Lights... Camera... ACTION!!: A Hollywood Quest

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
Hi Magoose here one of the guys helping Duke.

So we have some bad news.

The quest has been canceled as duke does not want to write it anymore.

I'm going to ask if I can take over for it, because I like this quest, and it would be a shame to kill it
TBF, Mags, you have been doing a lot of the heavylifting for the quest, so this will be in good hands. :)

To be clear to everyone, this is just me burning out on imagination of the quest, since my muse has been hitting me over the head a lot with so many different ideas that I just can't find myself too interested in this.

I'll still hang out here, though, since this still does have a sepcial place in my heart.

I'd like to thank you all for making this a wonderful experience while it lasted.

I'd also like to thank @Magoose, @Fluffy_serpent, and @Martin Noctis for doing so much to help prepare and write this quest. I couldn't have done it without you all. :D

I'll see you all around.

With so many regards, Duke William Of.

wich charlton are we talking about ?,there is a lot of company nammed charlton, and peoples.

Fine, I guess we can try and buy Charlton. But, we must still be willing to buy Marvel later on as well. Compromises are necessary to work this out.
God...Watchmen as a Marvel property, what a timeline we live in.

-[] Charlton Comics [ $10 Million ] We propose the acquisition of Charlton Comics by Lucasfilm, driven by the desire to gain access to their vast character library. With the purchase of Charlton Comics, we will inherit a treasure trove of unique and diverse characters, enriching our creative portfolio. This strategic move will allow Lucasfilm to expand our storytelling capabilities, tapping into the rich history and fan base of Charlton Comics. By integrating these beloved characters into our cinematic universe, we will captivate audiences with immersive narratives, spawning new franchises and fueling our continued success in the entertainment industry. Together, Lucasfilm and Charlton Comics will redefine the boundaries of storytelling and create unforgettable experiences for fans worldwide.
John Henry: Man of Steel
Starting this turn, I'd like to put forward the suggestion that we focus on following our acquisition of Charlton and/or Marvel, we start acquiring publishing companies overseas to have access to their character libraries to make it easier to distribute in those countries.

And considering our success with Miraculous, I think that we should start with Pilote for the rights to Asterix and Valerian.

Business Proposal: Acquisition of Pilote by Lucasfilm for Access to Character Library

-[] Pilote [ $15 Million ]: We propose the acquisition of Pilote, a prominent French comics company, by Lucasfilm, with the goal of gaining access to their valuable character library. By purchasing Pilote, we will unlock a wealth of unique and captivating characters, expanding our creative resources and storytelling potential. This strategic move will enable Lucasfilm to tap into the rich heritage of French comics and leverage the existing fan base to create compelling narratives and immersive experiences. With Pilote's character library integrated into our cinematic universe, we will entertain and engage audiences on a global scale, solidifying our position as a leader in the entertainment industry. Together, Lucasfilm and Pilote will forge new frontiers in storytelling, delivering unforgettable adventures to fans worldwide.
or
-[] Albert Uderzo, Astérix [ $5,000,000 ]: Initially something you'd read between takes on New Hope to practice your French, the series found a new life and appreciation for you as bedtime stories for Mary. Given the recent successes of Miraculous Ladybug and John Henry, now might be the perfect time to see about getting the adaption rights to Astérix.

I'd really rather not since I'm still trying to produce a last ditch hail mary pass to try and keep Charlton successful and not integrated into another comic company. I had a really fun comic event pitch planned and an omake from the employees at Charlton that I was going to start on after wrapping up my Pacific Rim omake. I know I've been pushing for Charlton for a long time now, but still, I'd rather we didn't.

Hmm...I'll pivot to a book publisher then.

By the way, was going to go with OTL standby Bantam, but they were just fully acquired by Bertelsmann this year, having started the buyout in '77. Which other publishers were we talking about maybe acquiring, or was it just that one?

I will agree with this, provided we don't stop with our future acquisition of Marvel. Plus, it would not be Watchmen per se, since those were created due to DC already being bought by DC.

You know, I can see Captain Atom being one of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s previous attempts at recreating Captain America but with Atomic energy, only to get out of control and needing it to be burid for his safety and the others as well.

I'd go more for Asterix than the others. I mean, don't get me wrong, they seem innovative, but Pilote just doesn't seem to have anything I like except from said comic.

Well, the Watchmen characters were basically one offs, yes, but they were all modified Charlton Comics characters, like I want to say that The Comedian was basically just a reskinned Peacemaker. So a What-If scenario wouldn't be too out of place here.

And yeah, I can see that with Captain Atom, but I can also see a Hulk alternative there...actually, I think that if we have Captain Atom we can pull a Sentry, and had him erased from the memories of the population for one reason or another.

Main reason I want to go for the full stack is that, beyond gaining a European publisher for our comics that would net us additional income, Star Wars didn't just take inspiration from Flash Gordon, there's some Valerian in there as well, and I can see George overjoyed to play around with it.

That's exactly what it was lol. Watchmen was made because after DC bought Charlton, they wanted a story made to introduce their readers to the characters, and while they liked what Alan Moore gave them, they thought it wouldn't work in the mainline comics, so they spun it off into it's own thing and it became The Watchmen.

You know, if we use them as was originally intended, then if we do a crossover event, we can have the events of Watchmen taking place during Secret Invasion to explaining why the Avengers and co. aren't there, and from there play around with one or two other ideas when the others get back.

And so the comic-book debacle continues. Like do we want a comic publisher or not? Because we have been debating sinds page 250~. So are we buying a company or are we waiting forever with the excuse 'that we one day might buy Marvel' or do we have an actual plan outside of vague ideas. Look I'm not a comic-book fan so the constant debate, delaying and strengtening of rival company's is a bit tiring.

I was actually going to do something else for Charlton. I'm planning out a Comic Event pitch for them to reset their universe by combining ideas from Crisis on Infinite Earths, Doomsday Clock, Watchmen, Monarch(as Captain Atom, not Hawk), and a couple of other things to create their own massive reset event. I think it's necessary narratively to help purge the rot at the company and start over from a better foundation. I'm also writing an omake where a couple employees talk about the problems at the company, the new big reset, as well as someone special coming in to help steer them creatively. A very special someone indeed who has been a fan of Charlton for quite some time. 😈
I think y'all will enjoy it.

If anyone manages to guess who it is, I'll give you an internet cookie🍪and you'll definitely be the coolest cat around, yup yup!

Dude, the company is in complete shambles, they are only publishing comics from one of their IPs (The Phantom), and their printing presses are obsolete...

Charlton has NO FUTURE as an independent comic publisher, it is going to be bought and integrated into another bigger company like Marvel or DC, or it will go bankrupt and its IPs will be auctioned.

And I personally would rather leave it for DC... Watchmen was created as it was due to a long list of difficult-to-replicate factors and coincidences, and I would rather leave it as it was so that things can happen naturally like OTL than risk it being butterflied away (or becoming a totally different comic book)...

ve it.
@Magoose confirmed that we would have our chance in the 80s... So we are aiming at Marvel...

Well, besides Asterix Pilote has also published some of the most influential masterpieces of the Bande Desinee like Blueberry, Valerian, and Lucky Luke...

Having said that @Orion Ultor I am pretty sure that in French Comics the Authors retain much more control of their own work than they do in the American Comics Industry, so by purchasing the publisher of a French album it is not guaranteed that we would also get the rights over the comic (an example of this is that in 1974 Goscinny and Uderzo decided to leave Pilote and they had no problems in publishing Asterix with their own editorial) ...

So better to negotiate with each author individually to avoid problems...

It is your time, so do whatever you want with it... But you have to admit that you are the only one in the thread who seems to care that much about Charlton, for the rest of us Charlton Comics is like Atari, a company in complete shambles not worth the time and effort to save them, that at best we may buy to salvage the little of value that they may have if they are cheap enough...

I'm reminded about this video. In europe the stories are more auther driven and less corperate driver. So if you want to buy a Franco-Belgian style comic publisher you better make peace with the authers and the public. Because nothing more makes Europeans rage when an american tries to buy a european cultural landmark doubly so if they were french.

But as a European who is a big fan of Franco-Belgian comics if we were to buy a company I highly recommend Dupuis, because they own a lot of varied stories for both family and teenagers and they tried despertly to animate their stories with little success and they also own The Smurfs and because they're belgian we won't offend the highly volitile french public.

As I said before, French and Belgian comic authors retain ownership of their creations (that is why it is pretty usual for a series to change the publisher several times), so buying a French/Belgian Comic editorial is not going to give the rights over most of the comics published there...

If we want to produce movies, animes, or cartoons based on French BD, we need to buy the rights directly from the authors...

Yes but authers don't change publishers willy-nilly either. We need to maintain a good relation with the publishers and the authers.
I am not that worried about the authors changing the publisher... But the adaptation rights are another thing entirely, we would need to buy those rights from each author individually, and the main reason why people want to buy a French Comic Publisher is mainly so that we can produce anime/cartoon adaptations of its most legendary albums (basically they think it will work like Marvel and by owning the publisher we get all its IPs)...

That is why I don´t think that buying a French/Belgian Comic Book Publisher is that interesting for us because we are here mainly for the adaptation rights and we won´t get them by buying a European comic book publisher...

We're at the point now where I'm telling you that I kindly don't give a fuck. You think I don't already have potential buyers lined up for my omake? That I haven't considered what is needed to steer a company like this back on track? You don't know what I'm doing or considering beyond what I tell you, so with all due respect, butt out because you don't know.

You caught me at a bad time. I just woke up after being unable to really sleep all week and only going to sleep around 5 am and then you hit me with this shit. Apologies for being so short with you, but dude, I don't fucking care. I'm perfectly fine with this being a me-project and I'm going to do the projects that interest me. I want Charlton to stay alive. I don't need any more reason than that to work on this endeavor, even if I do have deeper reasons, and you don't need to concern yourself with anything more than that. Especially if it bothers you that much.

Okay but how did Dupuis and other publishers make animated movies/shows and even video games? You're saying as if the rights are impossibly expensive when they should be pretty cheap, if a strugeling belgian publisher can afford to animate and mechendise them then Lucasfilm can too, and which auteur does not want their stories to be immortalised with film for an international audience. Also let's not undersell the value of these stories as is , they're decades old and even now they bring in a lot of money.

I am not worried about money at all, I am pretty sure that we could get the adaptation rights for many wonderful BDs for relatively cheap prices... However, I am much more worried about the AP cost because since most European Authors retain full ownership over their own work we are forced to negotiate the adaptation rights on an individual basis (even if they are enthusiastically willing to get the adaptation done), and if buying the Publisher doesn´t get us the adaptation rights it is a relatively wasted action.

Basically, if we want to produce the Smurfs Cartoon we should go directly to Peyo (and so forth), buying Dupuis simply adds an extra unnecessary action, and AP is pretty valuable.

The thing is that Dupuis and other publisher also want to animate and profit of their stories so if we cut them out that might make them mad. And I think that publisher own the merchendise rights or something so that's another source of revenue gone.
