*Gendo can be a vindictive bastard*
Yeah, problem is that Asuka just realized she doesn't need piloting anymore (I know, not quite accurate, but work with me, here), but Seele needs both her and Shinji.

What do you think happens if they threaten to both not pilot anymore? Or better yet, all three of the pilots?

Frankly what Gendo is going to do next I think is mostly irrelevant next to the revelation that everyone's (except Asuka) favorite albino bishie is coming to town two angels early.

Kaworu always gave me the creeps, and not because he's gay. There's just something... Off about him in general, He's earnest in a way that people simply aren't normally like.

Consider that both of them will soon be talking to souls in evas (as much as possible) and we know they can stop incoming signals. To make it short, you don't want person who is ready to kill you in eva, especially when you can't be sure you can stop them.
Next thing to consider is that all it takes to bring Seele on Gendo is for Kaji to veal what irders were given abd their circumstances. Seele want Anfels dead because they can't proceed without them gone so they wont like actions that put success in danger.

Really? One typo make for such reaction?

Besides being inhuman monster that wear skin of human teenager? He makes much more sense when you remember that he only look human.
Nothing against the guy, just keep that in mind.

1. Gendo won't be happy, not at all.
2. Depend on when his oldest backup of Rei's memory was made.
3. Consider more dangerous situation where they do pilot, all Gendo have for control are forcible cutting of synchronization, ejecting plug or pressure trick while activation of dummy plug will need very good explanation to committee and may not work once pilots connect with evas. All of those need cooperation of bridge crew, now when his authority is at all time lowest with pilots gaining TONS of good will for fourteen. Any stunt like trying to blackmail Children will eat into good will he have left with NERV personnel something fierce if it gets out and it will.

Does the clone system even allow for multiple backups?
Never mentioned in-series, therefore to be used at the author's discretion. Even then, though, I'd suspect that those backups don't go back far enough - and Rei'd be pissed to have to go cold-turkey again.

Yeah, and Gendoh's plans pretty much run down the drain earlier than expected.

Yeah, he gave me the creeps too for pretty much the same reason. And I'm pretty sure that was intentional on Gainax's part, probably as a way of showing how gone Shinji was. I mean, the rest of the cast (and the spectator) could tell that there was something really wrong with the guy, and yet Shinji blindly trusted him because of all of his issues.

Nice snippet Stryp! :)

If it were one typo, it'd hardly be anything worth noting, no matter what the typo was. The only reason I was so perplexed and amused by it was because it was several times, almost in a row. It was more bizarre than anything, really.

And therein lies the practical aspect of the point.

Does the clone system even allow for multiple backups?
If it did, wouldn't Gendo just be able to have a bunch of active Rei's all the time? And if we was, why did he never do this, even for battles?

'She came out. She CAME OUT. It is possible! How? How did the Third Child do it? Yui...'
'How?!...'

'Wait... Dual synchronization. Could it be?'

*Hours later*

Shinji: Could someone tell me again why we're doing synch tests with all three of us inside Unit-01?
Ritsuko: If you think that's uncomfortable, wait till the fifth child arrives.

"We will send you the Fifth Child," SEELE-01 said.
Kaoru's not just two angels too early, he's also *months* ahead of schedule. The increased exposure to the other pilots, and seeing how close all four of them are, should make things really interesting.

"Oh sure, I'm creepy. But a blue haired waif with no shame or emotions whose only desire is to die for Commander bastard, that's A-Ok."

That would make it a little difficult to keep the fact she's an expendable clone from becoming common knowledge. I can't imagine that looking good in the newspapers, no matter how much leverage NERV has with the Japanese government.

Enough complaining about typos in posts, please.

I have a story outline, really I do. And I keep getting pulled waaaay off it. Chapter 8 was originally supposed to start with Misato figuring things out. Now, I've got two more scenes before I can even get to the comedy bits that were supposed to be the entirety of the chapter. And they are the kind of scene that are tough and slow to write. I think I've got the momentum to make sure it doesn't take as long as the last gap between updates, though.

I can neither confirm nor deny Kaworu will be played by Robert Pattinson in this fic.

More seriously, Kaworu is supposed to be unsettling: he's literally inhuman, just pretending and trying to be one. And at the point he shows up, Shinji's falling apart. All the people in his life he might turn to are as bad off as he is or mired in their own problems: Askua's catatonic, Rei is frightening and uncanny as she adapts to her third clone body, and Misato is being consumed by her grief over losing Kaji.

Then this weird Fifth Child appears, and offers Shinji no-questions-asked affection. And Shinji is desperate enough for any positive emotional attention he goes for it... and feels all the worse when he realizes Kaworu was lying to him and was going to betray him.

Being Shinji is suffering.

Needless to say, things are going to go differently here...

Writing takes time, especially when your backlog runs dry.

We can wait.:)

Well, if it makes our bishie Angel feel better, I also thought Rei was creepy as fuck the first time I watched the series all those years ago. But she's grown on me over the years. :D

Still nowhere near close to Asuka, though.

Kiehl never said anything about whether they had to be happy or not.

And Kiehl even said as much to Gendo - that he needs to come up with better ways of disciplining the pilots.
Kiehl didn't say "discipline." He indicated that Gendo needs better ways to motivate them.

Kiehl is a successful businessman. He has to know that positive motivation more effectively engenders loyalty and trust--or at least obedience--than punishment. I recall from somewhere that one needs three positives to balance one negative.

OK, loyalty and trust are out of the question for Gendastard. :anger:

Whether Gendo can come up with positive ways to motivate them is the big question. Naw, there's no question about it: He needs to get some good advice. I can think of two very manipulative tricks that Gendo could try. One is letting the kids find out that he was over-ruled by the Chairman (Asuka should know of Kiehl as chair of the oversight committee); this will make Gendo look less formidable and let S&A feel that they have an important supporter. Have to be subtle with this, make them think that he doesn't want anyone to know about it. Also, don't refer to the whole incident again, suggesting that he is embarassed about the whole affair. :(, but actually . Let someone else (Fuyutsuki, perhaps) deal with the kids.

Asuka only knows very vaguely of Kihl in his persona as Chairman of the Human Instrumentality Committee of the UN. About as much as she's aware that Commander Ikari has bosses above him in the UN, but who they are has never really mattered to her. She knows who the Commander of NERV Berlin and NERV Hamburg are, but that's about as far as her knowledge of the chain of command goes.

Having Fuyutsuki deal with them in the future is more likely to work. Gendo showing weakness is anathema to him.

Snrk!

.... Yeah, this shit's gonna go off the rails so quickly that it's gonna be funny. And if Rei is totally geeking out over the pretty fireworks Asuka and Shinji's souls are making together, I can only imagine how Kaworu will react.

Well with section 2 busy with Bishie-boy Asuka and Shinji won't have to worry about surveillance.

as much

Asuka: Just. As. Planned.
Shinji: This was not your plan.
Asuka: Quiet you.
