And suddenly we're in a Film Noir...
Misato: the detective, shell-shocked and alcohol-fuled.
Kaji: Misato's partner, feckless and promiscuous, but she needs to find his killer.
Shinji: the McGuffin, fearful and confused, he knows something but he doesn't know what it is.
Gendo: the untouchable villian, never directly involved but behind the corruption.
Ritsuko: the femme, troubled, Gendo's lover, but a history with the detective.
Fuyutsuki: Gendo's front man, a lawyer who had morals, long ago.
Rei: mysterious, amnesiac. Which side is she on? Even she doesn't know. Or is she something else?
Asuka: the lady in red, has something to prove; a red herring in fact--or is she?
Hikari: the waitress, tough and a heart of gold.
Kensuke: the informant, knows everything except the most important thing.
Touji: the dumb muscle, works for anyone who pays, loyal until the next job.
Kaworu: the punk, dispensible, ultimately insignificant.
Bridge bunnies: the characters you forget as soon as the scene changes.
Yui: set the plot in motion, but long dead--maybe.
