Brockton's Celestial Forge (Worm/Jumpchain)

Man, all I can say past a certain point is that if you don't like the power scaling of BCF, you definitely wouldn't like my CF xianxia, lol

Yeah. This is, in the end, still a Jumpchain fic and a Jumpchain fic reaches high levels of power really quickly.

There are problems in the story of course, such as pacing in many forms, though I am glad to see it isn't as bad as the Undersiders vs Bakuda arc. That one took far too long for a simple fight.

But power scaling is probably the first thing to be broken in a Jumpchain fic. It even started off early in this fic when Joe became a better Tinker than anyone in Worm canon combined in like a month.

Just a heads up, you suspend your disbelief. SOD. SOB is "son of a bitch."
lmao, thanks for the tip. I was thinking in my head 'Suspension of Belief... there's something wrong with that'. It being Suspension of Disbelief makes a lot more sense.

An interesting question that's neither asked nor answered in Worm is can Oni Lee's clones teleport? Normally they just stay behind to attack or distract, but the ability to make even a single "jump" would allow him to queue up a half-dozen copies by "stuttering" forward in a series of rapid, short-distance 'ports, who then all simultaneously teleport into position around Apeiron, without putting the real Oni Lee at risk (other than needing to get rid of the board). It would also give the illusion of him having a higher Teleport-Per-Second rate, especially if it was being managed with careful timing.

Oni Lee's clones didn't show themselves as being able to teleport in canon, and given the whole motif of 'Things get worse' of the original webnovel, I assume that if a villain doesn't show an ability to screw up with Taylor/Undersiders it's because they don't have it.

Besides that, Apeiron states that Oni Lee was teleporting IN and OUT, rather than just teleporting IN(as it would've been the case if they were clones teleporting to engage in battle with him)

But even assuming your explanation, this still doesn't explain why the clone's clone had the time to explode anything before Apeiron killed them. Apeiron obviously has multiple automatic weapons with AI targeting, so regardless of it's a single clone or five clones that show up each moment, he should've been able to handle it easily.

Alright now when I have gotten my hype over I can read over this chapter again. I feel like many of us are so critic over March non confirmed death and the sudden competence of Lee so we are overlooking the work and effort Lord had made to make this possible. First its 2 pages of wow fight much epic reactions. Then its 1 page of constructive critic with some unneccesary cruel ones. Then its additional 5 pages that that has mixed ones. Maybe their meaning was for constructive critic however sometimes it felt unneccesary with lot of negative emotions to them.

So I wanted to begin with what I liked and leave it in the bottom what I didn't like.

-Chapter 41-
So Chen's dialogue and his thoughts were really good. It really shows how cape fight is in the ramplight and the faceless masses suffers in the background. Chen's suffering to 'unpowered members' is as real as cape fights.

Joe's move to dump tactical info to PRT-Police-National Police-PHO was good. It show that he's fighting against them. I hope that if Bakuda didn't include their oh shit moment in their stream his copy would have uploaded it too. Then they can get context that he only went along to track their site.

The result had been the most powerful attack I had managed to date
Final Slash makes a comeback. I could feel the tension in air as I read through the dialogue. I saw the devestation even though I should only be able to read it. This makes it really good piece of writting.

-March trap-
With so many chapters being built up for this battle. So much has been pumped up to this fight that the conclusion was made unsatisfactory. The built up was fantastic. Escalation, the stakes even higher with psychological warfare.

He simultaneously needs to limit himself so the PRT doesn't fuck him over after this while dealing with dealing with everyone (read everyone) that wants a piece of his technology or got their egos hurt.
Then the fall when he got hit by March combo with Oni Lee. Her death trap made especially made for him.

All hope almost lost. He only has something left because he purposly hid them. ABB postures against him; how the lone cape couldn't fight them, how much like dominos his fall was made. Then because of the villainess own cruelity, her own ego needed to posture and savor this victory, he realised an ally he had all along and could finally counterattack.

He counterattacked with a punch that should be lethal to his arch enemy and moved on against bulky ABB enforcer that happends to wear Lung's mask. He made sure to punch him outright. He needs to go to next priority. To take down Oni Lee before he reacts, take down Lung, and most importantly he needed to check on March. To do whats necessery. But alas. He couldn't. Why? Because he was already fighting on his absolutely last legs. The agony has coursed through his body all this time. He knew he had a time limit and he absolutely had to finish off March before he ran out of time. But the real reason he didn't do it was because in his red haze of rage/adrealine/lifefiber adrealine he felt Tetra's rage against those who harmed Garment. He knew but he didn't have the will. He couldn't concentrate enough and thus as Tetra felt rage against Lung he got swallowed in her rage. That's why he couldn't make sure March got finished off.

Lung got an epic finisher. its sure going to make all the headlines. Ziz is going to wonder who let FTL tech in this cycle. Cauldron if not already excited definitely noted mc and March existence.

-Why many became angry-
The reason is that this the conclusion didn't feel like an conclusion. We are unsure if March was alive or dead. The majority prefer her death, and I'm unsure if you wanted to have a cliffhanger or wanted to use her in coordination with either Coil or Cauldron.

The point is that maybe LordRoustabout felt Joe is missing antagonists if he finished off her. However just because Worm didn't show many parahuman to pose as an enemy to him doesn't mean there aren't any.

-how to solve no enemies left problem-
I mean a massive amount of people died off in the Golden Morning that just means that there might be capes that were incredible powerful got killed offscreen. Anyone of the already S-class threats might grow restless in response to The Celestial Forge. Nilbog, Machine Army, The Tower or any of the unquaranined S-rank threats that died during Golden Morning.
"That's about it, for North American quarantines. A lot of the unquarantined Class-S threats died in the fight against Scion. Uh."
With additional to the ones that was already in quarantine there are no shortage of enemies. Just with the ones in quarantine there are already 7 in North America. Throw in C.U.I, S-threats that Thanda fight against in India and Sleeper. Just because we doesn't hear about doesn't mean that some South America country under S-threat warlords doesn't got a colossal ego trip with just enough nudging from their passager to attack this super-new-guy-mad-scientist-tinker. As how to get there fast when we didn't see any other cape other than Doormaker and Strider, well maybe he just died before GM and thus didn't make himself known.
Maybe March death cry into the living Shard Network made all natural passangers take note of Apairon, and thus fixate on him. This could have made a lot of restlessness in the 'stable' quarantines.
Maybe Earth Shin somehow got dimensional breach to Earth Bet.

The point I'm trying to sell is don't let a single antagonist get infront of this fanfictions journey and enjoyment.

-Aftermath-
Right now Joe cannot deescalate, his enemies will react in kind to his new showdown. Even when an endbringer shows up, he must kill it if he got the chance. Even if his passanger warns him against it. An alternative would be that he manages to get close to zero casualties when it attacks. With his new tech out in the open and what he can do, he cannot do anything less or else let the press rip him apart. He cannot claim 'my thinker power said so.'

I am excited for next week's chapter (assuming that Life doesn't get in the way again).

So, I've decided to post my thoughts about this chapter. And look, I love this story. When I discovered it, I binged it from start to finish, ignoring just about anything else. But I cannot deny that the fights are seriously flawed, something this chapter exemplifies.

Because the fact of the matter is, as many others have pointed out, that Joe is much too weak, or rather, his opposition is too strong. Now, the explenation that the Shards boost their powers when fighting Joe to get more data makes some sense, but not to the degree that is displayed here. In canon, the Sechen range allows boosts to powers under certain conditions, but those increases are always subtle. Clockblocker can freeze his targets longer, Vista can bend space faster, Skitter gets a little more range, but as I've noted previously, Oni Lee would require a whole new Thinker power to pull off what he did in this chapter.

This results in disappointing fights. Because the powerscale that the reader can glean through the descriptions of Apeiron's technology as well as the knowledge of what these characters were capable of in canon doesn't reflect what actually occurs in the story.

Fact: Oni Lee should've been sniped the moment he appeared by Apeiron's point-defense.
Fact: Apeiron's punch should've vaporized March when he hit her, because he was at the moment Superman going all out against a normal human (at least in regards to durability).

All of this leads to a total lack of catharsis. I don't know about the other readers, but I read stories for the catharsis. I don't mind if the villain wins once. I don't mind if he/she is unbearably smug and constantly belittles the hero. I can tolerate all of that, as long as I can be assured, that in the end, the villain is defeated, his/her delusions of superiority broken. Such villainous breakdowns are always a sight to see.

But there is no catharsis here. Instead, March isn't shown to be dead, which by the conventions of storytelling means that she's still alive; the dead-man-switch is still active, meaning Bakuda remains a threat; the ABB is still around; and Lung, about whom nobody actually cared is dead. How am I to gain any satisfaction from that. The readers were told to be hyped about the comming confrontation which would finally end the arc, showing how much the protagonist had grown, both as a person and as a hero. Except we get this.

Honestly, the best fight in this fic is the second fight between Apeiron and U&L. The former absolutley dominates from beginning to the end, and while he fails to scavenge new technologies from the wrecks, it still shows just how overpowered he is in this setting. It's perfect.

Even Chapter 40 shows a lot of promise, Joe dunks on Bakuda by outright statinf that three day old technology is already obsolete for him. He dunks on March by locating her faster than her power could estimate. The MC is shown to be genuinly powerful. His reaction to seeing Chen as a hostage also proves his growth, it shows that he's matured and is able to make difficult decisions. Only for the next chapter to invalidate all of his progress by boosting the villains way past the point of reason. And that genuinely sucks, because now all this built-up hype evaporates, leaving only disappointment behind.

I genuinely love this story. I will continue reading it because outside of two fights (the first fight against Bakuda and now the most recent one) I've truly enjoyed it. I just think it could still do better.

so, having finally slept a little and digested the latest update, I'm going to sum it up like so;
"Fuck."

Okay, that out of the way, time for Joe's To Do List:
-Recover lost tech: above and beyond any other thing, recover the lost motoroid or at least the magitech core. A certain rabbit showed way too much interest in it.
-Heal
-Search for anything that can prevent multidimensional attacks
-Prepare for a visit from the Triumvirate. No joke to be found here. He almost soloed Lung, after having pushed the dragon above and beyond what Levi had done, not to mention showcasing an S-Class threat (Tetra: reproducing biological entity not native to Earth) as well as what could be considered a trump ability where he "stole Lung's escalation" (because that is how his new anima form is going to be taken). The situation in the city has escalated to the point where you either send in the Triumvirate to settle everything, or you seal the city off like a Simmi containment zone.

In this fic, the amount of bullshit March managed to set up makes me wonder if she would have been better than Canon!Khepri at managing all the capes against Scion.
Like wtf is this story anymore??? Oni Lee single handedly broke Apeiron, March "All according to Keikauru", Lung 2.0 (Had some Duke Nukem genes injected by his shard or something) and Apeiron "I have all the tech/powers in the world, but as soon as I'm against Bunny Girl Senpai all my powers get downgraded by 100 levels!!!"
The fights are long and I quickly stop caring and start skimming after the first 5000 words because its all bloat info to make it seem more dramatic. The story really shines when Apeiron is hanging out with friends and really falls short on this overloaded fights that quickly showcase how useless Apeiron and his power is against people who have Author Fiat backing them up for narrative reasons.
All that tech he's hyped up?? Useless... Gonna need new powers and to turn into a dinosaur to survive this! Make the tech mean something besides healing and hacking Bakuda bombs and maybe Ill start caring about when he's talking tech.
All this stuff and NO DOUBT March and Oni Lee will get away, even with Dragon monitoring everything. 35000 words of bloat, 10000 words of March "I automatically win because I time thing correctly!!1!" And 3000 words of Apeiron pulling victory out of his ass so the story can go on in dramatic style. Ughhhh why are the slice of life aspects of this story so good that it wont let me leave!?
Thank you for attending my rant.

What the fuck was Triumph doing there by himself?
I mean the guy's superpower is shouting, the fuck was he doing engaging the ABB on his own? How did he outpace the rest of the protectorate on foot?

Don't forget the most important one:
-Rest.

Because after physical and mental strain of this calibre anyone needs at least a day off.
You know it: go lava surfing, drink some elvish tea, see how Garment's shop getting by.
Anything that does not get city on fire and you in billion pieces.

I think he was on patrol when all hells broke lose, so less "engaged ABB" and more "was suddenly ambushed by big lizard".

Good thing that he's booked for therapy in literally three days. Also, I've got a feeling our good ol' Doc would be needing some therapy himself once he realizes that Joe is the guy he's been hearing about all week.

I love this story but lately it's been incredibly unsatisfying. I am worried that it is going the way of Save the Bay: Fixing the City with Organized Crime.

Imagine Lord just confirms March is dead in a WOG on Ao3 or by turning
'The impact tore her from my grip in a bloody motion and sent her flying, painfully bouncing along the concrete before stopping dead against a cargo container.' Into
'The impact tore her from my grip in a bloody motion and sent her flying, painfully bouncing along the concrete before stopping, dead, against a cargo container.' And just not telling anybody lmao
That would be so funny, but rather anticlimactic.

That is what I'm currently mulling over. I don't have a solid opinion/conclusion yet, but... I don't think Joe is the only one who can make an equivalent to the 'three day old technology' line.

As folks have noted, Bakuda's tech is operating orders of magnitude above and beyond here, Oni Lee is acting like he has a bonus thinker/mover ability on top of his normal PTP teleportation, Leet is doing the GAMER GRID (whatever that ends up being, though I have suspicions), Lung escalated above and beyond even before first entering combat, March managed.. well, LR has been really cagey about what she's actually been doing.

Point being, while that line was impressive in the moment, I'm a little confused by why it was impressive to the people in-universe, as everyone else seems to have easily matched the feat.

I got an idea how to not be SOD breaking with Sechen range if Lord decides do dial down on the disblief on Oni Lee's and March borderline reality manipulation.
That the Shards can overtax themself for Data but doesnt want to anymore because it damaged them too much for it to be a viable data gathering tool. Can anyone help me get this better without editing latest chapter?

Don't worry, it's more likely to go Bask In Fear and Glory That Is Our Emperor Apeiron. At this point, he has definitely cemented himself to be the top of the food chain in the Bay.

Remember, before this, that was Lung. Lung was the guy every group in the Bay sent entire teams of Parahumans against, and the general gameplan with him was "Buy time before retreating." And that was Lung when his greatest feat was reaching 35 feet in size fighting against Leviathan.

Now look at Apeiron. Look at Lung. Unfortunately, your Lung will never be good as Apeiron, not even after transforming into a new record of 50 feet, but as long as you don't make Apeiron mad you will be safe from him.

I'm gonna laugh so damn hard if the motoroid was taken by Bakuda. Not because that's how she'll continue to be relevant, but because that's how she'd be captured. I imagine that at this point Bakuda would need more than the 24 hour wait period to get a new workshop up and running. But then at the 24 hour mark the motoroid gets fiat fixed, and has a copy of Fleet piloting it. So within 10 minutes of being fixed, the motoroid is gonna show up at Joe's place with Bakuda in hand.
