There was no thought to it. Faster than a cobra's strike, her USP was in her hand, the hammer moving back. Kaworu made no move to dodge or even raise his hands.

The gunshot was painfully loud in the small living room.

The room filled with dim orange light. The bullet made a comparatively gentle pok as it was deflected off the two meter wide AT-Field that had appeared in front of Kaworu and up into the ceiling, barely heard over the now much louder hum.

Kaworu still had not moved. The small AT-Field in his hand went out.

Misato kept the gun on him, a snarl twisting her face. She flicked her eyes to her right as she finally noticed the pale while hand and arm coming from the kitchen, outflung towards Kaworu.

Rei Ayanami stepped into the room. She kept her hand stretched out towards the Fifth Child. She looked Misato coldly in the eye. "Are you going to shoot me too?"

There's way too much I've missed while I've been away from SV, but I absolutely called the context for the "shoot me too?" quote and even though I was totally certain, it's still neat to be right :V

You know, given the way that Kaworu's confession probably couldn't have been better-worded to incite Misato's rage if if they tried... maybe they did? Maybe they're deliberately trying to rip this band-aid off early so it doesn't come up later on at a more critical moment?

I really hope this is the case and not just Kaworu being absolutely horrible with words.
Misato would have needed months for something like this to have gone anywhere remotely well. Considering the current timeframe, i.e SEELE is trying to start their endgame and Gendo is about a week from his, they did not have the time for "subtle" or "delicate." The group probably planned around this because while they didn't know the extent Misato's hate, they do know the source via Kaworu and Yui. All thing said, the response went rather well, since it seems she only fired once.

So, we reach a pivotal moment. Either Misato can overcome her justified rage and anger and perhaps at least tolerate knowing the truth of Rei's and Kaworu's origins, or the figurative Fellowship is fractured/broken. Waiting to see what happens will be tough, oof. Nice update!
...I'm not sure that was rage. Or rather, not just rage.
Misato walks in, gets completely blindsided by proof that one of her kids' closest friends is actually an Angel. Which can probably rip the entire building apart with a thought, block all her bullets with a casual laugh.
If she were calmer about the Angels, Kaworu's demeanor here might cause her to pause and reflect. But even without a massive hate-boner for Angels, just seeing that, completely unbraced for it...
Only one chance take the shot fast maybe catch it by surprise BANG.
Reacting the way Misato did doesn't require blind hatred. Just some justifiable paranoia and a sharp poke in the Mama Bear reflexes.
The fact that her hatred probably also caused whatever small section of her mind was working to put together all the pieces to jump to the assumption that Kaworu must have been weasling his way into her kids' confidences just to set them all up, and he's "confessing" to her like this just to gloat... well, that just made her reaction more inevitable.
Also, I know you're still getting used to human interaction, Kaworu, but Jesus Christ, if you're trying to ease someone in to a horrifying revelation, maybe DON'T start with "hey, remember that time we blew up your Dad?"
I've had conversations like this. Well, not this, but... I'm not sure there was a much better way. Trying to take it slow and ease Misato into it... either she's going to get pissed by them beating around the bush when it's late and she's exhausted, or when they're partway there she puts the wrong pieces together and jumps to the worst concluBANG.
Shinji, I know what you're getting at, but don't say those words! That's a Level 5 Cognito-Hazard! You cannot imagine the cruelty of the containment methods to ensure the things do not come from the vents of all things and do unspeakable things to your eye sockets!
Shinji: "Does it affect the safety of the people I care about? B/c otherwise IDGAF."
Yeah. Shinji's getting into that headspace.
Kaworu's AT field was in his hand. It was Rei's AT field that stopped Misato's bullet.
Then again, maybe Kaworu expected Misato to react that way no matter how they told her, and wanted to do it with nobody else in the room to avoid the potential for collateral damage to people without protection-level AT-fields and regenerative capabilities? It does sound like the sort of thing he'd do...
Unless Kaworu was specifically giving Misato the opportunity to kill him and that is REI'S AT Field, even his meager social skills, much less Rei's who should definitely have helped with the confession, point out that this is not the right way to go about revealing your identity.
There's an old Japanese(?) story I recall hearing once. Short version: the Emperor was old and frail, and the strongest of the warlords who served him was starting to consider himself for the Emperor's replacement. Word got around, and one day the Emperor invited the warlord to the Palace. And there, to take a walk in the garden together. Alone. With no guards.

While they walked, the Emperor professed that he was tired, and asked the warlord to carry his sword for him. Which the warlord did. And returned it at the end of their stroll, went back to his own lands, and was the Emperor's most loyal servant until the end of his life.

Now, I doubt Kaworu has heard this tale. But from my seat in the bleachers, he's in a similar headspace to the Emperor. Letting Misato have a free shot at him? Well, worst case, he dies, which would devastate his friends, but at least their safety would be assured. If he doesn't die, maybe his willingness to put his neck under Misato's sword gets through to her.

Trying to stand up to her, OTOH... at best, it leaves them in an unstable armed truce, with Misato just waiting for a chance to stab him in the back (before he does it to her or her kids first), and leaves the other Pilots (and NERV) with their loyalties divided at the worst possible time, when only a fully united front will give them any chance against SEELE.
M: "I only had the one clip..." *frowns, before abruptly throwing the gun at Rei, only for it to bounce off her AT field*

R: "...really?"
"Hey, it worked against Superman!"

It might go better than it seems right now, simply because that gunshot would've woken up both Asuka and Shinji, and Asuka especially isn't gonna fuck around with gunshots near her precious people.
I'd be willing to bet that the next chapter is going to open with Asuka charging into the kitchen as fast as she can with an injured foot, brandishing her crutch like it's some kind of club, while screaming something to the effect of "You picked the wrong house, fool!"

And then she'll realize that it wasn't another assassin, just Misato shooting the resident rainbow trout.

Um. I just realized... this means that Asuka is going to walk in on her mother figure trying to kill one of 'her kids.' @Strypgia, are you trying to play bingo with everyone's past and present traumas?

Stryp: "Yes, yes, now I just need to include Makoto's obscure trauma regarding his dental bills and I'll have my double bingo! Take that Franklin!"
*Irritated Serviceman throws bingo board at Stryp*

Of course that's assuming that Rei didn't angle the field as to deflect the projectile into the ceiling.

Because, you know, since nobody lives there, it would be the savest place to let it hit.
Naturally, only then do we find out that someone just moved back in yesterday when there's a shriek of alarm from upstairs.

"IF I HAVE TO DEAL WITH ONE! MORE! GOTTVERDAMMT..."

Asuka's rage deflated when she saw the scene before her.

She sighed.

"Scheiss, Tabby, how did I tell you that would go?"

"...About like this?"

"Yeah, no kidding. Pay up."

A sheepish Angel pulled a thousand yen note out of his pocket.

"What is the saying... 'Don't spend it all in one place?'" he added, handing it to Asuka.

Asuka huffed. "Small bill like this, it's hard not to."

A groggy Shinji stumbled into the room. "What's going... oh. Right."

"Didn't I tell them this would happen?"

"Yep. Did he pay up?"

Asuka waved the proof in the air.

And an increasingly bewildered Misato Katsuragi gaped in astonishment as the pistol slipped unnoticed from her fingers and fell on the floor.

"...beer?"

A can of Yebisu floated across the room to her, silently, carried on a small orange octagon.

Misato stared at it for a moment before wordlessly popping it open and downing it in one pull.

JimmyWolk I have this fanfic idea that's somewhat base on your Second Try and I would to like to know your thoughts on it.

I had idea for a post 3I fic that would be a fusion fic between Second Try and... Scar Tissue.

The Premise would be after the TI Asuka and Shinji mindsets are the same as their Scar Tissue versions but unlike Scar Tissue and like Second Try no one came back (at least for the first fourteen years to twenty years) and the fic would center around Aki growing up with a mother who's emotionally abusive to her father and Shinji being a broken man but she has no idea that is not normal due to not meeting any other people and when people come out of the Sea of LCL Aki starts to realize this. (also she would have a romance with Kensuke)

Well, I generally don't mind...
Buuut, yeah, kinda echoing @TheDarkFreak here. Could make an interesting story, and I'm usually all for more stories with focus on their kid(s) and in this case the other characters finding themselves suddenly confronted with those (and vice versa), and of course you're free to use the name/likeness...
But I don't know if I'd personally like to imagine "my" Aki in such a drear upringing - if she even could grow up to be a similar character at all then, rather than just mimicking her mother and being hurtful to Shinji because she doesn't know any better. Aki is who she is not the least because of having two (sometimes overly) doting parents showering her with love, after all.
(also she would have a romance with Kensuke)
Aaaand, as her spiritual father, I can't say I really want to think about "my child's" love life. :p I sure hope the intention is that she's already at his age by the time he comes out of the soup...? >_>

Yeah, that was another thing that put me off, too. I wouldn't mind it so much if it was just Shinji's and Asuka's child. Different name, different universe and all that.

I'd want to read it less if it was Aki. Aki is our prickly idiots' hope-child of miracles, and Auntie Rei ain't gonna let shit happen to her, much less Mama Bear and Papa Wolf themselves.

I sure hope the intention is that she's already at his age by the time he comes out of the soup...? >_>

He mentioned a 14-20 year time period before others start showing up, so most likely yes, although that could ironically wind up hitting the "yikes!" point in the other direction, if their kid winds up older.

Shinji paused. "You said you loved me."

Kaworu flinched. It took him a moment to nod.

"Did you mean it?"

Yeah, that's getting right to the point, really. If he wasn't just being manipulative and meant what he said, then Kaworu has learned from being a human and finds meaning in human life. If you assume at least some of the Angels were trying to communicate, then Kaworu is the first one to succeed.

And it doesn't hurt that as he said, Shinji has had disappointingly few people tell him they love him, and he isn't going to want to lose one of them.

"No."

Shinji's firm tone made Asuka look up.

He was staring at his clenched fist in his lap. "Not going to happen. We're not going to let him die, or anyone. I'm not going to let anyone I love die if I can stop it. Not Kaworu, not Rei, and sure as Hell not you. Not as long as I live. We'll beat SEELE, my father, whoever we need to. Nobody dies."

And THERE is the Shinji that makes his Eva go berserk half the time. Asuka's Buddha also kicks butt.

Rei Ayanami stepped into the room. She kept her hand stretched out towards the Fifth Child. She looked Misato coldly in the eye. "Are you going to shoot me too?"

Well, that's pretty much what I expected. You did a fantastic job of setting it up though. When I started the chapter, (and saw that pic) I entertained the notion that the assassin would blab, Misato would be convinced (after being hesitant at first) of her story that Kaworu was the Final Angel, and run to the apartment thinking the kids were in the dark about it. Misato being exhausted and angry, though, and Kaworu being unfortunate enough to be the only one waiting for her when she got home, and in his social ineptitude saying the exact wrong thing works too.

I am concerned Kaworu's death wish is so intense he set that up on purpose, but hopefully now Rei can talk Misato down. Well planned that you cut off Shinji and Asuka from being present, although I do expect them to respond to the gunshot. I can also see an Eighteenth Angel reference coming here, especially since I don't think we're sure how Misato put that together in the canon. (I assume Kaji or Ritsuko told her)

I'll add that with Misato's state of mind and that she has been given no explanation other than "Hi, how you doin', I'm an Angel. Sorry about your dad." Misato is NOT guaranteed to not "shoot Rei too". Which isn't how I took the original line, but promises to be more interesting.

I don't think I would want to read such a story. It did remind me of an idea I have for a fic. The setting would be post Evangelion that takes inspiration from "Nadesico Prince of Darkness."

The idea does have some intrigue to it. Normality is in the eye of the beholder, after all.

It's certainly a depressing idea, and dark fics aren't really my cup of tea, but develop it a bit more (maybe don't use Aki in name, as has been suggested) and I'd say you got a decent fic on your hands.
I'm not sure if it's good or bad I haven't read Scar Tissue yet, and at this point (after a quick glance at tvtropes) I'm not too enthusiastic in reading it.
...of course, if people vote for it when I open polls again :V

From everything i've heard about ST, despite not having read it either, that's... yeah, that's going to be a trauma trip and a half for the Chronicles cast if that gets voted in, isn't it. :p

It's also a heck of a long runner in terms of total chapter/word count, and I think the next Chronicles work should be something shorter (mostly to give @BG_Character_592 and his keyboard a break ;p ).

Of course, in terms of short dark fics, we can grab most anything from Adam Kadmon to meet the criteria. :V

/my vote would be The Second Other
//because that's a level of horror they've yet to encounter
///and squick
////can't forget the squick

If The Second Other is done, then they would need brain bleach, and to give Shinji a lot of hugs along with a bucket.

Oh god NO!!! If we have to do a dark Adam Kadmon fic I Knew Him When would a "better" choice.

Also for a non dark adam kadmon fic (yes those do exist) I would recommend

A world where Kensuke is a pilot... sort of.

Luckily, Rei likely has one on hand for... emergencies.

A little context, though. What does The Second Other entail, story-wise?

Major NSFW spoilers ahead:

It's not found out until near the end, but basically - due to returning from Unit-01's Core after the Zeruel battle - parts of Yui Ikari (in terms of memories, personality, and so on) begin leaking into Shinji Ikari, to the point where even though he's still the same physically, he's becoming more and more like Yui in mind and soul.

Gendo finds this out, and doesn't tell anyone.

He secretly pays shady doctors to begin surgically altering Shinji to become more...feminine.

At the climax of the story, after following the disturbing bread crumbs (but coming to different conclusions than the reality), Misato basically catches Gendo in flagrante delicto with Yui!Shinji. It's not described on-screen as to what's happening, but the implications are quite obvious based on the before and after.

So yeah.

Welll... okay, then. Please tell me that Misato's response to this involves putting a bullet through Gendo's head?

Now, that would be spoiling! It's only a quick 15,000 word read.

Take a stab at it, if you'd like. :V
