Armisael attacks while Rei and Kaworu are in Unit-00, they turn into that merged kaworu-rei thing from EOE and then trigger the self-destruct, possibly after leaping way into the air so they don't nuke the city completely.

Rei survives because Gendo had an extra backup body hidden under all the bad porn on his desk.

Asuka and Shinji just cry a lot.

That desk IS big enough to hid a body in... and worse comes to worst, they have the data from her most recent scan, and the technical know-how to make a new body... Assuming a new one doesn't just drop off of Lilith like a very fleshy fruit.

Just cross-synch, ie, Shinji in Unit-02 instead of Unit-01, etc. Not 'Let's see how many Pilots we can squeeze into one Entry Plug before someone notices we're just fucking around'. :p

I wanted that too, but the scene was already getting crowded with just six people and gifts, so I gave them excuses to be elsewhere. I do want to give some more time to them all, but that might be pushed to side-stories to avoid making the core chapters any larger than they're already going to be.

Given the symmetry involved, it seems unlikely to me that Chapter 10 won't feature the 16th Angel and Chapter 11 won't feature the 17th Angel. And we already know that everything that hasn't gone to Hell will do so in Chapter 12. But the idea that Chapter 11 is going to be very, very, very short is now in my head.

I was thinking more of a parallel with how Rei I was strangled by Naoko Akagi, rather than to Shinji and Asuka in EOE.

On a semi-related side note... do we know why it was that Rei didn't like the color red in canon? Was it strictly a product of her animosity with Asuka, or was there more to it? Because I can't help but recall Rei I was wearing a red dress when Naoko killed her...

I don't think they really get into the root of it, but her antagonism with Asuka definitely fueled it. I think it tied into her dislike of blood, which might also have something to do with her dislike of meat. (She mentions the blood during her weird monologue during the clip show.)

Something about it just makes me think Rei on the Israefel Special route instead of the Rainbow Trout route. The thing is, it's pretty much a song about someone who's dependable first and foremost, and does all they can as a protective agent second. That's definitely more Rei than Asuka or Shinji- she's the rock, here, and the hammer of light too. If for no other reason than GNR potential.

Have something better for Asuka and Shinji.




(Yes, Shinji gets the song about a demon in Latin, and Asuka gets the cooing baritone talking about music and love. It works out that way, apparently.)

I find it hilarious that Rei is making the Crazy Rei eyes in that picture.

Asuka had a small smile on her face. "Also, he knows even you're not so crazy as to guzzle fancy liquor like that down too quickly. You'll sip it and savor it slowly, thereby reducing your drinking a bit. Like I said, 'smart and listens'."

Misato shot Shinji an amused look. He ducked his head, slightly guiltily. "You do drink a lot, Misato-san. It worries me sometimes."

"I've been cutting back!" she protested. "I've been... otherwise distracted lately." She clinked her glass of wine against Kaji's. "We'll make it last, Shinji. Thank you."

Amusing, and a nice counterpoint to Misato quitting drinking in the canon after Kaji died. Different reason, but growth in both cases.


"Not the SDAT. I made the tape in it for you. Shinji told me about 'mix tapes'. So I assembled a tape of songs for you. To... say things I can't."

Misato and Asuka exchanged a look full of raised eyebrows, then switched back to Rei.

Yeah, that was about as subtle as a train wreck.

"I gave him his gift last night, at the end of the party," Rei said calmly. "It was likewise a rather personal one."

Rei calmly took another cookie and nibbled at it, ignoring all the stares.

Rei rose smoothly, taking another cookie as she did. "I will be pleased to help with the set-up, Asuka. Come, Kaworu. To the bedroom."

I imagined a slightly different method. She sets off the self-destruct like in canon, but while Unit-00's AT Field is inverted to keep Armisael inside, Rei's own AT Field is in standard configuration to protect herself from the blast. When the retrieval team finds what's left of the Entry Plug, a rather battered Rei crawls out of the wreckage, bleeding a bit, her plug suit mostly shredded, but she's alive and all her parts are still attached. There's some debate about what she said before passing out. It was either "Remind me never to do that again." or "I believe that I have expended my ration of good luck for the year."
