Date Night (Canon)
Date Night

If there was one thing Galvin had learned in his years as a mercenary, it was that preparation was the most instrumental aspect of any successful plan. And his preparations tonight were more perfect than anything he'd ever put together prior. Reservations at the restaurant had been made and confirmed, the flowers had arrived in beautiful condition alongside a heart shaped box of chocolates, and his best outfit still fit perfectly. And to top it all off, he was fully ready a full hour in advance.

A knock on the door stopped his self-congratulatory back patting and made him a bit confused. Opening it a crack to peek out, Galvin grew both infinitely calmer and infinitely more nervous when he saw it was just Silas.

"What do you want old man?" he asked tersely, eager to get the conversation over with and get back to being perfectly ready for his date with Cheriss.

"Nice to see you too." said Silas, acting more offended than he probably was before sighing. "Chora and I are off to invite Senator Chuchi to Ciaran's coup meeting. We can't take Oki with us though, and someone has to watch her. So be a good cousin and watch her for me, okay?"

Galvin opened the door farther, and saw Oki sulking beside Silas. Seeing his look of irritation, his Clawdite 'cousin' was quick to defend herself. "Don't look at me, it was his idea. I wanted to go along, but nooooo."

"The last thing we need in a diplomatic meeting is an underage changeling." said Silas to Oki before turning back to Galvin. "So anyways, here you go. You two behave yourselves now." Silas shoved Oki through the door past Galvin and slammed it shut in the Zeltron's face. Galvin furiously opened the door to give the old man a piece of his mind, but Silas was gone upon opening the door.

Growling in frustration, he turned to look at Oki, who had made herself comfortable on his couch. "Oh hey, chocolate." She said, reaching for the box.

"Touch it and I shoot you." he warned. Oki retracted her hand like she had touched a burning hot pan.

"Alright alright, jeez. Didn't know you loved chocolate that much." said Oki, rolling her eyes in exasperation.

"They're not for me. They're a gift for Cheriss." Said Galvin, moving the box of chocolate to a more out of the way location. Giving it another second's thought, he moved the flowers as well.

"Who, the Togruta scientist girl? You two are a couple?" asked Oki. "Oh, the flowers were for her too. I just thought your interior decorating skills were as terrible as your fashion sense. If you're trying to impress her, you might want to be presentable for the general public as a baseline."

Galvin glared at his younger cousin. "Nothing will make me happier than going to the restaurant and leaving you here."

"If you leave me, I'll tell Silas." threatened Oki. The worst part was that Galvin didn't know her well enough to figure out if she was serious.

Glaring at an unperturbed Oki, Galvin called up the restaurant. "Hi, Galvin Thorn, I have a reservation in about an hour. How much would it be to add another person? That much?! No no, I understand why, it's just… Yes, alright." Galvin hung up. "The old bastard owes me a lot of credits for this."

Cheriss looked across the candlelit table at Galvin. When he had invited her over, she hadn't expected much out of the ordinary, but she had been proven wrong and showered with flowers, sweets, and whisked away to a ridiculously fancy restaurant. It had been more than she had anticipated in every way.

Including the number of people present. Oki had been quiet and out of the way, true to her word at the beginning of their…. their date. But it was still somewhat distracting to have someone else intently watching them from the side of the table. She was awkward enough on regular dates, she didn't need this added variable.

Galvin could see her beginning to panic, and he reached across the table to grab her hand. "Hey, calm down. It's just us, on a date. No big deal."

"Yeah, no big deal." Oki chimed in.

"Quiet, you." Snapped Galvin, not even looking in her direction. Oki shrugged, and returned to her own food. The soothing words and contact with Galvin worked, and Cheriss did calm down significantly.

The date progressed exceedingly well from that point on, even if any more risqué behavior was curtailed by Oki's presence. By the time Silas came to get her in the morning, Galvin was just about ready to shoot the both of them.

AN: Happy Valentine's Day. Just remember that even when you're not dating them, your cousins will cockblock you.

oh yes...
the younger sibling cockblock maneuver, i remember it well....

I'm not joking. I think it would be a fitting tribute
I appreciate the gesture (I think?) but it's hardly necessary.

A better compliment/tribute might be to show up when I start my own Star Wars quest in the future. It's still in the outlining/planning phase, but I'm pretty pleased with how it's shaping up -- though given my total inexperience with running a quest, I'd appreciate volunteers for beta readers. (Also, if @Panory wants to sign up as co-author...)

It was basically inspired by my survey of the wiki, and finding all these amazing sites/artifacts/backstories/etc. that we could discover & exploit... only to realize that due to the (entirely understandable) limitations of this quest, we can't just go off to explore every corner of the galaxy but have to focus on fighting the Big Bad. It was especially inspired by my discovery of just how many Force sects exist in the SW galaxy, and while we might start to draw them together under our leadership in this quest, I'd kinda like to see an entire quest fccused on that specifically.

So, big picture: main character is a Force User (first vote would be to identify who & when) who goes around the galaxy in the lead-up to the Clone Wars exploring the galaxy, discovering & claiming pretty much everything, making allies of various Force sects, and ultimately forming his/her own (non-Jedi) Order. Part of the quest would be establishing the main character's motivations for taking this step, which would tie in to the new Order's nature and structure. (For instance, one big motive might be 'opposition to slavery', in which case part of the new Order's remit would be proactively going out to end slavery wherever it finds them. Another motive might be 'disgust with Senate's corruption', in which case the new Order might act more like pre-Ruusan 'Jedi Lords' and establish themselves as local political authorities...).

If anyone's interested in learning more... I'm not really sure. Would it be better to keep using this thread for that discussion, or to start a different thread elsewhere just for brainstorming and feedback?

considering all he's/she's/it's/Apache attack helicopter's done for this thread.
"He" works. :)

I'm honestly not sure, but I don't really see the harm in giving it a try when the time comes around.
Huh. That just happened. I mean, I mentioned it as a pipe-dream, given how much you've contributed to this thread and how much I enjoy your writing style, but if you're willing to give it a shot...

I'm pretty sure there's an Idea thread for star wars somewhere around here and agood one like yours will surely get attention, expecially from those who know just how much worldbuilding (or world indexing, since it already existed) you have done. Otherwise there's the general idea thread. Anyway, I'll be sure to partecipate, if and when you give it a try. The only suggestion I would give is to prepare and keep a more charcter driven storyline to mix with the exploration, because from what I've seen exploration quests tend to degrade into shopping lists of "let's go to planet x and get the y shiny" unless voters feel personally involved with the player character.

Edit: to avoid double postings, here's a thing I did.

All I Ever Wanted

"Master Skywalker. There are too many of them. What are we going to do?"

You don't answer, but instead draw your lightsaber and move slowly enough to let the children understand you're going to kill them and let yourself feel their horror at your betrayal in the Force, no matter how strangely muted it has been since you've entered the room. Then the Force screams in warning and you turn around, ready to deflect the blaster shot back at whatever pathetic fool is trying to stop you. As the green blast flies back to its origin, you get a look at the shooter: female, dressed elegantly, with a smirk on her face and two guns in her hands- Ciaran? You barely manage to get an impression of a second figure swatting away the blaster bolt with a lightsaber before the sonic wave from the second gun hits you like a speeding transport and you lose consciousness.

When you come to, you almost think you're allucinating from the pain, because you see the last of the younglings being escorted out by stormtroopers. You take a second to look at your attackers and then everything becomes red again as the Dark Side roars in your ears: Ventress! Every thought of annoying Miraluka slips from your mind as all your world focuses on killing your hated enemy and you try to jump on your feet, only to collapse back down with a strangled cry.

"Oh, you're already awake?" That treacherous blind witch's voice sounds out as you grind your teeth and focus all your hatred to give you the power to stand. "I must admit I'm impressed, Anakin: not only that gun was a custom made model created to stop a charging Bantha and yet you managed to survive it even with all the bones in your body broken, but somehow you're able to use the Force even inside the Ysalamiri field."

"Shut. Up." You groan out, calling to your pain, your suffering, to power through this and kill your enemies. For her. "Always talking, scheming, but... to cover your weakness. You have no power!" It doesn't work: even if you can feel it burning through your veins giving you infinite power, the Dark Side doesn't respond to your calls to let you stand, nor does it rip your lightsaber from her hands.

She looks at you with pity and it makes you even more furious. "It's really like they said in the holocrons, isn't it Asajj? The Dark Side: not even once."

"No, he's just taking to it like a wimp." That Sith bitch voice is cold and for a moment you almost like her better for it.

"Oh. Well, I imagine you're the expert in this." Ciaran catches your gaze and then looks down to your lightsaber even as you realise she isn't wearing her blindfold- weren't Miralukas blind? "You know, I was thinking of giving this back to Padmé, or maybe your children when they grew up." You freeze as uncomprehension blanks your mind for a second- she knew- children? "But I've just been told we've arrived a little too late and three young ones were found in the halls, killed by lightsaber strikes. So, I'm gonna do this instead." She throws your blade away without care and Ventress destroys is with a flick of her own, murmuring.

"Wouldn't want kids growing up with a murder weapon in their hands."

You're still trying to make sense of what they said when a foot rolls you on your back.

"Now, it's time to tie up the last loose end of this whole debacle." Ciaran looks into your eyes and for the first time you see them as cold and steely as those of your Master, before they warm a little bit even as she draws a gun. A Mandalorian disintegrator. "It's quite sad that no matter how many pushes and talks I gave you, you'll still die a slave, kid." A sigh you can't quite bring yourself to believe is fake. "I'd like to give you a chance, really, but in my organisation we have rules about rabid dogs."

"P-Padmé..." At the very least, you can die thinking of the only good thing in your life.

"Is a dear friend and deserves better. Sweet dreams, Ani."

-

Ciaran's steps were sure and steady as she left the room asking for an update while a group of Watchers took away the Ysalamir and she put her blindfold back on. Things had come to a head much faster than expected and the Abyss Watchers had almost been too slow to react. Still, all the more sensible Jedi had teams ready to extract them from the Clone Army's assault and in time they could be reunited with the younglings and Padawans to form a more reasonable Order- the original Jedi Code unearthed by the operation on Tython held much potential.

She still waited news from Gunray after her hurried message to stage the legal coup they had planned since Dooku's death and Tann's unpopular rise to power, but with Thrawn there she didn't foresee any problem they coudn't handle.
It was really a shame the Jedi strike team hadn't managed to kill Palpatine, but the latest reports had Master Yoda, Mundi, Ti and Obi Wan en route to Coruscant and a brief immersion in the Force told her their course wouldn't change: after seeing the recordings, Obi Wan would follow her to find answers and the children, while the rest would confront Sidious again. HK-47, the Silencer and a judicious number of assassins with sonic weaponry would ensure the "Emperor" wouldn't walk away from the encouter alive.

Meanwhile, she had to get back to the Oracle and keep Padmé from going spare long enough to guarantee a safe delivery of the children (and honestly, nobody thought the Miraluka may have noticed those little supernova of Force power growing inside her best friend?) and then keep her busy enough not to fall into depression when Anakin's crimes and demise came to light. Maybe she could put Dr. Razon as her secretary? The woman had done excelent work as the Watchers' head psychologist and could keep an eye open when Ciaran couldn't.

At least the Republic would more or less fall on its feet, with the Alliance for the Restoration of the Republic she had put together ready to take the reins in the Senate.

And thus Darth Traya strode out of the emptying Jedi Temple, with the corpses of brainwashed and free stormtroopers laying around her, giving little thought to the body of the little boy from Tattooine she was leaving behind.

In fact, there already exists such a thread for questing in general! It's stickied at the top of this forum.

People usually give good advice there. If nothing else, it it fantastic for gauging interest; I've seen people actually play out a few preliminary updates to gauge how engaged people are, and if you ask for responses you can often get somebody to help out with idea-crafting. And once you've done that, another stickied thread is there for player recruitment. Our overlords are wise and benevolent and have provided resources for us to succeed. :D

If you want a thread just to discuss this one idea, Creative Discussion and Worldbuilding is probably the right place for it.

Quite good, but I really, really hope this is non-canon, for obvious reasons (though such precautions are acceptable and reasonable).

1. really want to have multi-tagging option
2. Where's the fun in separating story and worldbuilding??

2) Turns out there's an abandoned museum/Jedi library right next door.
It is orbited by 'Space City' once regarded as one of the twenty 'Wonders of the Galaxy'
I want it. Specifically, I wonder if we could use it as a galactic museum: to celebrate Ciaran's accomplishments, celebrate the cultures and systems that belong to the CNS and/or the Outer Rim, to celebrate & showcase our own archaeological discoveries (at least the ones that are public record...)
So what I'm hearing is... you want to steal relocate, repair and refurbish the biggest art gallery in the galaxy?

That high-pitched squeeing sound in the distance? Preeetty sure that's Thrawn. :p

Man, the guy must be having the time of his life with us. Let's just think about the ways we've done a solid one for him, shall we?

*Got him off the primitive planet he was stuck on.
*Don't give a shit that he's not a human. Treat him with respect.
*He gets a job that will make use of his best skills. He gets to do what he is good at. (Military, fleet, etc.)
*He gets to expand his skills too, being challenged in new and interesting ways. (Commando raids, Tactical Espionage Operations, public relations.)
*He gets to hang out with some interesting and skilled people, or to go and meet interesting people across the galaxy. (Ciaran, Grievous, Jango.)
*We have a goddam Trophy Room.
*An important and critical goal; we're trying to keep the galaxy from going to shit, by opposing a shadowy Sith conspiracy.

I suppose we could instead have been a beautiful Chiss instead of a Miraluka/Human, could have been running a galactic-wide art/museum organization instead of a criminal/intelligence/political/medical mashup, and we could have waved a magic wand and magically rescinded his exile... but that's about the only way things could have gone better for him, haha.

Thrawn really landed on his feet here. :p

[ ] Special action: Have Thrawn study the art gallery. Slight chance (99%) for Thrawn not to be available next turn.
You know at first I laughed but then I thought: "Wait, wouldn't that have the art styles of damn near every civilization?"

So, uh... It would actually work? It'd basically double as a way of analyzing the art of tons of cultures, giving him insight into many cultures.

Yes. And if the QM takes it seriously, Thrawn will be stuck in the gallery until he rolls a natural 100.

Assuming @Dr. Snark doesn't have a problem with it, could you link it in this thread when it happens?
With Dr. Snark's permission, of course. :)

Good point -- I could easily see 'explore' devolving to that. I did already have a character-driven plot outlined, but I'll make sure to give it more attention.

That's true and insightful but I can't help but think of two terribly unfitting things here: that Meme where a guy is trying to push Ciaran and Thrawn action figures together yelling 'KISS' and, from those Jojo Omakes, Thawn appreciating Rohan's manga to the point him and Rohan are equally artgasming.

@Dr. Snark, I just discovered not one, but TWO new bonuses hiding out in the last thread. Yeah, no kidding.

Bonus #1: during the Separatist Crisis right before the start of the Clone Wars (immediately after the Granta Omega attack on the Senate) we made contact with the Jedi Sentinels, specifically assigning Silas Cata to smooth things over.
[X] Aid the Sentinels: The Jedi Sentinels and Investigators have covertly requested your aid to put them into contact with your various information since due to the Separatist Crisis things have gotten a lot worse and they see you as the most reliable ally they can find. Ensure that they get the aid they want. Chance of Success: 70% Reward: Possible increase in Jedi Diplomatic status, ?
Required: 30 Rolled: 90+5+5+11=111
See Interlude: 'One step away...'
And we rolled a super-critical! Here's the text for that Interlude:
Coruscant
Silas meanwhile has been busy doing his best to charm himself into the Jedi Sentinels good graces by both supplying them with all the requested informations they required, but at the same time also portraying himself as a bumbling old man to seem more trustworthy. The fact that he actually is becoming a bumbling old man due to his age finally catching up to him helps with that.

Regardless, after a few months the Abyss Watchers have become the Sentinels favorite source of information due to them being nearly always fully accurate and Silas has arranged for a information exchange with the understanding that any information is to aid the Watchers investigations into further issues, like Granta Omega.

Fortunately that paid off quickly and reinforced the Jedi's trust when your men actually became the first to track down where Granta Omega went by slicing into his communications once and alarmed the Sentinels that he intended to meet a Sith Lord on Korriban.
We got an 'in' with the Jedi Sentinels! You'd think that'd provide a pretty outstanding bonus. Sure enough:
Reward: +1 Diplomatic Status with the Jedi, +5 on Intrigue rolls for the next year
But here's the thing. That +5 modifier was never added to the front page, and in the confusion of the Clone Wars officially beginning at the same time, that default bonus was never applied to any of the Intrigue actions we took over the next four turns. Then Dr. Snark took over, and things moved to a new thread. In other words, we have so far received no tangible benefits from this connection, an ongoing 'information exchange' with the Jedi Sentinels.

Consider this as well:
  • One of those Jedi Sentinels (named J'oopi Shé) is a member of the secretive'Republic Group' (mentioned in my Briefing the Boss Pt. 3 omake)
  • The Republic Group has been investigating Separatist sympathizers in the Senate since the start of the Separatist Crisis
  • When we first starting working with the Sentinels, we had compiled a list of Separatist sympathizers (a list we shared with Padme)
  • Just after the Clone Wars began, Senator Onaconda Farr released a 'List of 245' such Separatist sympathizers -- this was how he won a seat on the Loyalist Committee, by exposing the CIS ties of one of the original sitting members.
  • The Republic Group almost certainly provided Senator Farr with that List
  • Given the information exchange, it's entirely likely that the Abyss Watchers were the original source of the Republic Group's information.
So yeah, for something that's had no mechanical benefit for this quest whatsoever, this seems to be a pretty huge deal!

My question for @Dr. Snark: can we re-add that +5 Intrigue bonus this turn? Perhaps you could tie it in with the anti-Palpatine meeting -- Senator Fang Zar (leader of the Republic Group) might stick around afterward, to communicate his gratitude for our earlier help, and offer the aid of his Republic Group to give us access to Republic intelligence sources. Or perhaps he's willing to put us back in contact with the Jedi Sentinels via his ally J'oopi She. (At which point we realize, huh, we've been providing them with information for the past two years, but haven't received any intel or taken advantage of the 'exchange' we had agreed, and perhaps now is a good time to start treating their intel as a major asset for our own operations...).

Either way, that +5 Intrigue bonus is long overdue.

Also, considering it is an ongoing "information exchange" arrangement, and considering our diplomatic status with the Jedi Order (7/10 with the Order as a whole, probably a bit more for the Sentinels specifically considering they specialize in morally gray intelligence operations), I'd argue that the information exchange should be a long-term default bonus. Perhaps if we score an Intrigue crit, or somehow prove that we'll use the Sentinels' intel in an ethical way (such as, I don't know, learning about a major Separatist bioweapon on Honoghr and rushing to fix the crisis...) I could easily see the Sentinels deciding to make it a more permanent arrangement.

Bonus #2: speaking of close collaboration with the Jedi...
[X] Investigate Omega: It appears the Jedi know who is behind the assassination on Palpatine and are trying to find him. You meanwhile have your own reasons to try to figure out what is going on, since you want to know if the assassination has any connection to what you are investigating. It appears it is time to annoy Kenobi again. May the Force have mercy on him since you won't. Chance of Success: 70% Reward: Informations
Required: 30 Rolled: 78+5+5+38=126
See Interlude: 'One step away...'
Same turn, separate action, new roll giving an even greater critical success, to be revealed in the same Interlude as before. And here was the reward:
Reward: +1 Diplomatic Status with the Jedi, possibility to get unrequested aid once per turn
But, just as with the Jedi Sentinels, that reward (again, for a super-critical success) has apparently had no effect on any later turns or future rolls.

To be fair, during that same Interlude with the hunt for Granta Omega, we did also save that life of Jedi Padawan Darra Thel-Tanis, setting up up our recruitment of her as a 'Hero Unit' the following turn. Yet even then it required a separate action with a separate super-critical roll of its own, merely to:
'Gained Hero: Darra Thel-Tanis'... Kinda.
And that "kinda" was borne out by the fact that we lost her a few turns later due to a Disaster roll. All that to say: Darra's involvement & recruitment were not rewards for this Interlude, but came from something else. That means that the only reward-- for a super-crit that ensured the survival of all the Jedi who pursued Omega to Korriban -- was a basic +1 Diplomatic Status with the Jedi, and the "possibility to get unrequested aid once per turn"

My question for @Dr. Snark: is that 'possibility of unrequested aid' from the Jedi still part of the quest? Is it a 'behind the scenes' roll, like our CNS Integration Bureau 'recruitment rolls', or our salvage rolls in previous turns? If it isn't, can you make this reward fit within your current big-picture plans and re-add it as a quest mechanic?

Or, failing any of that, can you clarify if there's some other Jedi-related reward that we would/should have received for our super-crit on Korriban?

Finally, all of this (the collaboration with the Sentinels, and the hunt for Granta Omega) started as a result of this:
Attack on the Senate: 21 Senators have been killed by a terrorist attack on the Senate with Palpatine, who only barely escaped, as the likely target. Due to a general agreement that the attack was likely planned and executed by Separatist-aligned factions Palpatine has been reluctantly granted Emergency Powers as part of the new Emergency Powers Act due to the clear threat the Separatists pose and to avoid a political mess that his stepping down from his position due to his second term running out would cause at this point.
It turns out that the attack was orchestrated by not one but two terrorists:
According to this and this, the Emergency Powers Act was passed in 24 BBY in canon following an attack by Granta Omega and Jenna Van Arbor on the Senate Building, killing 21 Senators and 24 aides/guards.
Do we know what happened to Jenna Van Arbor? She was responsible for attacking the Senate, but wasn't mentioned in the follow-up action or the Interlude where we pursued Granta Omega to Korriban. Van Arbor is a pretty stereotypical 'mad scientist' with a passion for bioweapons, so I can think of lots of plot potential here. Perhaps she was responsible for the THX 1138 bioweapon that spilled on Honoghr? Or perhaps we could search for her like we're searching for the Kaminoan scientist Ko Sai -- someone to capture for the sake of improved medical research. Again, lots of plot hooks. Or we could just decide to end her like we did for Granta Omega.
