Also, discovering he kind of blew up the world to save the life of a girl with backup clones on tap and the whole exercise was a bit pointless can't have helped either.

While Mari's introduction was something that probably didn't help the movies, I actually liked her character. Walking fetish advertisement or not, she's fun.
Really, Rebuild should have just stuck to the original idea.

I still want to know what happens in between 2 and 3 goddammit. Fucking tease with the ending of 2.22. But yes, they should have but really I think it's just Anno trying to finally kill the franchise that just will not die. *shrug*

To be fair, the second rebuild film is actually decent. The first one is basically episodes 1-6 so it's hard to judge it by merit - good animation, but everything else of quality is straight from the original series.

It didn't go bad till the third one.

They made a third one? No, they didn't. It's still stuck in development hell last I heard. Something about re-writing the script so that the previous two movies aren't completely invalidated. Obvious sarcasm should be obvious.

Strange. That joke stopped being funny in 2013 but people keep saying it. Maybe they're doing the Dane Cook strat?

It's almost as if Anno was like "y'know, Eva is confusing af. Rebuild will get rid of all the plotholes and reinforce what we want the audience to think... Not this esoteric bullshit". Then some guy at Gainax went, "but sir, being a mindfuck series is what made Eva sell so well!", to which Anno replied, "Oh, I didn't say we're making it more straightforward."

The first two were good. The first movie was everything I wanted: a version of NGE with animation that didn't make my eyes bleed. The second was still good but I didn't really care for Mari since she didn't really add anything only took away from what other characters could have and should have done. But hey, it looked like they were going somewhere with her character, so maybe that wasn't so bad.

Then Anno decided to nuke the franchise.

So yes Lord of Bays, I still maintain that the real third movie hasn't been made yet because what we got was not the third movie. What we got was a movie meant to drive NGE into the ground so Anno would never have to work on NGE again. Take a look at were the franchise has gone in recent years. It's become the very thing it was originally deconstructing. A franchise built on lazy by-the-numbers writing with faux-philosophical mumbo-jumbo thrown in to make it seem profound, style over substance, and let's not even talk about the thing that is ANIMA. If you want something mentally stimulating from Gainax employees (albeit former) that came out recently, go watch Kill La Kill (more understandable NGE with the numbers filed off) or Little Witch Academia (Harry Potter with the numbers filed off), because Evangelion is the goose that Gainax barely has to put effort into making it lay the golden egg even when they try to kill it.

Allow me to recite a old story as told by Alan Moore when asked about how he felt about Hollywood ruining his comic books with their film adaptations,

"Apparently, someone asked Raymond Chandler once what he thought of Hollywood ruining all his books. And he took them into his study and pointed up to the shelf where they all were, and he said, 'Look, they're there. They're fine. They're okay.' That's the attitude I have to take. The film hasn't ruined my book".

-Alan Moore, who then proceeded to drink the blood of a newborn Giraffe and flew out the window, breathing fire out his anus. Not really... but 10 points and a hug to the person who got the shout out.

Point is, just because 3.0 exists doesn't mean the first two movies and the classic TV Series is ruined. The Franchise isn't dead... maybe conked on the head badly thanks to a bad direction (frack, if you thought 3.0 is bad... I got a name and three words for you: Anima, and lolicon cat girl), but other than the unmentionable story, I personally think Evangelion is still alive and well, as testament to all of us being here reading Strypgia's fine work.

Now J.J. Abram's direction on Star Trek AND Star Wars.... that's an entirely different issue, and to prevent derailment, I'll leave it at that.

...I beg your pardon?

It was the best one sentence summation of KLK I could think of after being awake 24 hours so sue me.

That the original is still good was never in question. That the community is still alive never was either. That what we got was actually what the story was supposed to be and not just Anno deciding people will buy anything with NGE's name on it was the issue for me at least.

Repeat after me: Modern day update of Cutie Honey.
Anno deciding people will buy anything with NGE's
It's not clear how much control he has -or had -over the merch.

Also, Anno reportedly got depression while making the movie. I imagine he just threw up his hands at some point and just decided he would get it done, even if it was bad.

... explain 'stereotypically British'

since my brain just keeps making her into James Bond.

I'm going to see if I can link to this stuff.

So here's some Mari concept art, to start with.

Then a segment from this interview here:

At that point it was fixed that Mari would pilot Unit-02. However, Misato and Shinji's separation, what the course of action would be after the berserk of Unit-02 that Mari piloted, what happens after the angel consumes Unit-00 - these sorts of things were a long way from being settled. Mari's appearances, as well - in draft 13b, dated May 23rd, there was a scene where she had tea with Shinji on the roof of the school. For Part D, I focused on continually producing revisions from May to about September. There are 13 drafts just in the data that still remains. Really, it was like all sorts of ideas were coming up and then disappearing.

Let me know if the links break for some reason.

Coulson faced down a god and showed no hint of fear. I haven't seen Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. but he's probably done some neat things there too. Some old men won't scare him.

Damnit, every time I see 'Old Men' all I can think of is 'old men are the future'. Curse you, Deus Ex.

That's more or less what I meant. The Old Men would have disagreed that Coulson makes things more pleasant for everyone if they had still existed in any way or form for more than a few days after Coulson got the job. Coulson (and May, and maybe their one-eyed former boss) would have made things (briefly) less than pleasant for them. ;)

MARI'S BRITISH!?

But...her accent...it can't be...it just can't. There is not a single person on this godforsaken wind swept rock who speaks like her!

I mean bugger, I'd bloody love a British pilot to be part of the main cast. But Mari...she does not strike me as a fellow subject of Her Majesty the Queen...also we do not know what happened to Britain. WHY DOES NO ONE EVER TALK ABOUT BRITAIN!?

By complete coincidence, the city of London-3 is under attack by eldritch creatures called Kami, and only the LYMPH organization and their mysterious director stand in their path. The people at the UN get very annoyed if you ask about the similarities.

Arg. Still trying to get settled in at Camp Arifjan. Kuwait sucks. I haven't been able to do any writing, though I think I've worked out a satisfying way to structure the next few scenes. I hope I will get a chance to write tonight. (in about 6-8 hours)

Ah, just felt that quote was relevant to the topic at hand lol...

Originally, her Plugsuit was green because it was meant to suggest British Racing Green, even her later Pink Plug Suit was originally meant to be green as well, with Orange highlights.

Now if only she spoke the Queen's English as well... at least she drinks tea in 3.0... not much of a consolation admittedly, but still.

Wouldn't that be Spectrum's Job? or Shado's? or UNIT and the Doctor? Huh... eldritch abominations seem attracted to islands... and Britain fending them off is just as common as it is for Japan.

The main difference is that our approach to planetary defence involves fewer lovingly hand-drawn giant robots and more running down poorly-lit corridors on videotape. Budget cuts, you see. I blame the Tories.

On a more serious note, Mr Anno seems to have been a big UFO fan- you see subtle references to it everywhere from the main titles to the character design. So your SHADO comment isn't too far off the mark.
