tell you that with everything I know about you, everything that you've done, that place for 'people like you'? Is with the rest of my friends living instead of just surviving.
[X] So that's what I'm going to ask for. You want to repay me? I want you to fight to live, not just survive.
-[X] There's things you could help me with - of course there are, I'm just one person in the end. You know that Walpurgisnacht is coming. But I don't want you to do those things out of obligation, to pay a "debt". So give friendship and trust another chance. That's what I want as payment. Are you good for it, or what?

Slight edit of @Godwinson 's vote.

Because not-asking-asking for Kyouko to do stuff for us will make it seem like that has been Sabrina's motive all along for helping Kyouko, which is so disgustingly counterproductive that I kinda wish I could vote to expunge the thought from crossing Sabrina's mind in the update, since even hesitating on the topic can undermine the quest-long effort to finally help Kyouko in a meaningful, lasting way.

Whoever is driving the bus today, please keep our soon-to-be-former Witch passengers in mind. Vote some love that way, please? (This one might have Yuma-phobia instead of a negative fixation on us, making her amenable to experimentation someday soon?)

We can't disarm deeply seated thinking patterns in one blow for her. Kyouko has an unfortunate scar from her upbringing, well, we can discuss just one here. It leads her to easily equate "good" with "sacrifice." Lots of 'good' happening becomes scary, because there must be a person bearing the sacrifice for that. Sounds like her assumptions? We can provide counter-examples that are pleasant and healthy. Nagisa and her uncle Shin need to become more prominent to Kyouko, because they are also walking on the upward road she wants to continue on with Yuma. Finding people to share values with while going about life is a good sort of community? Once Kyouko gets this vibe, she will determine how to bring Yuma into the mix. OOC, It's a wonderful microcosm if that happens?
Telling her to live is fine, just as long as we understand it may not have much power from our voices. She is under cognitive tension, the type we should want to see, by caring for Yuma. Yuma needs Kyouko to be present. Kyouko has enmeshed Yuma's tragedy with her own, and has accepted her charge. Having Yuma by her side drives behavior that isn't self-destructive and short term.

That leads me to suggest a very concrete response to the "cost of charity" question. Something like "future planning homework" is both an obvious visible undermining of the notion of the exchange, but since it would actually be an onerous and painful thing to think about, it is also a significant act, one that is large enough to trade for. It is the kind of challenge only your best friends would proclaim.
@blast flame , does this explain my motive better?

If that isn't the best way, then making a defined swap is absolutely the most comfortable thing for Kyouko until we get closer. She doesn't want to be fenced in by her choices, making limits a sound way to talk. Which days will she help? How many tasks? In exchange for what payment, and not more?

From a cordial position such as we have now, this could be easy, and support the healthy part of Kyouko's pride. Salary-Onesan might be the right next step for her? She gets a place to call home, and the other trappings of normal life, in exchange for her work. Pretty much like everyone else? Hey, magic is a sector in the global economy!

This all rests on the profound practicality of Kyouko. One doesn't try to sway Kyouko, one puts the choices before her and she makes up her own mind. If we place good choices in front of her, minding that she has a few aversions, that's almost all we have to do. Once she is in our orbit frequently, Kyouko will present the opportunity to us. Telling her she belongs here is redundant, once she tries it out.

It'd be great to get her 100% on the team today, and girls who aren't Kyouko would be. As long as she stays healthy, I'd like to prioritize bringing her in on her own best terms. That may take more time. We'll have to figure out the best way to ask Mami eventually. If we want an expert opinion on Kyouko, only two people have what it takes. Either Yuma or Mami could properly vette our intentions, so I'm expecting us to start an arc where we figure out how to let Mami detoxify her emotions over her lost kouhai.

I understand your desire to make kyouko think about her future, I just don't agree with it (in that form at least).

We are Kyouko's friend - not her mom, not her teacher, not her guardian. Asking someone to write an essay about their future plans is not what friends do, even if they're owned a favour.

Now if you were to try to get Kyouko to think about her future more now that she's got cleansing the "friend" way of doing that would be to get her to promise to think about her future more and offer to be an open ear to any thoughts she ends up having. No essay, no deadline - because essays and deadlines aren't the sort of thing that friends impose on friends. Because she's our friend as we can rely upon her to keep her word and do it without an easily assessable outcome.

Nova Prospekt pt. 14
You fall silent for a second, mulling it over. For Kyouko, it all comes back to a matter of repayment. Because she's prickly and prideful and all that, and doesn't want to accept charity. And... like she said, she doesn't know how to ask for help any more.

"What I want..." you say, and trail off, shaking your head. You lean back on the sofa, burrowing into the nice soft cushions for a moment as you rethink that. "Y'know. Before I answer, can I just..."

"Sure, sure, whatever," Kyouko says, flapping her hand aimlessly in your general direction, darting a glance at the bathroom. You can hear splashing noises from inside. She nods, and kicks back, propping her feet up on the coffee table.

"Yeah, OK, so... look," you say slowly. "I want to make a point, first. Obviously, the church means a lot to you."

"Obviously," Kyouko grunts.

"Mm," you say. "And I understand that. But for me-"

"Yeaaah lemme stop you right there," Kyouko says, rolling her eyes. "Yeah, it's worth jack shit to you. Y' think I'm stupid?"

"Not at all, actually," you say, folding your hands on your lap. "It's not worth nothing. It's worth my friend's happiness. Yeah, I'm hammering on that particular note, and yeah, me saving it was... I mean, c'mon, I run into a girl named Nakano and she just so happened to be the heiress of Nakano Corporation or something? What were the chances? But that's besides the point."

You meet Kyouko's eyes squarely.

"I'd have done a hell of a lot more to help you," you say.

"Yeah, yeah," Kyouko says, looking away. "Get on with it."

"Mm. Well... it comes back to what you can do to repay me, huh?" you say. "Then what I want is really simple. I want to be able to hang out with my friends. With everyone safe and happy and able to live their lives, rather than need to risk their lives all the time just to survive."

You lean forward, staring at Kyouko. She doesn't look at you, instead scowling at the blank screen of the television, but you focus your attention on her anyway. You want to get through to her, you want her to understand where you're coming from.

"We shouldn't have to hunt Witches to survive," you say. "It should be something we do together, to keep people safe, and I want to cook a big damned feast and invite all my friends over and, and just enjoy life with everyone. That is why I made my Wish. Well, that sort of thing, anyway. I want to be able to do that."

"Yeah, you're a regular saint," Kyouko grouses, patting her costume down and scowling even harder when she comes up empty. She hops to her feet and wanders over to the fridge, returning with a pair of popsicles, one of which she flips towards you. "What's your point?"

"Simple," you say, catching the ice pop and pointing it at her for emphasis. She unwraps her own and takes a bite, unimpressed. "With everything I know about you, everything you've done, that place for 'people like you'? Is with the rest of my friends living instead of surviving."

Her eyes flicker towards you, anger sparking, but you barrel onwards.

"So, yeah!" you say, waving the ice pop at her. "That's what I want. You want to repay me? I don't want you to fight my enemies, or give me something, or anything for that. I want you to fight to live, not just survive. That's what I want as payment. Are you good for it, or what?"

Kyouko flips you the middle finger, and you raise your eyebrow at her.

"Piss off with that challenge," Kyouko says. "Piss off with- I know what I deserve." She closes her eyes, and sighs. "Whatever. Fine. Gimme specifics. What do you want."

"I..." you say, and chuckle. "You're not really getting it. It's not about what I want, it's about what you want. Somewhere proper to stay for starters, maybe? I mean, I'm sure the hotels are great, and you don't have to clean up or anything, but you're always having to move around, yeah?"

"It's a living," Kyouko says, and shrugs.

"Is it, though?" you say. "Wouldn't you rather have a place to call home?"

"I have a home," Kyouko says quietly. She folds her arms, tilting her chin challengingly at you. "And I think there's a little bit of a problem with me 'hanging out with all your friends'."

... you walked right into that.

"Um... Big sis?" Yuma's voice echoes from the bathroom.

"What?" Kyouko asks, not taking her eyes off you.

"Yuma has, um, there's a little problem?" Yuma calls.

Kyouko makes an annoyed sound, taking an impatient bite of her popsicle and hopping to her feet. You swallow the relief bubbling up in your chest - saved, for the moment. At least you get to think a bit. You lean back on the sofa as Kyouko heads over to the bathroom.

"What is it- what the fuck?" Kyouko squawks. You twist about, and raise your eyebrows at the pile of bubbles you can see spilling out of the now-open door and into the corridor. Kyouko skitters back, away from the slowly growing puddle and trying to avoid getting any on her feet.

... OK, you have a biiiiit more time to think. Just a bit.

Can we please just use this to push her to talk to Mami? It's enough of a thing to satisfy her little complex over this without being harmful to our long term relationship.
