I can almost imagine the start of the grilling form the old men: "You dismissed your 2 best pilots BEFORE you tested the Dummy Plugs in actual combat and the result was a complete and unmitigated disaster! If the 2 dismissed pilots hadn't come in on their own initiative with the help of Inspector Kaji and taken the massive risk of activating an Evangelion that could have still been contaminated by the 13th Angel, an Evangelion that neither had ever so much as TOUCHED before that day, we'd all be dead!"

Considering the affair with Iruel showed Gendo trying to conceal what actually happened from SEELE, you think he's going to admit that? He was unsuccessful, but the fact that he tried says he thought it could work. He's going to spin the battle in a way that makes NERV and him look best.

Except that instead of doing damage control and laying false data trails in support of a cover story, Gendo has been doing nothing but stare at Unit-01 since the battle ended and the recovery operation began. Plus, he knows that Kaji is a mole for SEELE(among other entities. I believe Gendo is also aware that Kaji is also a triple-agent for the Japanese Government) so if Kaji's already filed a report, he's gonna have a lot of fast talking to do if he tries to sell a different version of events.

Iruel was also much more subtle in it's attack, it also wasn't accompanied by rather long period where pilots weren't part of NERV after rather public (for internal business) show of "insubordination" and Gendo's lack of tactical skill.

That just helps highlight how messed up Gendo is. He should be doing that, but instead he's doing this.

Although there is the idea that supposedly(?) Gendo knew when the attack was going to come (Dead Sea Scrolls supposedly predicted every attack) and has played his game accordingly. Doing it thirty seconds ago means you have the right to sit back and look the part of the magnificent bastard.

Except that with his hours-long vigil he most certainly ruined his chances at anything other than the truth.

Excellent scene, btw.

Interestingly enough Gendo also just lost serious amount of loyalty, good will and reputation within NERV (at least Tokyo-3 branch).
Bad tactical and strategic decisions, serious punishment for succeeding despite questionable orders, he put everyone at risk of apocalypse because he couldn't accept anything but blind obedience or in short because of his ego. He's spending influence in home fast, possibly too fast and at same time Misato and pilots' position solidify.

Lengthy? This is only about 4 days after Bardiel. They spent most of that time in the cells. They've only been 'dismissed' for about 36 hours tops.

Vis a vis Kaji, Gendo never gives any sign he knows he's also working for the Japanese Ministry of the Interior, so Gendo either doesn't know or doesn't care. Could go either way, but I'd bet more on the latter, and Gendo being confident that SEELE's other agents in the Japanese Government can stop anything serious Kaji tries to start.

Gendo is a sad, broken, pathetic excuse for a human being, just like Shinji. :p

Not that it excuses his being a tremendous asshole, but the parallels between his relationship/obsession with Yui and his son's with Asuka are very poignant.
Meh. Aside from purely despair-driven actions in the heat of the moment of Asuka's potential death, Shinji is so fundamentally different from his father that the parallels would quickly fall flat.

Quite literally the only people Gendo cares about after Yui's death are Fuyutsuki and Rei. And considering how he treats Rei, that's not saying much. Even before Yui's death, the list only included (besides Yui) Fuyutsuki and maybe Shinji.
And he deliberately sought out SEELE and took part in their plot to end the human race (including Second Impact) before he met Yui.

Shinji is the kind of guy who, even after losing the light of his life, would still care about quite a few people and actually show some affection towards them on a regular basis. He'd still find the idea of sacrificing lots of innocent people just for the chance to have Asuka back abhorrent, and he'd never be a control-freak asshole of a human being without having an extremely good justification for it to suit the specific situation. He would rather his Pilots and allies be as strong as possible than obedient or controlled, and he would probably put all of his actions under the scrutiny of "would Asuka approve of this?" as a criteria.

Well, lets see what Gendo (Strypgia) comes up with.
Mushrooms. Mushrooms everywhere.

Until I'm done? I may drop out to go run errands but this show is live until I post that update.

Welcome to the party, Ranma-sensei. This gent writes 'Coupled Effort', a nice Peggy Sue Looped Eva fic for our favorite pair. And something you all might regret? Bah, this will be awesome!
Okay, Strip: I checked his profile for all of his created threads and found nothing about 'Coupled Effort'. Is it on FF.net or something? If so, then why did he say that his PR/KC fic was his first fic ever, which was started less than two months ago? Could you provide a link to the fic you're referring to, at least? I'm curious about it.

I know this opinion is widely popular in fanon, but having only days ago checked Gendo's profile on the official sites, I never found any indication of that. Is there a canon source that I missed?

What are you getting at? My first fic ever was in 2004, and it was in the Ranma-verse...

Chapter 8.3
Ok, this scene has been holding me up for too long, because eck, I had to get into Gendo's head, and it just wasn't a fun one. But I got myself moving this Sunday, and got this done for you all. Thanks for being patient.

Chapter 8.3
Advent
+++++++++

"Ikari, the MAGI report extensive damage to the surface defenses and that the Angel was able to penetrate the Geofront before it was stopped. Explain how this was allowed to happen," boomed the voice of SEELE-02.

Gendo did not let his annoyance show on his face. He simply stared levelly over his hands at the blank holographic monolith with SOUND ONLY printed on it.

"The Angel, designated Zeruel, proved to be extremely swift and powerful. It appeared on our sensors close in and approached Tokyo-3 too quickly to deploy the Evangelions further out. They engaged the Angel in the city itself. Units 00 and 02 deployed under Dummy Plug control. The Angel disabled them in short order. Pilot Ayanami in Unit-01 damaged the Angel, but it drove her through one of the Geofront Access points. At that point damage to Unit-01 from the fall made it necessary to activate Unit-03 as an emergency measure to continue the battle. Unit-01 and -03 then destroyed the Angel," Gendo said calmly.

"We ordered Unit-03 frozen due to suspected Angelic contamination! The Fourth Child was missing and there was no Dummy Plug readied for it! How did you activate it?" SEELE-05 questioned angrily.

Gendo had to fight to keep his jaw from tightening. This would not be easy to dress up. "The Second and Third Children sortied in Unit-03. "

"The Second and Third Children were dismissed from Piloting. You assured us the Dummy Plugs made their services unnecessary in light of their insubordination and inability to follow orders. Explain," demanded SEELE-08.

"Unit-01 was effectively crippled from damage at that point. The Second and Third Children were temporarily reactivated as Pilots."

SEELE-07 sounded incredulous. "That worked? They managed to activate Unit-3 without a related soul in the Core?"

"Yes," Gendo grated. The fight for internal control was still occupying most of his willpower.

"How? How did the Pilots maintain a link with an unfamiliar soul without specialized training?"

"They achieved dual-Synch. Their combined Synchronization Rate was sufficient to deploy Unit-03 and engage the Angel. Their acquaintance with the Fourth Child was enough under those conditions to maintain a minimum Synch with the Evangelion. Additionally, the Fourth Child...was recovered from the Core of Unit-03 at the conclusion of the battle. I have ordered her secured under observation in the Geofront hospital until further notice. The extraction of the Fourth Child makes it unlikely the Second and Third Children can Pilot Unit-03 any longer."

He bit down on any expression or feeling escaping his control. He could not let anything show. Not now, not to these men. But it was hard, so hard...

'She came out. She CAME OUT. It is possible! How? How did the Third Child do it? Yui...'

He forced the thought down. Not now, not now.

He'd been silent too long. The old men took that as the end of his answer.

"How did you recover the Fourth Child from Unit-03's Core? That has never been done!" said SEELE-03.

"Unknown." Gendo said with as little tone as possible. "She reconstituted in the Entry Plug at the end of the combat alert." 'I wish I knew. It can be done! Yui! I will get you out of there! Wait for me!'

"If it was not by NERV's action, the possibility of Angelic contamination of the Fourth Child is too high for safety. She is to be removed from Piloting an Evangelion until examination proves she is clear," rumbled the unmistakable, dusty voice of Lorenz Kihl from the SEELE-01 monolith. "Your estimates of the performance of the Dummy Plug System were obviously too high, Ikari. The Second and Third Children are to be commended for their efforts and permanently reactivated."

"The Second and Third are poorly suited to following orders. The Dummy Plugs are far more reliable," Gendo protested coolly.

SEELE-01 was implacable. "Yet they failed in combat against the Angel, and you were saved only by the Children. The Dummy Plugs are not sufficient. You are not to field them while you have Children available with superior performance. If the Second and Third Children are not adequately responding to orders, find ways to convince them it is in their best interest to do so."

"So who will Pilot Unit-03, if the Fourth Child is a contamination risk?"

"We will send you the Fifth Child," SEELE-01 said.

'Fifth Child? So soon after we 'found' the Fourth? Kihl has to know I will regard anyone they send as a spy. And he knows I know that.'

Gendo let no outward sign of displeasure show. "Very well. We will prepare Unit-03's Core for Synchronization with a new Pilot." He paused. "And how will the Fifth Child Synchronize with Unit-03?" he asked, perfectly cool.

"The Fifth Child is trained for Synchronization with unfamiliar Cores," SEELE-01 said, just as cool. "You will use him." It was an order.

"Understood."

The monoliths faded away. The lights in the room brightened just enough to show Sub-Commander Fuyutsuki standing a few meters behind Gendo.

"The Fifth Child," the old professor said. "Well before we expected."

"SEELE is playing their card early. Alert Section 2 to prepare for increased surveillance on the Fifth as soon as they arrive. They will not be just a Pliot, I am certain," Gendo ordered as he brushed past the older man on his way out the door.

"I am going to question the Fourth Child. She must know something."

The door slid shut behind him, leaving Fuyutsuki in the dim room alone. He sadly shook his head. "Ikari... eleven years and you still can't accept that maybe this is what Yui chose?"

"Your estimates of the performance of the Dummy Plug System were obviously too high, Ikari. The Second and Third Children are to be commended for their efforts and permanently reactivated."

Oh man. Kihl sure put Gendo in his place. Nicely done.
If the Second and Third Children are not adequately responding to orders, find ways to convince them it is in their best interest to do so."
Hoo boy. Not-fun times coming up for Shinji and Asuka. :(

Not if Shinsuka (okay, that was bad ) have learned something from that mess and start getting sneaky in their insubordination. Remember, mercenary rule number 2 will likely get Seele to overrule Gendoh.

Speaking of the rules, Gendoh's main flaw is that he didn't consider number 17's implications.

Good snip, Stryp. The bastard king is pretty believable.

Dunno guys. Gendo can be a vindictive bastard when he wants to be. And I'm betting he's practically oozing vindictiveness right about now. The only thing that's offsetting it is the renewed hope of getting Yui out of Unit 01.

Also, the SEELE Council only said Shinji and Asuka were to be reinstated as pilots permanently.

Kiehl never said anything about whether they had to be happy or not.

And Kiehl even said as much to Gendo - that he needs to come up with better ways of disciplining the pilots.

Methinks a nasty bit of 'discipline' is coming down the pipes.

Consider that both of them will soon be talking to souls in evas (as much as possible) and we know they can stop incoming signals. To make it short, you don't want person who is ready to kill you in eva, especially when you can't be sure you can stop them.
Next thing to consider is that all it takes to bring Seele on Gendo is for Kaji to veal what irders were given abd their circumstances. Seele want Angels dead because they can't proceed without them gone so they wont like actions that put success in danger.
