Gendo, thy name is Sunk Cost Fallacy.
The kind of man capable of ever, ever, ever, in a thousand years stopping and going "wait, what the fuck am I doing and why am I doing it" and applying some semblance of a sense of perspective to his actions...

...Would never have gotten anywhere near to the point of Gendo Ikari's endgame.

This is a man whose entire life trajectory has been, so far as I can determine, illuminated by the light of his burning bridges and paved underfoot with all the red flags he ignored and trampled over to get to where he is now.

"I am truly sorry it had to be this way. I think this will be the last time we speak in this world. Goodbye, Ayanami-san."

Rei's eyes closed and darkness swirled up to meet her.
Fuyutsuki, you disappoint me. Though I suppose I shouldn't be, he's been in this game as long as Gendo has, if not longer, and is likely locked into certain courses of action.

Commander Ikari's stony face appeared before her. "I told you, Major. There is only inevitability. This only ends my way or theirs."
There's always a third option, Rokubungi. You just refuse to even think it exists.

His face somehow hardened further. "She will understand.
No, you nihilism-addled fool. She will not.

Anyway, here's hoping Kaworu notices the wrongness of the Rei body sent to assassinate him in time.

Thank you for the update Strypgia!

Oh, hell yeah, we're back! Glad to see we're heading like a damn freight train into the final confrontation.

As always, you remind me why A&T was largely responsible for inspiring me to write my own fic, Strypgia. The whole interplay between Gendo, Misato, Ritsuko, and Kaji was so damn good!

Good to have your back Stryp :D

...but to come along after so dang long and drop such a bombshell segment on us, my God man my heart can barely take it! :p

Gendo has summoned Misato and friends to his office, SEELE is on the move, and the JSSDF may be mobilized already

Aaaand it's not gonna end well for anyone is it? :V

This would probably be easier if you were asleep. Though I suppose this gives me opportunity for one last, futile apology. I'm sorry it had to be like this, Ayanami-san. All of this," he said sadly. He looked down at the displays on the console again. He sighed again. "We truly live in a fallen world, that this is the better way."

I swear to God if you're killing her again...

"We know, Ayanami-san. We know. That disagreement is why I am here. SEELE is going to move soon, and we cannot let them move faster than us. And if you are unable to fulfill your role in this, then that burden can fall to another. A sad facet of how we've treated you." He walked over to the cylinder and placed his hand on the glass. "I am truly sorry it had to be this way. I think this will be the last time we speak in this world. Goodbye, Ayanami-san."

Rei's eyes closed and darkness swirled up to meet her.

I'm hoping with that vauge wording theres a chance she gets out of that alive, but then again this is late in the game and Fuyutsuki at least appears to still be on side with Gendo...

So I'm just assuming the worst again! Oh my God you killed Rei! You bastard! Do I need to start selling torches and pitchforks again? :p
Maybe Rei-III possesses Fake!Rei?
The penguin says desperately grasping onto any hope :V

Gendo somehow stiffened without moving at all. "You know noth-"

"We know everything!" Misato overrode him again. "She's been talking to your son for weeks. And if you ever bothered to talk to him at all, you might even know that. He's certainly been telling us what she's been saying, and she's not very happy with you!"

Definitely a good way to get under his skin huh :V
I hope Yui plays a good role in making the wheels fall off his plan.

Rei, what are you doing? You know what this means!" Misato asked in confusion.

Rei Ayanami just stared silently at her.

Commander Ikari turned his head a few degrees toward the First Child. "Go. Kill the last Angel, then await my arrival."

"Yes, sir," the First Child said, barely loud enough to hear in the cavernous office. She began to walk around the Commander's desk.

This, and then Fake!Rei's reaction when Misato tries to get a one-up on them... Chills, I swear.
Also surprised he didn't just outright kill all of them then and there.
At this point Kaworu is going to 100% suspect something is up with Rei and I hope that's enough to see him through this situation.
Either way, when Shinji and Asuka find out... Oh boy, they'll be fucking hell to pay.

Good segment as usual mate, glad to see you're back at it and hope life gives your a bit more free time for the future :)

THE PROPHECIZED ONE RETURNS UNTO US

WE, YOUR LOYAL ACOLYTES, HAVE LONG AWAITED THIS BLESSED DAY

PRAISE THE FISH

"We know, Ayanami-san. We know. That disagreement is why I am here. SEELE is going to move soon, and we cannot let them move faster than us. Rei's eyes closed and darkness swirled up to meet her.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Fuyutsuki, if you actually killed her, I pray the deepest pit of hell opens for you and yours when Doomsday comes.

Looks like we're in the endgame now. The masks are being thrown aside, the facades set set down. But, I'll be damned if the update notification wasn't a brilliant end-of-day gift for us all. Welcome back, Stryg. Here's to the beginning of the end.

Okay, one, hopefully Rei isn't dead. And hopefully the new Rei, who I'm calling "Kyu" isn't going to need to get put down. Two, hopefully Asuka doesn't get mauled by a bunch of worm-faced harpies that she gave enough damage to to leave any other Eva out of action. And three, hopefully we get to see Yui chew Gendo out for everything he did to his son, DAUGHTER, and everyone else.

Lastly, why is it that the security forces are blindly loyal to the Commander? By this point the lot of them should be questioning his orders.

It lives!

Good to have you back, Stryp, busy though life has been. :)

That being said... fuck! What a gutpunch of a segment to come back with. Not what I was expecting to wake up to on a Thursday morning.

Misato needs a hug.
Rei needs many hugs and maybe an adrenaline shot.
Gendo needs a piledriver to the face.

i can't remember many details...oh no i need to reread this.

the horror

[is monotone]

"The number you have dialed is not in service. Please hang up and try again..."

Stryp it's canon in this quest that Rei has the memories of Lilith and that she has already reintegrated herself fully into a new clone body. The only way the new clone of Rei actually stays a separate person from Rei is if Rei wants her to be a separate person.

The only question you haven't answered at this point is: Does Rei comes back before or after Instrumentality has been triggered?

Rei's eyes closed and darkness swirled up to meet her.
Welp, RIP Rei.
She dimly heard Kaji shout her name and rapid footsteps. They came towards her and then past. There was another humming buzz, the sound of a body falling, and another clatter of a pistol hitting the floor and skidding.
Welp, RIP Kaji.
Commander Ikari's stony face appeared before her. "I told you, Major. There is only inevitability. This only ends my way or theirs."

Misato narrowed her eyes in as harsh a glare she could manage. "She won' forgive you f'r this… Tol' us," she slurred, her tongue and lips half-numb. "You hur' Shi'ji…"

His face somehow hardened further. "She will understand. I have no time for your lies."

He jerked a nod at the guards. "Take them away."
Welp, RIP everyone.

Totally for sure.

Huh, kinda lost sight of this thread, didn't I?

Good to see you back Strypgia. This chapter shows that things can still go fubar. The only way Misato, Ritsuko and Kaji can get out of it is that is if they had prepared before hand. The question is, did they? To celebrate, I shall do a tarot reading for what will come. (Sorry no Images)

-For the main them there are two that are most relevant. Judgement and the World. Judgement day has more or less come in that setting and it will affect the world at large. Also, this phase of their lives will irrevocably end.

-For the past it is The Tower. The great catastrophe that is the Second Impact is what set these events in motion in the first place.

-For the present is The Hanged Man. Weather they know it or not , their greatest trial is imminent. They may very well be changed by what will happen.

-For the future is Death and The 10 of Swords. Both Sideways. Death means a great transformation. The 10 of Swords means a devastating defeat. Them being sideways means we don't know which way the prediction will go.

For a question for what will come, will the Eva pilots hesitate to use lethal force against the JSSDF?
