Lights... Camera... ACTION!!: A Hollywood Quest

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
Hi Magoose here one of the guys helping Duke.

So we have some bad news.

The quest has been canceled as duke does not want to write it anymore.

I'm going to ask if I can take over for it, because I like this quest, and it would be a shame to kill it
TBF, Mags, you have been doing a lot of the heavylifting for the quest, so this will be in good hands. :)

To be clear to everyone, this is just me burning out on imagination of the quest, since my muse has been hitting me over the head a lot with so many different ideas that I just can't find myself too interested in this.

I'll still hang out here, though, since this still does have a sepcial place in my heart.

I'd like to thank you all for making this a wonderful experience while it lasted.

I'd also like to thank @Magoose, @Fluffy_serpent, and @Martin Noctis for doing so much to help prepare and write this quest. I couldn't have done it without you all. :D

I'll see you all around.

With so many regards, Duke William Of.

DAWW, I'm going to have diabetes from all this sugar and fluff.

Here are the Reward @Kaiser Chris :
[]Looking great, Feeling Great (Carrie gains the Athletic Trait, and she now gains the Model Trait)

Ugh, another list of really great and tough choices. In the end I guess I'll have to go with this, if nothing else than for the athletic to help Carrie live longer and in the late 70's and 80's she dabbled in some modeling so it'd be fitting to have her gain the trait a bit early. We don't do workouts too often so it'd be a bit of a waste, and they could always workout together without Bruce getting the roll boost. We already got the +10 from how great the situation turned out the first time, and since this is a continuation I would probably have it be something different, I just hope the nat roll succeeds on its own next turn.

[]Excelsior (Stan Lee looks at Jack Kirby. "I want to apologize. For a lot of things Jack")
I think I'll go with this. I tried thinking about the advantages of having the TV Market to ourselves, or Grant Morrison on our payroll. But in the end it always come down to this. I love Marvel. I love Jack Kirby and Stan Lee, and if this can help them in some way then I'm all for it.

Please, someone give me a good Omake of this, I really want to see a happy reunion between the two of them.

Done.

Although I am going to say, Carrie is now a woman who wears many, many many hats. She'll have to decide what to do eventually, and then specialize darn it.
Please, someone give me a good Omake of this, I really eant to see a happy reunion between the two of them.
Its less they have a happy reunion, more like the fact Stan acknowledges he was an asshole to Jack, and in his own way, stole credit. But they have a clean slate now... And maybe they can be friends again.

Hopefully one where Marvel doesn't fuck everything up

Interlude: Lucasfilms Unlimited
Lucasfilms Unlimited:

Sunset was falling on the beach as you watched the night slowly begin, and the world seemed to slow from the great problems for the evening. Yet at the table for George Lucas and You, he was not exactly taking the proclamation well. "You want to what?"

"I thought I was pretty clear George, Hollywood hates us, so in the wisdom grown from the experience of getting screwed over… George, I'm going, honestly, I wanna burn it down." Your proclamation was something that was almost childish in its execution yet George, out of all people, understood.

And that was something that you totally believed, frightened him more than anything. George was not so… intense, however. "Bruce, what does that have to do with the founding... whatever this is? What the hell this even is?"

"It has everything to do with it, George." You stated as you looked at him. "We've worked too hard to have all our lives ambitions to be thrown away by some suits who only look at the money. When making Art, you can't just look at the dollar sign. All it leads to is unartistic work, with ideas that don't inspire, but to just drudge along."

"And just, trying to be a direct competitor… being someone who is actively competing, rather than just… working for them?" George seemed to be thinking, his ideas whirling in his head. "I… It sounds insane."

"Nothing worthwhile is ever considered sane by those who have tried. Think About American Graffiti and THX, and think about there being nothing but trouble."

George remembered. "But that-"

"Was different?" You asked.

Silence greeted you and you could see the gears turning in his face. "We're going to need money."

"We can get money." You replied. "Not a lot, but I'm sure Gary and Steve and Francis might get involved. And I can think about maybe bringing in some of Debbies people… and Clint."

"But then we would have to sacrifice… what?" He then sat down against the wall. "We'll just be another machine cogging out movies."

"But they will be our movies." You replied.

George then chuckled. "Our movies…" He then offered a hand. "I get first shot at it though."

"Glad you're on board." You stated.

What do you call this new Experiment and company:
[]Lucasfilm Unlimited (George's Idea, and considering it was the existing company… wouldn't take much to rebrand)
[]write in
--------------------------------------------------

Choose three

What are you going to do to make it stand out. As well as attract investors, actors, directors… and others who want to see what these kids can do?:

[]A New Distribution Company: Whatever this place was, it was going to try and shake up Hollywood, by doing one thing that hasn't happened, successfully, in decades. Distribute their own movies. And that was something that everyone in Hollywood laughs at because they had no money, no talent, and nothing to help them start it. (Begins a Distribution division of the company, in charge of making sure the films are distributed across the country, and the world. To start one would require an intense investment in resources, but it would also see actors and crew getting more cut of the profits, and if successful, also controlling several different assets that would either be sold off or forgotten about. Will Also show you the quality of the film itself before release.)

[]Marketing Division: You want to make sure that all the films this produces, will be something that is near impossible to miss. Everyone will want to see them. And it will be without question, incredible. (Begin a Marketing Division, something that will increase audience reaction, and make the film more money… possibly)

[]A TV Division: George isn't in the business of TV. Luckily, some people like to make high-quality Television, and will gladly accept an untested company, for more creative freedom. At least the Ed Wood Types will. (Start a TV Division that will allow you to make fictional pitches into TV shows. and Increases their quality by +20, on all rolls, except for SP)

[]The House Of Ideas: For far too long the student filmmakers and the young actors are being subjected to what can only be described as Agism. Hollywood isn't taking risks anymore when making their films. And you want to change that. So let's start Green lighting projects that were ignored or told off. And let's see just how much money they missed out on. (All fictional pitches will automatically be given a Screenplay score of 50 and developing them further will include heavy bonuses)

[]Special Effects Company: George, has been having an idea for a while. Something was ahead of its time, and something he noticed a lot. Where were the special effects? Where were the illusions that made the film so popular, look shooting a bullet at the moon made of cheese, or the illusionary start of trying to create something that is impossible? Most special effects companies in Hollywood wouldn't have the funds or the means to try what he wants to do… So, he wants to make his own. (George wants to create a special effects company/ Division, he calls it Industrial Lights and Magic. Add the VFX, and Special Effects Rolls to all productions under this banner, and gain a +20 to all their rolls.) (George really wants this)

[]Animation Department: George does not understand your love for cartoons. Though he does see them as legitimate and cool, he also has only seen the ones made by Hanna Barbara. And he really hasn't like them that much. What he should see, is the old classics that changed the world. (Begin an animation department and can start bringing in a stable to make some crazy cool animated stuff. Any Animated Film made by this one, once fully staffed... will gain a +20 to all their rolls.)

[]Write in

AN: Alright, listen up, there is a Moratorium on this vote for 12 hours. The reason being...

I wanted there to be more, but I've only come up with a few, that are broken and very powerful.

But I'm giving you all plenty of time to get going and make your own. Because they will all have equally as powerful bonuses at least.

Plan format please.

I think these are obvious choices, but I'm not sure about the third pick for divisions/departments. My gut tells me that we should pick Marketing and leave the other stuff for later once we've built a solid foundation for Lucasfilm, but I also REALLY want to pick Animation or House of Ideas.

I want the TV Division and the Distribution. With TV we can make so many amazing shows (and yes, this is because I want to make my pitch come true) and distribution to make sure we are the ones getting the money in the end.

I'm still divided between the Animation department and the Special Effects Company. On the one hand, the first allows us to enter the animation stage just before the Era of Brand and commercial cartoons enter production (and for that I want us to make a deal with hasbro and Mattel if only to get the rights to their lines and cartoons). Special Effects however is going to make a huge resurgence after Star Wars makes its great debut, so having it all be in house would only give more credit, while also making it cheaper in the long run.

But I'm giving you all plenty of time to get going and make your own. Because they will all have equally as powerful bonuses at least.

[]Education and Training Division: George wants to give back to the next generation of filmmakers and entertainers by starting an education and training division. This division will offer courses, workshops, and mentorship programs for aspiring filmmakers and entertainers, as well as provide opportunities for on-the-job training and apprenticeships. This division will require a team of experienced professionals and educators, but the potential for impact and legacy is enormous.

That would allow you all to givenew or first time directors the experience they need.

and give them a +10 to many of their production quality, and negate production disaster rolls.

Would that be alright with you?

I'm not, the answer is rather obvious for our ambitions, ILM is that important to Hollywood's Blockbuster development, and they did it with Star Wars with 1 million (Or so it is said) over budget.

ILM also gives us the ability to hire out our experts to other studios, and in doing so gain money and leverage.

As for TV, I personally think taking advantage of the Animation Age to come in the 80s is too big of a draw, TV is good, but your also forgetting the 80s Merchandising BOOM!

And Merchandising is what built Lucus Film before Lucus Arts Branched out to a little thing called Video Games.

SPeaking of witch, 1984, WE GO TO NINTENDO!

George also straight up just wants ILM, so it would be good and smart to give it to him.

Fair enough. Although I do think that the Marketing Department would be smarter to get first and then we expand into Animation not long after. Probably along with expanding into TV.

Lucas Arts was originally started in '82, so we could probably get that up and running soon as well. We could also eventually find a way into comics and whatnot as well.

Speaking of Japan, it's a very stupid idea, but I lowkey kind of want to start something like an idol company in America. Couldn't tell you why. I honestly just think it would be a fun and amusing idea. I also kind of want to get Ameri-manga to survive.

Some various things we could eventually expand into that aren't listed are: Comics, Merchandising, Land(the Parks, baby!), and Toys. If anyone else has any ideas, then please throw them around!

Fair point, but that's just my two cents on the matter.

We should call it Dark Horses!

Mostly to get access to talent and build bridges For the Anime boom in the 90s sorry for not clerifying

No, I was saying that my Idol desire was stupid, not you bringing up Nintendo. My bad 😅
It's okay, but Japan is a market, one that we can use…and support in equal measure.

1980s/1990s Star Wars (Heir to the empire) by one of the grandmaster anime studios.

It's a Mach made in heaven.
I don't know why, but my text keeps getting rearranged for whatever reason on some of my posts. It's weird as hell and pretty annoying.
Ahh I have the same issues sometimes.

Hot damn, this is most certainly bigger than I was expecting as I had only thought we were going to make a distribution company, but I guess having a nat 100 really does wonders and this will be our best avenue to being independent and making great art without the rampant toxic Capitalism in tinsel town corrupting the process too much.

Our biggest issue has been suit interference so we need some kind of corporate control, and THX could have been a classic and Graffiti could have probably earned 300 mil or above if Universal had been on board from the get go, so we need this to keep all the money in house and get total creative control so the artists and creators get to decide what happens in their story and when it continues or is done, not suits. No matter what however, ILM has to be a part of Lucasfilm because it's the one thing George wants and as a partner, we have to respect his desires and push for ILM. Not to mention that from a historical standpoint, ILM was revolutionary to the development of SFX and was a critical component to tons of the greatest movies. If we want Star Wars to be even bigger, ILM has to be involved.

As for the others, I'm the weakest on Marketing since I think good works can speak for themselves in audience reaction. Although I can also see the argument that marketing leads to powerful blockbusters which builds up the capital to break into other industries so if people want it that's fine. As much as I know people want to make great tv shows, I think that in this social environment and with limited tech and cost, that we can't make TV the best it can be because the times when television truly started to be elevated to film was in the 90s, and even with all the butterflies I'd say at the absolute best we're a decade away from getting the dream shows. Plus I much prefer the more contained process of making movies.

That leaves House of Ideas and Animation department. Lots of people, myself included, have submitted pitches, a lot of them having serious potential to be successful, and with this we get a reliable studio that can lay strong foundations for production and create new works of art that can stand alongside OTL's best. On the other hand for animation, we're in a very interesting point in history for the medium. Hanna-Barbera is entering into creative hell as the studio has lost most of its fire and is just pumping out nonstop Scooby Doo clones. Disney is about to die and the company is about to enter its dark ages. Anime has not yet entered the West, and we're in a transition point where animation can go from something adults enjoy to purely kids content. If we make a really strong animation division, we can dominate the field for the next decade or two, perhaps do some cooperative work with Japanese studios to introduce anime to America, and help make the medium respected as something equal to live action.

Overall very interesting times ahead. Don't have any write-ins for rewards because I'm pretty content with what we got.

and help make the medium respected as something equal to live action.
GI Joe: A serious portrayal of the effects of military operations on specialist in a war they cannot speck of to the public. While exploring the human tales of those who serve.

Also GI Joe: Ninjas are Jedi, Snake Eyes is the coolest cat on base, and the Pits off duty shanangins are so accurate to what bored service men do it's uncanny and reads like a Monty Python's skit.

You know what I think, we should do, we should start recruiting some japanese animator so we can create anime Americano and create a rivalry between japanime and animerica

Star Wars requires ILM, and ILM itself can be hired out in between movies to get us additional money in between movies. It's a legitimate necessity, as it was IOTL.

Next I'm leaning towards advertisement, a good ad campaign means a hell of a lot for movies. Star Wars could have a bigger audience, Kung Fu Kid or Rocky (if we get the later) could be a household name before it even opens in cinema's.

If we hit big with Star Wars and the other ideas like Indiana Jones, Slenderman, Rocky, Kung Fu Kid etc, then we can use the money to create our own distribution company. But the idea is to make hits first, then expand.

let's see if we can get alejandro jodorowsky on board, and make sure he doesn't go too overbudget this time.

@Magoose does Bruce know Irish stepdancing? If not can we learn from the research action?

Asking cuz learning that will help massively with our footwork in boxing. Plus it just looks cool

Either House of Ideas or Animation definitely. It's hard to pick which one though!

A Case for Advertisement:

Now a lot of people are talking about the idea of trying to overtake Disney as an animation studio, or import anime, or take over distribution immediately to cut out the middlemen of the bigger studios.

I'm here to tell you why advertising is important.

Some of you may know about Amazon's Wheel of Time adaptation, it was hated by many book fans, got a middling reception from the critics it was pandering too and got low viewership figures for its cost in the west.

Yet it was a huge success that has been more profitable, when one looks at cost vs viewership at the finale, then the Rings of Power by a notable extent. That's partially because Amazon was really good at advertising it.

Now Amazon clearly cared little about the fans of the book, or being accurate to the world they were translating or it's story, no, what they did was hire some bigger name actors in the Spanish speaking and Indian speaking world, then advertise it as more of an original story that highlighted these actors for an audience far less familiar with the famous fantasy series.

And it worked.

Unlike Rings of Power, which is being given a season 2 for the same reason Disney talked about making a Cruella 2 or Paramount is making a Halo 2, aka Optics and the idea of building a franchise via spin offs, Wheel of Time, despite having many of the same problems and not really featuring those Indian and Spanish big names as much as advertised, gained a huge following in the Spanish and Indian speaking world.

The advertising sold them on stars who didn't feature prominently, but they came to watch and got interested in a property that they didn't know was a bad adaptation, unfamiliar with the source material, the marketing towards those demographics created a large audience that made Wheel of Time a success, despite low western viewership and middling critic ratings.

There are dozens of examples of this. The 'Year of the Matrix' saw both Matrix sequels pull in strong profits despite bad word of mouth. You had video games, comics, books, ads everywhere, and despite people mocking the second movie relentlessly and openly and the third movie getting some pretty heavy criticisms, Revolutions still made at least 127 million, probably more, in early 2000's dollars.

If you know what you're doing? If you have good advertisers? Bad movies can eclipse good ones.

And bad advertising can destroy good movies.

Galaxy Quest has been put on some peoples lists as one of the few 'perfect movies', it is today a beloved classic that almost every Sci Fi fan knows.

It barely pulled in a profit, and crawled its way across the finish line.

It was advertised as a family action movie, its comedy aspects were toned down in advertising, in edits some of its explicit details and lines were cut. Sigourney Weaver, in the famous corridor scene, did not say 'screw that' if you watch her lips move, for instance, the lines were dubbed over.

What could've been a big hit amongst teens and adults, was aimed at kids by marketing, who didn't understand the product, and so failed to tailor the advertising to the right audience, with many of the creators and actors blaming the ad department for the movie failing.

This ain't to say that advertising can keep a good movie down. Galaxy Quest made a killing on VHS. Robocop, which made a middling profit initially in theatres due to the fact its name was hard to market as anything other than a goofy B movie, also did the same. There have been multiple movies which, through just being good, managed to overcome a poor initial reception due to advertising.

But those initial bad receptions are something we want to avoid.

Yes bad advertising won't be the largest threat ever, but it is a threat, we don't want to have to rely on VHS sales for our movie to be successful. That didn't work for Vestron post Dirty Dancing, despite making some great movies like Princess Bride.

Advertising doesn't decide a movie, but it sure as hell can help make a minor success a blockbuster.

As a final example, Captain Marvel was advertised in the after credit scenes of one of the most important movies in one of the largest franchises in the world, it was advertised constantly everywhere you looked and we were told it was the most crucial movie if you wanted to understand the movie solving the cliffhanger of Infinity War.

It was a mediocre movie, I'd rate it about the same level as Thor: The Dark World, yet it made absolute bank, being one of the largest grossing MCU films. Meanwhile Ant Man and the Wasp, which lacked the advertising campaign, hyping and nod in the end credits, despite being a better movie and despite being more crucial to understanding Endgame, made a fraction of Captain Marvel's profit.

It still made hundreds of millions, but that was more due to word of mouth that it was a fun movie.

Overall, this post is mainly a warning, don't dismiss advertising, a good campaign can be the difference between being 'Galaxy Quest' successful and being 'Captain Marvel' successful.

Food for thought.
