I don't think he does. Someone trying to learn something is not a reason not to be silly. People learn just fine in goofy environments as long as the goofiness doesn't conflict with the learning. The Schoolhouse Rock people didn't sit down and say "okay, let's make these songs solemn, we don't want to distract from the educational message".

If it was literally anyone else I'd agree with cheering for Sayaka, but I don't think Mami would take not being cheered for well.
Schoolhouse Rock isn't trying to teach you how to not die. So far we've been nonchalant, even flippant, about being a Puella Magi, playing with our powers, cracking jokes during Witch hunts, etc. That's fine with Mami and Homu-mama, who are both well aware of the stakes and are veterans in their own right, but if we keep this up around Sayaka she's going to get her head bitten off, and it'll be our fault for not stressing that this shit can and will kill you if you're not wary. Our flippancy and casual showing off is a big reason Sayaka contracted in the first place; let's not compound our error by making training seem like Art club.

As for cheering, Mami doesn't really need encouragement right now. Right now she's teaching a junior how to fight; this is practically her calling. Complimenting her after the fact, though, that would be good.

Well, OK.

[X] Cheer for Mami, but cheer for Sayaka whenever she does something cool.
-[X] Consult Madoka as to the quality of the seatings you provided.
[X] Afterwards, if Sayaka brings up copying your powers, make sure to have a Grief Seed in hand just in case, and try and see if you can will Grief to stop existing so you can have a non-too big amount of Grief when Sayaka does copy your powers.
[X] Before going Witch Hunting, apologize, but you'd rather not bring Madoka and Hitomi for something so dangerous.
-[X] Hug Madoka goodbye and see if you can get one from Hitomi, too.
-[X] Remind them of the picnic!

This. We cannot outrigh tell her that she signed her own death sentence, so we can do the next best thing and try to make her better trained while stressing the stakes at hand and not encouraging new contracts.

I don't mind adding a line about thanking Mami after the training.

I'd mainly just like Sabrina not to spazz out and make a huge joke about this with fake microphones and announcing the match like it's some kind of game. It's not a game, and Sayaka's life might someday hang on how much she can learn here. I don't want Sabrina to not be Sabrina... cheering and encouraging Sayaka sounds great. But let's encourage Sayaka to take this seriously and concentrate.

We probably should shift into a serious mood for the witch fight, at least.

And for now... [ ] Watch out for stray shots/swords?

Right. And Sayaka should know how to track witches via soul gem, right?

[X] Wait, first things first.
-[X] Grief microphone prop
--[x] "In the blue corner, we have the Knight of Justice, the up and coming, Miki Sayaka! In the yellow corner, we have the Ribbon Musketeer, the coolest senpai around, Tomoe Mami!"
--[X] "Let's get ready to ruuumbleeee!"
[X] Cheer for Mami. And Sayaka. But mostly Mami.
[X] Ask for Madoka's feedback and suggestions regarding chair design.

Can't we just watch them fight? And not be a random weirdo for the sake of being a random weirdo?

And that second part of that other vote thinking it necessary to explicitly make sure that Sabrina isn't distracting. We really are becoming a caricature of ourselves.:V
Ugh, so much this. I mean, Sayaka Contracted at least partly because we spent so much time playing around, making magic look like a great way to just get a straight power boost. Does she actually have to die before we stop dicking around, or are we going to keep joking around until Madoka Contracts?

Everyone in our peer group knows that magic is serious business. Sayaka contracted because we left her alone after an experience that showed her how serious that business is, not because she thought contracting would be a bundle of laughs. Sabrina is not serious business, but our friends can tell the difference between Sabrina and magic.

No she contracted because she felt like she owed Sabrina something for saving her life. 'I wanted to be useful.'

That is true. Still being positive is one thing, but using Sabrina's powers in such a casual manner is setting a bad example. Both for Sayaka, who does not have unlimited magic and needs to learn to watch her grief, and for Madoka and Hitomi and how cool Sabrina is making it seem to be a magical girl.

I mean, look at the most recent update:

...
"Hey, wait, wait!" you call. A flicker of will brings Grief sweeping in, streaming aware from the spheres to form three chairs. You take a moment to add arm and backrests, contoured for proper lumbar support and everything. Each one floats half a meter above the ground - one each for Madoka, Hitomi, and yourself.

Madoka eyes the chair with an eager look, hopping onto it and reclining against the back with a happy sigh. "This is a nice chair," she says.

Yeah sure they did need a place to sit, but that was making a show of it. Showing how powerful and awesome it is to be a magical girl and be able to just make whatever you want whenever you want. That wasn't a vote; Firnagzen wrote her acting like that because that's how the thread has established she acts.

Maybe it's time to pull back on that some; not always be so showy.

EDIT: Don't take the tragic path of being a cool magical girl like me, Madoka. Sure I'm awesome and happy and have vast magical powers, but you totally don't need any of that. Just keep being your lame ordinary self while Sayaka and I do all the important shit. <---- What Madoka sees.

I was tricked (or, in Sabrina's case, forced) into making my soul a rock and I have to fight big scary monsters, but I'm putting on a brave face and trying to enjoy what I can. <---- What Madoka sees.

How sure are you of this fact? How much are you willing to bet on this fact? Is there proof of this fact?

Not saying that we should become Focused McSeriousFace, but toning things down when in front of the yet-to-be-damned sounds like a good idea.
She saw Mami and Sabrina after the soul reveal and when Sayaka contracted. I'd put money on it. Not a lot, this is just a game, but maybe like five bucks.

Hmm. I was thinking about the best approach, and... can't we just tell Mami that we're gonna encourage Sayaka to build up her confidence?

[X] Telepathy Mami. Let her know that since Sayaka's inexperienced and could use the extra confidence before a witch hunt, we'll cheer for her.
-[X] Cheer for just Sayaka. Mami is the professional player about to coach an amateur, and it would be terribly bad manners to cheer for her. You don't want to come off as a jerk!
--[X] When Mami inevitably wins, tell her how cool whatever she pulled off was. (Assuming she actually pulls something cool off, but c'mon, of course she will.)

I got rid of the game announcer intro since it was contentious, but I'll say this: I don't think being silly is bad before the spar, as long as we give Sayaka and Mami our attention. During the spar is an entirely different matter, which is why I can't support the chair vote. No matter how you slice it, talking to Madoka about chairs means ignoring Sayaka and Mami while we should be offering our post-spar advice - or, even worse, during the spar itself.

See, that sounds good to me. I'll vote for that.

I thought she contracted because she wanted to have a way to repay her debt to Hitomi without giving up on Violin Boy (whose's name I don't rember)?

Like anyone making a big decision, I'm sure Sayaka had multiple factors influencing her.

I think the root of it was that she wanted power. Power to pay back her debt and power to make a difference. Her actual wish was something along the lines of, "I want to be able to do something." if I recall correctly. That gives you an idea where her head is.

I think that's an extremely dangerous example for Madoka, by the way. Back in the original canon series, part of what kept her from wishing was not being sure what her wish actually was. Now Sayaka has demonstrated that being a magical girl can be an end in itself and you can just use your wish to be a better magical girl. Sayaka and Sabrina.

Why exactly shouldn't Madoka make a contract and join her friends in protecting the world? Because she's afraid of personal sacrifice, or putting her soul in a rock or turning into a witch? Come on, this is a girl who is willing to sacrifice herself. We know that about her. Madoka can be saved only by convincing her that her sacrifice is unnecessary, not that the sacrifice is too great.

I don't think anyone ever told Madoka that she will destroy the world/create the Devil if she contracts.

Honestly, it's kind of difficult to convince her of not going Madokami. In her eyes, she is someone who has much more potential in aiding others through her wish than as a normal girl, which is not helped by the fact that, indeed, her magic potential is absurdly high and she could basically rewrite reality if she wanted to.
