"Have a good day at work, honey!"
I endorse this.

Asuka kept staring at her lap. "I'm so fucked up."

*Hospital flashback intensifies*

A vision of an older Asuka coming in the door flickered across his mind. She was dressed for some office job, smiling as he came out of the kitchen to greet her, just another day together.

If you weren't talking about this image I will eat my pants.

Splendidly written as usual, and I eagerly await for, as a certain Sith Lord said, MOAR

Honestly, I have trouble imagining Shinji and Asuka getting "normal" jobs after all the stuff they've been through. While I don't think she'd necessarily be bad at it, it's hard to wrap my head around Asuka as a lawyer or an engineer. Shinji as a caterer, while it would be within his wheelhouse, also feels kind of strange to me. TBH, I think it's far more likely that Asuka would continue to fight as long as she could, then transition to being a military advisor or scientist at NERV when she's inevitably forced to stop. Shinji, meanwhile, might very well end up as a composer; maybe even a professional cellist if he can work up the courage to perform in front of a massive audience of complete strangers.

Well... to be honest, my first reaction (once I stopped laughing at the bad-even-for-2009 CGI Rei Head) was "We waited 7 years for this?" The ending was a great meta-commentary on the whole franchise... and utter shit for it's own story.

GMTA, apparently:

[...]

2) From a purely meta standpoint, it was a very intriguing and all-encompassing sendoff of the Evangelion franchise as a whole, especially from Hideaki Anno's perspective. It's also quite pretty, visually. (Thematically...eh, it's a mixed bag.)

[...]

Overall: very entertaining, and the meta perspective is enough to make it enjoyable (since Evangelion's kind of known for that anyway). Purely as its own self-contained story though...it's rather rough, and the way a lot of details and revelations are presented don't help.

Anyhow...what sitcom would Shinji and Asuka most identify with? Leave it to Beaver? All in the Family? Married...with Children? Family Ties? Heck, Malcom in the Middle? :V

Where is that comic from?

That is where we differ a bit--given what they've gone through, I'd think something quieter would be welcome. It's why *spoiler* for my current story, by its end, Shinji's a radio DJ and Asuka's a sound engineer.

Other note, that parody of The Breakfast Club poster is something I didn't know I wanted till now! Made me think of a story idea of mine where Shinji winds up outside his comfort zone when he ends up directing a school play adapting that same film. Toji as the jock, Kensuke as the nerd, Asuka as the 'princess', Kaworu as the 'criminal', and Rei as the 'basketcase'.

That image/comic also led me to finding these two other comics by the same artist:

Asuka the Mad Dog and Shinji the Adult, 1 and 2.

And now with seeing "Asuka the Mad Dog", I want a Yakuza and NGE crossover/fusion with Asuka as Goro Majima. :V

Honestly, Rei Ayanami had no clue as to why the Nerv Clan had her dealing with loan sharks.

"...that seemed unnecessarily violent, Ayanami-san."

Ah, but of course, she couldn't help but muse as she turned towards the rather nervous-looking man; she had been entrusted with 'bloodying' the young master of the Ikari Family. As far as Tokyo-3 went, nothing happened within the New Kamurocho district without the say-so of Gendo Ikari; as such, he had deemed it only fitting that one of his top enforcers would be the one to finally introduce his son to the realities of yakuza life. So far, the more pragmatic side of her felt that this life was not suited for the young master. "They knew the consequences of flouting our rules. They paid them. Accepting responsibility for one's actions is a key tenet of our code."

Shinji rubbed the back of his head with a bit of nervousness. (A weakness, surely.) "I know...but did you have to suplex them onto the cement?"

Rei glanced at the trio of unconscious bodies further down the alley. "It was efficient."

"You and I have very different meanings of the word efficient..."

A new voice suddenly shattered the evening atmosphere. "Ah, wunderbar! If it isn't the Blue Doll herself!"

And here we go, Rei thought to herself with a stern frown; walking into the alleyway alongside a silver-haired man was a wild-looking woman with blazing red hair. Clad in black leather pants and a snakeskin-patterned brown jacket, the only thing preserving the woman's modesty was the sarashi wraps covering her chest. Of course, the one-eyed woman — her scarred left eye hidden by a black eyepatch — didn't much care for propriety on the best of days. "It's been a while, Sohryu-san."

"Aw, is Ikari's little Doll afraid to hurt my feelings? Who cares for that polite bullcrap?!"

"Now now," cautioned the silver-haired man beside her, dressed in a suit that was practically all bright colors, almost to the point of being gaudy. "The Seele Clan has a pact of neutrality with the Nerv Clan, so play nice, Miss Sohryu."

The cyclops snorted at her handler. "Whatever, Kaworu."

Asuka Sohryu, thought Rei with an analytical stoicism. Mad Dog of the Langley Family. A real hellion...and a problem child for the family patriarch, from what I recall. The family dynamics involved were allegedly a headache, so she didn't bother delving any deeper. All she cared to know was that Asuka was a yakuza captain of renown...and for someone with her temperament, that said something. "Why are you in Ikari territory?"

"What, not in the mood for an old friend?"

"You and I have been allies of convenience at best."

Asuka snorted. "See what I mean, Kaworu? No manners at all..."

Sometimes, the redhead's brash mannerisms — so obviously gaijin and lacking in any sense of cultural sensitivity that was a necessity for the best yakuza — could be so grating...and why was she looking towards the young master? "Sohryu-san, he's not for you to-"

"It's you," she said with a hoarse voice, blue eye wide with recognition.

"...oh. It's you," muttered Shinji with an almost resigned dread.

Rei's eyebrows almost disappeared into her shaggy blue hair. "Ikari-sama, you've met Sohryu-san before?" When had this happened?!

Asuka chuckled, cracking her knuckles as she stepped towards the nervous young man. "I was in a pinch against those verdammt punks from the Angel Alliance...and out of nowhere, you got pulled in, and instead of balling up like a bitch, you just started whaling on everyone. It was...magical."

Ayanami blinked. "The Alliance...?" Turning towards Shinji with wide eyes, she distantly recalled how a whole group of thugs and hooligans from the Israfel Family had ended up going to the hospital. There had been some altercation at one of the hostess clubs lying on the border of Ikari territory, not even a week ago. That was Ikari-sama and Sohryu-san that did that?

"...I'd rather not do a repeat of that," he said.

"Now now, Shinji-chan," crooned Asuka with a strangely emotional energy. "Let's not play coy...I wanna see what you can really do."

"...I don't have a reason to fight you, Sohryu-san."

SMACK.

Rei bristled as Asuka backhanded Shinji across the face. "How 'bout now, huh? Ya gonna cry? Ya gonna go soft as a marshmallow? Like a shih tzu's Scheiße underneath my heel?!"

Rei prepared to step forward, only to be stopped by Nagisa's arm. "What-?"

"Wait," he whispered, looking rather stern. "Let's...let this play out."

Only Nagisa's reputation as one of the most reasonable enforcers in the Seele Clan's employ made her stop...but only just. If she goes any further...

"I have no reason to fight you, Sohryu-san," he insisted.

Asuka got right up into Ikari's face, practically nose to nose. "Oh? Is it cause I'm a woman? Think I can't hack it, huh? Think I'm just a two-timing bitch who spreads her legs to get to the top and can't fight for herself, HUH?"

"...I never said any of that," he managed to say with admirable restraint.

"Oh ho...well you're the crotch-spawn of a yakuza patriarch, just like me; what makes you think you can get away with playing the limp-wristed pansy? Where's that fire I saw against those Angel thugs?"

Rei didn't miss how Shinji's right hand slowly clenched over and over. Finally, he said, "there's no point to it. Not now."

"...just making things harder on yourself, you baka," growled Asuka, spitting onto the ground. "If you don't bust the balls of everyone else, yours are gonna get busted."

"You can see it that way if you want...but I'll do things my way. And you won't change my mind."

The standoff seemed to continue for forever...until finally, Asuka loosed a throaty belly laugh. "Well then, looks like I'll just have to keep my eye on you until I find a way to make you change your mind...because the way you fought was way too intense for it to be a one-time gig."

"...thanks, I suppose..."

Turning on her heel, Asuka snapped her fingers. "Come on Kaworu, let's blow this bland back alley."

"Of course, Miss Sohryu." Nagisa nodded in Rei's direction, briefly making a few recognizable hand gestures: 'drinks, later? The usual place?'

Rei shook her head, subtly sending a few signals back: 'too busy. Try for weekend.' (Fraternizing between the Nerv and Seele Clans wasn't strictly forbidden, per se...but it was best not to advertise it.)

"Try not to be a stranger, Doll...and I'll see you soon, Shinji-chan~" audibly crooned Asuka.

Shinji, surprisingly enough, responded without stuttering. "Very well, Sohryu-san...it's a date."

Those words almost made the Mad Dog of Langley trip. It was covered up well enough with a wild and manic laugh, but Rei knew that the redhead had legitimately been caught off guard. How...interesting. She looked towards her younger charge with a raised eyebrow.

"...is something wrong, Ayanami-san?" nervously asked the young man.

"...you and the boss have similar tastes in women, it seems," she wryly remarked.

"Huh? What is that supposed to mean?"

"Ask your father about stories of your mother's younger years. I'm sure you'll see what I mean."

"I'm pretty sure I don't..."

"Whatever helps you sleep at night, Ikari-sama." Sighing, Rei adjusted the lapels of her dark jacket, pulling at the buttons on her bright orange shirt. The cleaners keep shrinking my clothes, she couldn't help but muse with irritation. "Ikari-sama, your clothes have always looked rather immaculate; who does your dry cleaning?"

"...no one? I do my own laundry."

Rei glanced over her shoulder, blinking confusedly. "...do you not have servants for that?"

Shinji looked a bit embarrassed. "Well, yeah, but why have them do something I can do for myself?"

"...fair enough." Hmm...perhaps Ikari-sama has enough strength to survive in this world after all. Maybe not as a conventional yakuza...but maybe the world to come would need something unconventional. "Let's go, Ikari-sama; the night is still young, and we still have collections to make."

Thus did the Blue Dragon of Ikari escort the future Ikari Patriarch throughout New Kamurocho...

Well I'm certainly not.

What I am complaining about though is my inability to give a "meow" because I can't decide whether to give a "laugh" because I was just smiling and laughing the whole time or a "hug" because I love it.

I'll just give a hug and an Ichiban fistpump as the closest substitutes I can think of.

I REALLY hope that's not foreshadowing...
Gives me some American McGees Alice vibes, especially with the blood on her fist.
We're all mad here...!

Asuka wobbled her head through some combination of a shrug and a nod. "I guess. It won't be the end of the world if you're there. You and Rei will probably be the first two people to know, whatever we come up with in the end."
Oh no no no no no no no no no no no no no, bad Asuka, the timetable is now more and more irreversibly fucked.
And what Kensuke was telling him did seem suspicious.

Shinji sighed again, but smiled. "Fine, fine, I promise no house cleaning or heavy kitchen work. Now go." He pulled her close and gave her one more kiss before stepping back inside over the threshold to the apartment. "Have a good day at work, honey!" he said in a joking tone.

Asuka's eyes bugged out and her jaw dropped. Shinji matched her a second later as what he'd said caught up to the rest of his brain.
It appears the LCL treatment to his spine is making him grow a second one. Interesting thing to note, given the context of what is about to happen.

"Ok, number one, good on you for answering that way. Two, I love that you did.

Everyone learns eventually :)

She rubbed her face with both hands, covering it like a mask. "And now I don't know anymore what frightens me more; the nightmares about losing him in a fight and going back to being alone… or the idea that he might really love me so much he'd give his life to me. You want to know how he scared me, Misato? Right before we left he said 'Have a good day at work, honey!' Like it was a regular routine, like we were…"

Loving and losing is better than not loving at all, though I get the fear factor. Especially with how foundational they are for each other.
Is this a foreshadowing of sorts I sense, Stryp? If one of them lose their other, the world is probably done for unless Rei can pull them back in.

Kyoko grabbed Sayaka's hand and grinned wildly at her girlfriend's look of curiosity in response. "I wanna tell him about Plan Crazy! Can we?"

I like crazy :V

The dyed-bluenette blushed and looked aside. "Ahh… yesterday we more or less asked Kensuke to… stay with us. Together. For the long run."

And yeah that is kinda crazy considering the society Japan is :V
Good for them though, do what makes them feel happy no matter what!

Shinji's disbelieving stare shifted back to Kensuke. "You're serious? Kensuke, we're fifteen. I think I'm the oldest one in our group, and I'm still a couple months short of sixteen. Proposals? That's…"

Kyoko pried her lips off Sayaka's for one second. "Crazy!" she cried happily. She went back to her task that was no chore at all.

Kids these days, getting into three way engagements before they're old enough to drive. Back in my day it was only two way engagements before being old enough to drive :p

Good to see you back Strypgia :)

Why would that be? Unit 1 doesnt even have an S2 engine this iteration and the real elephants in the room are Kaworu, ReiQ and Gendo with his Adam implantation. Loss of Shinji/Asuka/even both is survivable at the moment, even if absurdly sad.

I have a suspicion that the aversion of disaster and takeover of NERV is not necessarily the end of the troubles. A possible Scenario is that SEELE doesn't move immediately and the situation changes to Misato defacto starting World War 3 after UN gets divided into Team SEELE and Team NERV. Why would SEELE not move immediately? Well, they have likely already figured out that within NERV there is now a completely independent force from Gendo and from them, which the Nephilim are a part of. Sending in MPEs against it immediately could be literal suicide for them - they haven't exactly prepared any measures to prevent Kaworu from simply going "lol thank you for 9 more evangelions". At this point the life of Pilots now turns from "fight a finite number of Angels and yay the troubles are over" to becoming soldiers fighting WW3 and I am not sure the Pilots are going to react well to having to invade Europe and crush clueless armies of human soldiers into the ground, while also hanging the Damocles Sword of Third Impact themselves to make it not possible for anyone to use thermonuclear weapons.

"Thing?" her boyfriend repeated blankly. He snapped his fingers and turned back to Shinji. "Oh! Right! When I went to Sayaka's place yesterday, her dad wasn't home. She said he'd gotten called away on a 'sudden unscheduled drill', which is the exact same thing they said before the first Angel attacked here. And he didn't take some specific military gear he would if it was really a drill. I think something's up, and wanted to pass it to Major Katsuragi. I didn't want to try calling last night, so I figured I'd tell you today."

The distraction did oddly make Shinji feel a bit better. It at least got his mind off the awful memory of Asuka's face flashing shock and fear, or thinking about how much the mere idea of hurting her made his heart clench. And what Kensuke was telling him did seem suspicious. He nodded. "I'll send her a message. She and Kaji-san might know already, but better to tell her anyway," he said, pulling out his phone.

Good boy, Kensuke. Also, this means that the... -checks- 33rd Commandment of Rei is no longer tentative. By telling Shinji, who will tell Misato, a plan will form in the Major's brain.
Also I hope that one day this will be considered good enough to be added to the Chronicles bookmarks or something. Maybe. I don't know. I should be active in the discord. Don't ask me where that thought came from, because sometimes even *I* can't follow that train.

Anyway, The 33rd Commandment of Rei: Kensuke's perverted crimes are forgiven because his obsession with the military probably saved us all.

Welcome to the club, Asuka. We're all mad here...!
Wait, no tea? Did we forget to make a fresh pot? How unusual of us.

Just something the author of Don't Bully Me, Nagatoro wipped up. They made a short asushin comic somewhere, too.
Man, I love 774's work - also, given how extra wholesome (pretty sure his only setting is wholesome) that is, he's unlikely to go for his usual, non-Nagatoro methods.
He's an ero artist, you see. Apparently he once said that his life was saved by drawing Naruto/Hinata hentai.

Is this a foreshadowing of sorts I sense, Stryp? If one of them lose their other, the world is probably done for unless Rei can pull them back in.
One or the other dies, it's 3rd Impact time. That's the only scenario that'll happen.
Fortunately, because this is Stryp's universe, it'll be more than just Shinji and Asuka living outside the tang. Misato, Rei, Kaworu... pretty much that entire classroom. They'll all be there.

Not sure what they'll do... Besides each other.

One or the other dies, it's 3rd Impact time. That's the only scenario that'll happen.
I don't find this reasonable - Shinji does not have the capacity to start Third Impact on his own and in event of EoE tier events would likely not get handed the reigns by Rei the same way, while Unit 02 is basically irrelevant so Asuka can't either. Rei and Kaworu are the ones with the reigns over this situation. As much as such a situation could hurt Rei - I could imagine a Scenario where things get so fucked that everyone she knows dies, including her beloved, and she still does not start Third Impact.

I think a partial solution to that is to trick Seele into thinking Kaworu is dead which would coax them into sending the MP Evas which would then be hijacked by Kaworu.

How many Evas could he control with just his Angelic power, though? One is entirely expected, but what about 9?

And what, exactly, is in the Cores of the MP-Evas that could possibly resist his control? I mean, I can tell you what I think (shattered pieces of another Angel's soul that would be the true final piece of the Adamic puzzle) but it's all speculation and up to Stryp here.

He has a lot more power output and leverage in this situation than he does in the show. Ignoring Rei feeding him back probably both his original body and a good chunk of Lilith to stabilize him and giving him the power to instantly vaporize the MPEs alongside all life on Earth if he so wanted, he has the fact that both Unit 3 and each MPE he would take over gives him extra power output with the S2 engines. The only reason we havent seen him crush his fellow Angels like bugs is that he has avoided using his powers against Arael and Armisael. He is way more stupidly overpowered than he is in canon this time around, he could probably facetank Ramiels proton beam with just Unit 3 alone.
And what, exactly, is in the Cores of the MP-Evas that could possibly resist his control?
Probably absolutely nothing, which is why my guess is that SEELE could decide to just delay the invasion until they redesign the cores to be resistant to that somehow.
