...you realize you just cross-wired Gendo and Agent Coulson in my head, right? Thanks for that....
Oh, that is just wrong. I'm going to need about a gallon of brain bleach now....

Am I alone in thinking it was Rei?
No.

Probably not Rei. The Reivalation  was what caused her bender. I'm thinking either Misato or Kaji, since Ritsuko's known them both since college.
On the other hand, sometimes its easier to let someone who doesn't matter as much to see you at your worst.

Rei: (Upon Ritsuko thanking her and explaining how her words 'opened [her] eyes' to some important truths): It was no problem, Akagi-sensei. ...I suppose, then, you could call it a... Reivalation?

Ritsuko: O.O Did... Did you just make a joke?

You have to admit, 'Agent Coulson: Director of NERV' would make things so much more pleasant for just about everyone, especially the Children. The Old Men of SEELEE would however likely disagree were they still in any position to do so.

Heh. Misato and May; old battle/drinking buddies.

Coulson faced down a god and showed no hint of fear. I haven't seen Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. but he's probably done some neat things there too. Some old men won't scare him.

Damnit, every time I see 'Old Men' all I can think of is 'old men are the future'. Curse you, Deus Ex.

I am now wondering what an Evangelion / Xeelee Sequence crossover would be like.

Despite having never consumed the latter set of works.

Instrumentality would be portrayed as an ambiguously good thing. Either its a way for humanity to meet the Xeelee on equal terms or the Xeelee manipulated the event to make sure humanity doesn't bother them anymore.

There's a long not-terribly-well-written fauxlosophical epilogue as Yui-in-Unit-01 drifts through deep space and deep time and witnesses the end of the universe (I've rather gone off Stephen Baxter in recent years).

According to Hulk, EVERYONE except Hulk is puny.

The HitchHiker's Guide to the Galaxy entry on Earth, as written by the Hulk: "Mostly Puny."

Aaaaand, now I'm pondering Evangelion crossed with Clarke's Childhood's End....

I figure it can make that structure if needed.

*Was introduced to Evangelion through Rebuild.*
To be fair, the second rebuild film is actually decent. The first one is basically episodes 1-6 so it's hard to judge it by merit - good animation, but everything else of quality is straight from the original series.

It didn't go bad till the third one.

As both Rei and Asuka were deconstructions of various anime girlfriend tropes, so to is Mari a commentary on the SI in a fanfiction.

No think about it. The way she is... it's like a bad SI being forced into the story.

The irony is that Mari was going to be more stereotypically British at one point. There's some old concept art floating around somewhere...

Really, Rebuild should have just stuck to the original idea.

It seems to me that Rebuild also pokes fun at Shinji/Rei shippers. Congratulations, you've just found out that you destroyed the world in vain to save a clone of your mother. Have a nice day!
