Wait. Someone in-universe made a dramatization out of the deaths of 3 billion people?

Holy shit.

I suppose, since Gendo and Misato are the only survivors of the Katsuragi expedition, they're the protagonists.

Gendo I could see not giving a damn (pretty sure it's canon that literally nothing in the world matters to him but getting Yui back), but wouldn't Misato flip her shit if such a thing existed?

I seem to recall, when Shinji was on his walkabout after the battle with the 4th Angel, there was a short clip of him watching what sounded, from the dialog, like some sort of disaster movie -- possibly even about Second Impact.
Now I'm imagining it's a "Deep Impact"/"Armageddon" type movie.
Yeah, it sounded like a cheesy action/SCIENCE SAVES THE DAY! movie. And you'll note the theater was almost empty, too. Ok, so it was the middle of a workday, and the only people in there were Shinji and a teenage couple making out...

Two scenes done, working on the party proper now. There will be some sort of update by Friday.

There was also what appeared to be a couple homeless people sleeping in there too. I guess good cinema attracts all crowds?

Really, Shinji's entire segment during that episode was horrendously depressing except for his stay with Kensuke. He rides totally alone (emotionally) on a train, sleeps on a bench, then in a theater, and takes the time to swing by a suicide cliff and ponder whether he should jump or not. When he finally comes back and talks to Misato, his attitude implies he didn't jump more or less because he believes he wasn't even worth suicide.

Sounds like someone with crippling depression.

Shinji has depression and lives a depressing life. Coming at the top of the hour, our report on the Pope and what religion he is.

It's exactly someone with crippling depression. Shinji was suicidally depressed even before he came to Tokyo, and probably would either have gone through life evolving into another Gendo or just eventually killed himself. Japan (or any country in the world, really) isn't exactly great with letting you open up about your feelings, something Anno knew quite well.

Let's hope Shinji didn't had any Phil Collins or Linkin Park on that SDAT.
