Lights... Camera... ACTION!!: A Hollywood Quest

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
Hi Magoose here one of the guys helping Duke.

So we have some bad news.

The quest has been canceled as duke does not want to write it anymore.

I'm going to ask if I can take over for it, because I like this quest, and it would be a shame to kill it
TBF, Mags, you have been doing a lot of the heavylifting for the quest, so this will be in good hands. :)

To be clear to everyone, this is just me burning out on imagination of the quest, since my muse has been hitting me over the head a lot with so many different ideas that I just can't find myself too interested in this.

I'll still hang out here, though, since this still does have a sepcial place in my heart.

I'd like to thank you all for making this a wonderful experience while it lasted.

I'd also like to thank @Magoose, @Fluffy_serpent, and @Martin Noctis for doing so much to help prepare and write this quest. I couldn't have done it without you all. :D

I'll see you all around.

With so many regards, Duke William Of.

The best revenge we can have against Toho is...nothing.

Let them see our movies make hundreds of millions and our distributers make hundreds of millions of yens, let them see all that money, all those masterpieces, and know that they will never see a single cent/yen out of them. Let them see how utterly unimportant they are to us now as we move to victory as they are left behind.

And let's acquire Daiei while we're at it and get Gamera to become the new King.
Not really... Culturally speaking the best revenge would be to buy them, so that the directives weep on how a cursed gaijin now owns ther company... before degrading them and send them to work on a cubicle...

Which would be a complete waste of our time. We have better things to do than pursue revenge on a company that doesn't want to work with us anymore. They haven't actually wronged us like CBS or anything, they just pulled shady shit with the contract, but the only reason that was invoked in the first place was because we chose to try and pursue legal action. We brought it onto ourselves.

Well, they did try to take the Rights of Gundam.
"I saved out licensing with Sunrise, and Gundam." He said.

"I'm sensing a but." You stated as George just facepalmed.

He handed over a piece of paper, from Toho. "I'm guessing you can read this."

You looked at it, and paled. "You… You what?!"

"Well I did stop a hostile takeover from Toho… they just… didn't like that."

Their in the book of grudges. They must be punished 10 fold.

It also gives us the rights of plenty of movies and franchises, film sets in Japan, distribution deals through all Asia, and it serves as a warning for any future partners who decide to screw us over with shady contract stuff.

The Gist of Toho actions seems to be they done some shady contract work in prep to have their cake and eat it to.

And then Gundam happens, which led to Toho trying to buy out Sunrise to get the show for themselves, and Toho invoking their trick to cut our deal short. They are probably fuming at how Mike charged in and shut that nonsense over stealing Gundam out, even if they can console themselves over outmaneuvering us to access the full US market.

Ah, an overall glorious turn with one major screwup in it, classic Magoose Dice as always.

Turn 64 Results:

[X]The Lucasfilms Christmas Party of 1978: Time to have a party! DC: 0 Rolled:D100 => 33

"We're having the party early?" You asked… "And here?"

"George wants to spend some time with us, Mike is in Japan, and we haven't been able to do anything like this since last year. Marcia is also bringing Wallie."

"Wallie?"

"You really want George to call George, Junior?"

You frowned. "But Wallie?"

Carrie shrugged. "Well, it's what they call him."

You frowned as George opened the door. "I hope we're not late. And I call him Wallie because why would I call him Junior."

You frowned as George set Wallie down next to Mary and the two began to babble. "It's good to see you, Bruce."

"And without work." You replied as you hugged Marcia, as he watched the two children interact. "So… you brought food, you shouldn't have?"

Marcia frowned. "I am not going to wait two hours to eat while you make a perfect steak. We are going to be having chicken, gravy, and asparagus."

"Did you make it?" You asked.

"You really think I made this?" Marcia laughed. "No. One of the guys at the office did."

"Was it Dave?" You asked.

"Yes, it was Dave. He's sorry he couldn't get a ham." She replied.

Hours passed as you ate, drank, and enjoyed each other's company, while the two children both played around the house, while you chaperone.

However, in the end, everyone went to bed satisfied. But you were thinking one thing.

What did those two kids do when you were not looking?

Reward: You had a wonderful time.

And you have a question to ponder.

Awww!!! Welcome to the world Wallie Lucas, one very happy butterfly of Bruce's existence to be sure. Glad to see that the O'Brians and Lucas' are having good times and continue to be close and now Mary has a best friend, maybe more if they're like Pebbles and Bam-Bam. Look forward to seeing more of their adventures, and whoever it was who wanted to make a Rugrats pitch based off of them talking and playing please do it ASAP so we have some nice fluff.

-[X]The Toho Fuck ups: So Toho broke a contract. Time to make them pay for it! DC: ??? Rolled:D100 => 1

Legal Team Reroll:D100 => 2

Unforeseen consequences:D100 => 50

So… Toho. You fucked around and hid an entire clause in the contract, improperly placed, and ill-defined…

And it worked?

It seems that in your suit, they had gained several powerful friends within the American Judiciary system, as well as friends from Disney and Universal… that actually explained a lot of things actually.

And they were, to put it lightly, making a mockery of you and the legal team. After numerous months… You learned, and Mike learned, to much of his dismay, that the contract had a back date clause when it was amended with Mike last year to finish up for the final round of films to release. A Back date clause with an additional clause.

Set to a year prior to the original contract date, with a clause stipulating in the last two years, Toho was in its legal rights to go to other distributors if it felt that Lucasfilms was not "Meeting and exacting reception to the building of the Toho Brand in America". A statement that was not hard to miss, and a huge fucking red flag, that, at any other time, with any other company, would have been thrown out, because of other information later in the contract.

Mike missed it. You missed it, and George missed it, and so did all your lawyers.

But Toho's didn't. And it seems, neither did anyone else after it was revealed. But it seems the judge… You didn't remember the name, just ruled in favor of Toho, Disney… and everyone else, not Lucasfilms. Partially because you think they were up for election and wanted to earn the bigger companies, and possibly their employee's votes…

But also because something told you that several powerful people wanted it to go Toho's way. You didn't know who, but there was a lot of money behind them. Too much money even.

Now, as you say, you were not forced to pay Toho money, nor did any film you released in America have to be given the profits back…

But Toho was in their legal right to look for distributors.

And they were putting an end to the Lucasfilms Experiment. Permanently.

Critical Failure: Toho pulled a fast one on you, and managed to not only come out of it smelling like Roses… But also making Mike, you, and Everyone in Lucasfilms Management, look the fool.

You also think a lot of powerful people wanted you to fail.

Meanwhile, in Japan, Akira Kurasawa is outraged at the great dishonor to the people who helped him and severed all ties with Toho.

But he was the only one who did. The only director who had the courage to do what he felt was right, and he was alone. And now he is on a plane to America.

To meet with the men who may have saved his life.

Mike Eisner, George Lucas… and man who brought them all together... Bruce O'Brian. And offer his services.

Big fucking OOF, but every great story has to have stakes and consequences and realistically Lucasfilms has to take some Ls, and I'd much rather take an L off of not distributing more Toho stuff than something more important like our relationships or jeopardizing a production. Makes sense that foggie Japanese Corpos can't understand the gift they've been given, and while the betrayal sucks it hasn't hurt our standing too much besides the free profits because we're still super popular in Japan and we can still distribute in Japan through Sunrise who are now our loyal employees. So we no longer have access to Godzilla and Lone Wolf and Cub or Lupin III, but we can make our own kickass stuff.

I agree with Overmind and MysteryCPU in that the best revenge is to be served through inaction and making a shit ton of money and having Toho realize that they are missing out on a money printer. For example, Star Wars had to have given them tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars, and now they are not seeing a single cent or yen. We continue to make badass films and domiante the Japanese market, pushing away Toho productions into failure just based off of sheer demand for Lucasfilms. They'll come to understand their huge fuck up when they realize that Universal are Corpo Scum and Disney wants to make them subservient and assimilate them into the house of mouse then treat them as partners. Then they'll cry and come begging for Lucasfilms aid, and we'll just turn our back and continue to be badasses. That is awesome revenge.

Also instead of fucking over Toho or trying to buy them (Which I think Japan would try very much to prevent happening as Toho is a pillar of their cinema), we can just partner with other Japanese film giants and do good with them. The terms of the reward means we can still reach out and distribute Japanese movies for other companies. Let's support Gamera like Overmind wants, or let's partner with Toei animation. Toei is the studio behind One Piece, let's be the ones to distribute them in America. Instead of kicking Toho down, let's prop up their enemies and make them realize that they just created their own nightmare.

Also really guys, Toho is the greatest enemy? Not Universal who tried to kill American Graffiti before it began, try to make Bruce's personal life miserable and are doing everything in their power to kill Lucasfilms? And not Eddie Fisher who literally sent Carire into depression with his scuminess?

But hey, at least we got Akira Kurosawa in our team so that's cool. Hopefully one of the writers makes that Japanese Romeo and Juliet next turn.

-[X]The Next Mike Eisner Action Plan of 1978: Mike needs to meet up with the directors, Alan... and You, to get everything going. This year was a success. But it could be better. DC: 0 (Begin a miniturn to develop new movies) Rolled:D100 => 94

Well, Mike got everyone in the entire thing…

And hell, Everyone is kind of excited.

But no one had ever seen a truly driven Mike Eisner.

Not until now. He was pissed.

(Continued in: The Mike Eisner Action Plan… Once Again)

Looking forward to seeing Mike's revenge plan. In OTL whenever Mike got crossed, he became a financial John Wick to come out on top and here he's bound to be equally scary and we can do some awesome things.

More importantly, I'm really hoping that with the "Failure" of Hardcore that producers and directors would be more open to working with Lucasfilms and with that nat 94 we'll get a lot of new talent next turn so we can move to more than just four films at a time. Also Magoose, since the turn went to January we should get new scripts from the writer's room and we didn't get them for July.

-[X]The Final Preparations: George was ready, and he gave you the script, the story and his notes. "What You've been busy, so I just uh… did some work for you." DC: ??? Rolled:D100 => 89
-[X]Cementing some Bridges: Tomino and Ralph both had two differing takes… but now is not the time for fighting. DC: 30 Rolled:D100 => 7 (Autopass)

You were honestly worried that the two men were about to come to blows.

Yet somehow, George managed to make them see the light. Or by that, you mean he sat their asses down and told them that the childishness that Tomino and Ralph were displaying, and he wanted it to end.

That led to Tomino and Ralph being forced to compromise on both the design of Cloud City, taking much of Ralphs's exterior of the city, with a large saucer/dome thing, on a very thin piece of metal.

But it was the exterior that Ralph relented on. Tomino had wanted to make Cloud City not only the mining station that George envisioned but also…

Well the simple thing that was, he wanted to add far more "City!" in Cloud City. And he started with the base that Ralph made and then added color. Color everywhere. Graffiti, different colors that seemed to be added on by workers and people, and then there was also some stuff that seemed to be…

Well made it seem alive. Far more than what Ralph first started with.

And even Ralph said that in the end… it might have made his work better.

The carbonite chamber, Tomino's white whale, was unfortunately refused by George, who just… took Ralphs's design because it was dark foreboding, and infinitely scarier. It was like the belly of the beast.

Yet that was paling in comparison to George.

George was pretty much doing everything that you did last time, with Mike riding shotgun. And George was truly in control, hell, he told Mike that unless he said something smart, he should remain quiet, and be very happy that he was producing this film.

Mike was… honestly scared and just spoke very little. It was hilarious to see a man like Mike be cowed by George.

Billy Dean William was brought on after a large, almost ten thousand person audition, and over 500 people were read lines by Harrison again, who was happy to get the work, with Alan and so many much more, even with some film called Indiana Jones being cast that George and Steve were working on, and he was the only choice.

And honestly, the Emperor was brought in, and you did not expect some unknown, to you, Ian Mcdiarmid, was the one who was hired, for one scene.

And you read the script. That was great. Lawrence listened to you.

Reward: Ralph and Tomino have managed to work something out. And it was freaking great!

And George, maybe proved he was incredible as a producer, and he's happy that he doesn't have to direct because he can actually sleep.

All Rolls for the Film itself, and the Film Quality, will increase by +50.
------------------------------------------------------------
-[X]The Hokadio Connection: You joined Mike to go to Japan to speak to the Minster of Culture. DC: 20 Rolled:D100 => 98

It all began with a meeting with the Minister of Culture, and him basically told you both two things.

One, he wanted to make sure Hokkaido was able to be seen with the beauty of Japan, and that the entire nation of Japan was behind, and that to film the battle scenes, there was a very high… 99% likelihood that they could spare an entire division of the JSDF to fill out the scenes.

This means the Costume Department must begin to work now just to fill them out.

Also, he told you to not worry about amenities and waiting for permits. They would have them covered.

He was betting, quite literally, tens of millions of dollars that Star Wars would give Japan the Boom that the filming may bring.

So… You took that bet.

Reward: While Filming in Hokkaido, Gain a +30 to all rolls. All the Battlerolls will be gaining a +50 to their rolls due to the JSDF assisting you.

Including Ariel shots. (Poor Noboru)
-[X]The Media Blitz of Conan The Barbarian: You are looking at the media list that Mike put up. "Alright, who's first?" He said. (Linetail what you want to do next) DC: ???
--[X] While you're in Japan, arrange for an interview with a popular Japanese news outlet to promote Conan. You speak fluent Japanese and Japan is a big fan of Lucasfilms, take the opportunity to ensure that Conan gets a big response overseas. Rolled:D100 => 96

You knew you were popular. You didn't know you were that popular.

From the time you arrived to the moment you took off, you were bombarded by media, fans, and everyone in between, wondering what Bruce O'Brian, the famous Han Solo, was doing in Japan.

And you did what every good actor did. Play to the crowd. You spoke Japanese and it was broadcast almost everywhere in Japan, with everyone waiting to hear every single word you said.

Conan the Barbarian, which was unknown even to anglophiles in Japan, exploded and the Howard Estate got a petition for over one million people to translate the books to Japanese.

And… well. You were damn sure it would sell like hotcakes.

Reward: Your blitz was a huge success. Conan will make so much money here.

Unknown huge positive Effect.

Oh my Lord, Empire Strikes Back is turning out really beautifully. Many people consider Empire to be the best Star Wars movie, and if we make it the same here when New Hope is already considered the GOAT then Bruce is going to be even more of a living legend than he already is, possibly regarded as one of the GOAT Directors and the master of pop culture.

Really happy I got to salvage everything with Tomino and Ralph. Cloud City is shaping up to be just as iconic as Coruscant and I really love just how vibrant and alive Tomino made the city rather than just stale hallways with lots of character in the set design, really makes it an equal to Mos Eisley and it's going to be a major highlight of the film. Also George being awesome as usual as producer and writer is great to see. Maybe with this and President's Men he can get the groove back to enter into filmmaking.

Nice to see that we got Billy and Ian here, two greats of the franchise. Must make them both proud to have such iconic roles and to have beaten such high competition, and good news for Harrison that he's soon going to get Dekkard and Indiana Jones.

Looking forward to filming in Hokkaido. With that +30, we have a -70 to production issues so that means that it's gonna be smooth sailing and we don't have to worry about it being a hellshoot like OTL in Norway. Hope we can fulfill the Culture Minister's goal and we can show off its beauty and give a shining moment to Japan.

Also for those wanting revenge on Toho, we already got some revenge as they are shown just how insanely popular Bruce is in Japan and they're missing out on all that money from future Bruce films where he already managed to make Conan into a huge hit with the film still being edited. Glad we passed this action and looking forward to Conan's success.

-[X]The Sunrise: So time to cement Sunrise as a truly awesome Subsidiary DC: 20 (Also cost 20 million) Rolled:D100 => 65

Sunrise was paid for in an hour, and you learned later…

That every single animator there got a raise to over 70,000 dollars a year, because Tomino said he was paying everyone like they paid them in America.

And it everyone fall in love with you.

Reward: Sunrise Studio has been added to Lucasfilms, as the Japanese Animation Branch or the Japanese Branch of Dreamworks.

The Rights to all Shows made by them are now yours.

Unknown Effect.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Awesome that we're getting Sunrise to join our ranks, really looking forward to all the amazing stuff they can make. Also holy shit that 70k is fucking HUGE and is going to send tsunami after tsunami through the animation industry. For those who are ignorant, Japanese animators are usually paid commission by the amount of work that they are drawn. Because it is time consuming and the commissions are almost nothing, Japanese animators get fucked over and barely make anything with most animators living below the poverty line and they don't make a living wage until they are in their 40s and 50s with a 30k salary, which means your average McDonalds employee makes more than most of the Japanese industry.

Now here comes Sunrise where Tomino is paying every animator a minimum of 70k, which in today's money would be over $300,000. So Tomino is making every single employee of Sunrise rich and even the noobs and lowliest employees of Sunrise are paid more than even most Japanese executives. So anytime a single spot opens at Sunrise, you are going to get tens of thousands of people at minimum fighting for the spot, and with how Sunrise is boomin, everyone is going to get angry and labor is going to rise up demanding better conditions. Huge gamechanger for not only anime, but potentially the Japanese economy. If Magoose Dice supports it.

By the way Magoose, does this mean that technically we can pitch anime and Sunrise can make it?

-[X]Brandon Needs to Graduate, Part 2: Brandon. Guess what, I'm going to get you through accelerated classes. Good luck. DC: ??? Rolled:D100 => 70
-[X]There is Training: So Brandon, you have been taught by many of Bruce's Other students, well time to see if you're ready to learn from… you. DC:20/??? Rolled:D100 + 30 => 49

While Brandon did not slack on his martial arts training, you both focused on him getting to pass several classes he was struggling with. Most notably, Math, Science, and… English?

Carrie had words with him, and made him sit down and learn how to write well.

Reward: Brandon is now getting far better at his studies, though he is scared of Carrie. She is brutal as a taskmaster.
---------------------------------------
-[X]Brandon and Mary: Brandon frowned at the costume. "I am not going to continue this charade." "yes you will, or your mother will hear about this." Rolled:D100 => 57(Autopass)

But he was unhappy at the dinner plays. "Squire Brandon, smile for my daughter and scream in terror." You ordered.

Brandon did not. "This is humiliating. I am not doing that."

Carrie shook her head. "Please, she wants to see her Squire Brandon flee in terror."

Mary was in her dragon outfit and making several roars, but also getting fussier and upset that Brandon was not doing anything to react to her.

"I am not going to be following the whims of a baby." He muttered.

"It's not any baby Brandon, it's Mary the Dragon." You laughed as you took another picture. "So please, do it for me."

Brandon sighed. "OH MY GOODNESS, THE GREAT DRAGON WE'RE DOOMED!"

Mary was laughing as Brandon fell onto his butt and groaned in embarrassment. "Great got a smile out of her." You said.

Reward: Poor Brandon, but hey, you served a good cause by getting a little girl to smile.
----------------------------------------------------

-[X]A Beautiful Night: Carrie snuggled you close. "Is it wrong that I enjoy every moment of this?" She asked. "I want us to have this forever." Rolled:D100 + 40 => 109

Carrie laughed and smiled as you both lay in bed. "I want us to have this forever."

There was a moment of silence as you smiled back. "I do too."

You both embraced each other before Carrie kissed down your neck. She then started- "Carrie, you promised we would wait." You said, groaning as she pulled back, and you stopped her hand from reaching down there.

"I know, but it's a safe day, and I want to enjoy every moment we have before work makes it impossible."

Both of you just lay there, looking at each other before her smile finally caused your to break and you kissed her.

So you did grant her what she wanted.

Reward: You and Carrie have a very… active yet relaxing night.

Glad to see the nice fluff. I guess it's official, as soon as Carrie's done filming her Leia scenes we gonna need to get to work on making another Gosling.

THE GREAT BOOK OF GRUDGES

TOHO
Nov 16th 1978
Used underhanded tactics and bribery to circumvent the general rule of law and shamed the DreamWorks Studio Leaders and employees

For the great dishonor thrust upon us, great damage must be returned upon TOHO 10 fold

@Magoose I petiton that we create our own book of grudges, since everyone seems to want to fuck around and find out

Don't forget Universal, the tabloids and Eddie Fisher.

Now here comes Sunrise where Tomino is paying every animator a minimum of 70k, which in today's money would be over $300,000. So Tomino is making every single employee of Sunrise rich and even the noobs and lowliest employees of Sunrise are paid more than even most Japanese executives. Huge gamechanger for not only anime, but potentially the Japanese economy. If Magoose Dice supports it.
All I will say is this:

Tomino wanted to repay everyone who worked on Gundam in any way he could. And once it happened, he begged Mike to give everyone a raise at Sunrise, to the point where he threatened to quit Dreamworks to take over Sunrise.

Mike, was actually quite shocked, but once he learned about the merchandising, it was all he needed to agree to get Sunrise all on board with the huge raise.

You know one thing we could do to really mess with Toho is to make our own kaiju movies, alternatives to Godzilla. Not saying a 'rip-off' but you know, Hydrox did come before Oreos, just saying. ;)

Put them in the grudge book!

So just asking but with the grudge book added does that mean that Bruce George and mark have their own in universe grudge book somewhere in lucasfilm. Because that thought is hilarious to me.
